FAQs

Do I have to purchase tickets in advance? Can I pay cash?
Tickets must be purchased in advance. This is because tickets are limited and our tours typically sell out quickly. For a better chance of getting the day, time, and number of tickets you prefer, please book well in advance. Tickets can be purchased with a Visa, AMEX, or MasterCard either online or by phone. Cash is not accepted.
If a food tour is sold out, is there a waiting list?
Unfortunately, we do not have a waiting list. If the time slot you'd like is sold out, we suggest you check another date/time for availability!
How much food will we eat on the tour?
The seven tastings on our tour are enough for a meal. We do encourage a light breakfast before the tour, as the tour is not intended to replace both breakfast and lunch. Most participants leave our tours feeling comfortably full.
How much walking is involved?
On our Chinatown and Little Italy Food Fest tour, we walk no more than ˝ of a mile and walk at a moderate pace. During the 3-hour tour, there are many standing breaks, so we aren’t always walking. There is also one 30-minute sit-down dining experience.
Does the tour end at the same place it begins?
The tour ends about ˝ a block away from the starting location. After the tour ends, you can easily retrace your steps and revisit places we experienced. You will be given an information sheet that will also help guide you along.
What type of food will we taste on the tour?
We taste foods from the oldest Italian cheese shop in America, an Italian specialty shop, an Italian pastry shop, a pizzeria, an authentic Chinese dumpling shop, a Thai specialty restaurant, and the oldest tea parlor in Chinatown. Food-tasting locations can change without notice.
Are any beverages served on the tour?
During the sit-down portion of the tour, we will provide you with water. We recommend bringing a bottle of water/beverage to compliment the other tastings along our tour. Water/beverages may also be purchased at the starting location before we begin the tour.
Is the tour all about food?
Not a chance. Our goal is that you not only taste delicious food, but become immersed in the history and culture of the neighborhoods visited.
Do you accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies?
We do our best to accommodate any dietary restrictions or food allergies (i.e. diabetic, vegetarian, gluten). Please alert us upon booking your tour. And feel free to contact us before booking by clicking on "Contact AhoyNYTours" if you have further questions.
I live in NYC, will this tour have anything to offer me?
Yes! Many of our tour-goers are from the NYC area and we constantly hear that the Ahoy New York Tours & Tasting experience puts the whole city in a new light. We’ve seen many natives learn more about their own backyard and with many of them being so close; it gives them opportunities to tour with us over and over and bring their friends and family.
What is the best time during my stay to take the tour?
We recommend taking our tour early in your NYC agenda. We believe our tours enhance your NYC visit. Throughout our tours, we recommend more dining experiences and off-the-beaten path locations for you to try once the tour concludes.
Will there be restroom stops on the tour?
Yes, at our sit-down tasting (about half way through the tour) there will be a restroom available. We do suggest that tour-goers plan to use the restroom before the start of the tour. Upon receiving your tour confirmation email, you will be provided with a restroom location to use prior to the tour.
What if it rains? Will the tour still take place?
The tours are held in rain, snow or shine. We ask that you make sure to check the weather on the day of your tour and dress appropriately (bring an umbrella if necessary). On days of inclement weather, we will do our best to utilize indoor space as much as possible.
How should I dress for the tour?
We will be on our feet and outdoors for most of the tour, so please wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes. Please dress appropriately for the day's weather including bringing an umbrella on rainy days, wearing warm layers on cold days, and cool clothing on hot days.
Can I bring my children on the tour?
While we offer reduced tickets for children, our tours are mainly for a mature audience in that we taste ethnic cuisine and dive deeply into history and culture. Sometimes we find that children of a young age may become easily disengaged. Although we are a family-friendly tour company, please take care in knowing if your child will enjoy the experience prior to booking. We find that children 8 years old and older enjoy our tours more than those of younger ages. If you have questions about bringing young children, please feel free to contact us at "Contact AhoyNYTours" prior to purchasing your tickets.
Is there parking available nearby?
Parking can be difficult in New York City and therefore we encourage people to use mass transportation. If you are driving, we suggest parking in one of the nearby parking garages. Specific parking information will be provided after purchasing your tickets in your tour confirmation email.
Does the tour guide accept gratuities?
Gratuities are graciously appreciated, though not mandatory. The standard gratuity in the service industry is 15%.
Is shopping allowed during a tour?
We ask that you please wait to shop until the end of the tour so that we can stay on our food tasting schedule, and keep the tour running in a timely manner. The tour is designed so you may easily visit any of the locations once the tour concludes. You will be provided with an information sheet which lists all the locations and addresses along with a map.
Can I bring my dog with me on the tour?
Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on this tour. During the tour we will enter several food establishments where dogs are not permitted because of Health Department regulations.
Is the tour wheelchair and baby stroller accessible?
Although we would like to try to cater to your wheelchair and stroller needs, it takes time for us to coordinate due to the geographic limitations of the area. With notice, sometimes we can accommodate your needs. Please contact us by clicking on the "Contact AhoyNYTours" link for more information.
Are the tours offered in any other language besides English?
While the majority of our tours are conducted in English, we do have a French speaking guide available to conduct tours in French. Please contact us by clicking on "Contact AhoyNYTours" if interested.
Can I purchase a gift certificate?
Yes, gift certificates are available. To learn more about purchasing a gift certificate please contact us by clicking on "Contact AhoyNYTours."
Are private tours available?
Yes, private tours are available. To learn more about private tours please contact us by clicking on "Contact AhoyNYTours."

About

Ahoy New York Tours & Tasting

Ahoy New York Tours & Tasting Food Tours offers unique food tasting and cultural walking tours in NYC’s historic, cultural, and ethnic neighborhoods. Your guide’s knowledge, wit, and cheerful disposition will make you feel at ease and ready to continue exploring these neighborhoods after your tour experience.

Our tours have been featured in CBS New York, Tripadvisor, The New York Times and The New York Daily News.

Our Big Apple adventures began six years ago when our founder, Alana Hoye, first began exploring these NYC neighborhoods. Her time discovering hidden gems, tasting ethnic cuisine, and becoming a part of the culture led to the journeys enjoyed by tour-goers today.

Touring with us makes you feel part of a special family. This is because we conduct tours in small groups that allow participants the chance to get to know each other throughout the process. We strongly recommend taking our tour at the beginning of your NYC stay so you can return to these amazing neighborhoods and continue the adventure before you head home.

"This tour was marvelous! It is a wonderful reminder of all the hidden gems we have in NYC, I've lived in NYC all my life but there is still so much more to learn about the big city. Our guide was very knowledgeable about Little Italy and Chinatown. She gave us the history on historical sites in the community as well as how the food related to the culture. My finicky 13 year old enjoyed it!! I highly recommend this tour--the food was divine, and Ahoy NY provides great suggestions for some wonderful eateries."
