Relaxing and Informative

This sternwheeler steamboat cruise takes you into the back country of Tonto National Forest. Captain Tom makes plenty of stops, and explains geological, biological, historical and amusing features of Canyon Lake. For instance, along the way, we saw Bach and his organ, bat caves, a mammoth and two native women guarding Canyon Lake. Captain Tom had a story for them all. (In fact, thanks to this great cruise, we found ourselves seeing characters and shapes in other landforms we encountered while touring Arizona.) The tour was also interactive and informative; Captain Tom had us ask Bach to play his organ, and asked us questions about what we might be seeing. He took genuine interest in his passengers and related personal stories with us where conversation allowed. Perhaps my favorite feature of Canyon Lake was the wall of geodes and petrified trees, seen end-on, near the turn-around point of the cruise. We took the tour in November on a calm day. The boat was clean and, on our cruise, comfortably uncrowded. Compared to other attractions we visited, the cruise was relaxing. We had a fun time and took the opportunity of sitting-while-touring to really see the sights and learn the stories. We took plenty of photos which will complement the memories we made.

Canyon Lake Tour

My wife and I where in the Phoenix area primarily for golf but took one day to drive up the canyon. The ride on the Dolly filled a couple of hours just fine, a nice change of pace. The crew were friendly and offered some good background information. Definately recommended.

Nice Cruise...Great Customer Service

The cruise around the lake was beautiful and the crew was great. We made reservations online and when we arrived at the lake, we discovered we had accidentally been booked for a chartered cruise of about 50 2nd graders! The Dolly Steamboat crew and staff were great offering us seats on a later cruise and even provided us free passes for the mix up. We decided to say on our original cruise and the tour was beautiful. The weather was great, the narration provide enough information to spark interest about the history and local stories about the lake and surrounding rock formations. I would certainly recommend this cruise to anyone.

Wonderful afternoon cruise on the Dolly. Saw some beautiful canyon scenery along with some mountain sheep. The scenic drive to the boat was worth it in and of itself, recommend going early enough to enjoy the scenery of the Apache Trail, it's gorgeous.

Sat on the top level and saw beautiful scenery. Majestic cliffs of varied colors. The big horn sheep stopped to take a look at us; we stared back in amazement. Snacks and drinks were available on board. A wonderful 90 minutes, the highlight of our weekend.

The boat is very clean, and the Captain (Jeff) is enthusiastic, interesting and knowledgeable. All guests are greeted as they board, children are given appropriate-sized life vests, and the fun begins almost immediately! It's a lovely way to spend a couple of hours.

Wife, self, daughter and son-in-law very much enjoyed the cruise. Crew friendly and seating comfortable. Captain could (should?) have been a bit more knowledgeable about geology. Aquaintance with deep lake hydrology may increase his knowledge base. We all would have like to see wildlife, but noon sailing and hot weather pretty much precluded sightings. Perhaps add a morning cruise at 9:30 or 10:00? Over all, we enjoyed the cruise and would rate it 95% +.

Wonderful Cruise

I would wholeheartedly recommend this cruise for old and young alike. The cruise, fortunately is also handicapped friendly. The crew were all friendly, humurous and tried to please. The only 2 drawbacks were that, if you can, try to arange your cruise on a day when no bus tours are scheduled. After waiting in line for 3/4 of an hour before the cruise, a tour bus arrived, with seniors, about 10 minutes before the cruise. All the seniors from the bus got on the cruise FIRST, before anyone else that waited for about 1 hour. We were all very indignant. When I questioned the ticketing girl regarding this, she informed me that if it wasn't for the bus tours, there wouldn't be ANY cruise. After we boarded, I told the captain about what had happened and he profusely apologized and announced, over the loadspeaker, that he was very sorry this had happened, but, should't have. The other unfortunate thing was that there were supposed to be 2 lines. One for reservations and one for stand-by tickets (walk-ons), which never happened. People that had no reservations were sold tickets before a lot of us that had reservations. I just don't understand what the point was in acquiring reservations if you can buy tickets at the wicket ahead of the reservations anyway. All-in-all the cruise was wonderful and very informative. Lots to see and many photo ops of very unusual things.
