Ocean Kayaking

It was a unique experience to finally kayak on the open ocean and get to see several fish while snorkeling. The water was clear and the weather was nice. Make sure you get a good waterproof camera. My camera was destroyed. I didn't want to settle on those disposable cameras and wanted digital. However, I was on a short budget and got a cheap one. I found out later, someone else in my group regretfully did the same thing. Other than that, the experience was worth it. Another note: We were the first ones there and got plenty of water time.

Great experience with a top notch guide!

We had a great time on our kayak/snorkeling trip. Kira was very helpful with my wife (novice kayaker), and she did a great job of educating about the marine life and area. We saw numerous spinner dolphins in the bay, and the snorkeling was awesome! Super clear conditions, tons of fish - even got to follow an octopus around. A bit pricey, but considering the cost of just renting a kayak and the hassle of getting a landing permit, money well spent.

We had a great time with these guys. The guides knew a lot and were super friendly. If you're looking to go kayaking, this is the group to go with.

This was a great outing to do. Getting there early in the morning allowed our (small) group to snorkel the bay before the masses got there. It was an easy kayak out, but still a bit of exercise. The guide was quite friendly and knowledgeable. On our way back, we paddled by some dolphins. As we were required, we stayed 50 yards away and stopped the boats to watch... and the dolphins (about 5 of them) chose to swim right up to us and give us a little show. Quite amazing... highly recommend this tour.

Had a great kayak & snorkel experience!

I took the Kayak and Snorkel tour with my wife and parents on Jan 1st 2012. The entire staff was extremely courteous and professional, and I was particularly impressed with Roy and Joy. They went the extra mile to make my wife and dad comfortable in the water. My wife is not much of a swimmer and is not comfortable in the ocean either, but Joy gave her the confidence and training...and had her swim over 200 ft to the other side!! This was definitely one of our best experiences on Big Island and I highly recommend it.

I booked this because I didn't want to take my chances kayaking and snorkeling when I didn't know where I was going or what to do. It was fun - not too big of a group and at least we weren't on our own. We did figure out later that you can snorkel from the little beach in front of the King Kam. Not quite as good as Captain Cook, but a lot cheaper (5$ to rent snorkel gear from the Kona Boys shack). My husband said if he had known that he wouldn't have done the tour. It think I still would have, but it's good to know that there are easy places to snorkel if you want to go on your own!

This is by far the best snorkeling we did while on the Big Island! The kayaking was enjoyable and not too strenuous. The snacks were great too!

Guides were enthusiastic and fun. Had a very nice time. Didn't get to see any dolphins which was unfortunate. Good with our kids. Overall would recommend.

Excellent value, a highlight of our trip

This is a fun and satisfying activity, and these folks run an excellent no-frills operation. I wasn't enthusiastic about having a 7:00am start time, but it proved to be a worthwhile way to start the day. The paddling distance to the Cook monument was just about perfect, and landing at the monument was a privilege (many people snorkel off the boats or don't know the best place to beach their kayaks). A surprise to me was that you get to walk through the remnants of a historically important Hawaiian village, and the views of the high cliffs along the bay are stunning. The snorkelling is first-class, and when the bay got busy with numerous motorized tour-boats, I appreciated that we had had the earlier start. With all the people who came by tour boat, I felt like our tour via kayak was much more special. Adventures in Paradise puts together a very nice assortment of snacks; there was plenty to go around. Our amiable guide was knowledgeable about the area and its history, and we even met up with him a few days later for a tour of his coffee farm. We don't do a lot of tours because we usually prefer self-guiding, but this was excellent value.

Amazing day on our honeymoon!

My husband and I took a delayed honeymoon to Hawaii, and took this kayak/snorkel tour on one of the last days we were there. It was amazing! We didn't know what to expect, and got lost on the way- but they took excellent care of us and made us comfortable from the start. Our guide was fantastic- and she taught us the right and wrong ways to kayak safely (and legally) along the reefs. (A lot of people rent kayaks from locals who say it's ok to do things like grab the dolphins and stand on the coral, so I was glad we took a tour with someone who cares about the islands.) There were dolphins everywhere along the route to the reef! When we got there, they provided snacks and equipment for us, which was great- because my husband and I weren't completely prepared... The other couples on our tour were great, too. We all had so much fun, and were sad to call it a day.

Fresh muffins on arrival, large selection of kit, so getting right size not a problem. Guide (Kira) was a marine biologist with a friendly personality well suited to running this type of activity. Respect for the reef was shown, so no damage was done by tramping on the coral, plus Kira's knowledge on thinks aquatic was second to none. Home made snacks available were lovely and enthusiasticly devoured by the entire group.

Nothing but good things to say about AIP. Keira, Karen and the rest of the crew were wonderful. I don't have much experience with other kayak/snorkel outfitters on the Big Island but Keira was a great guide. Very knowledgable and someone who really likes what she does and it shows. Five stars!
