Fantastic show - great value!

This was my second time visiting the Billie. The entire play was beautifully written and performed. Funny, sad, exciting, dramatic - it has a little of everything. As a New Orleans native, the parts of the play focusing on Katrina and the politics surrounding it were dead on - Thanks Jackie Alexander! And for the price, it's a real gem. Stop Off - Broadway for an evening and check out Brooklyn's finest community theatre: The Billie Holiday Theatre!

Good Independent Play

I had the pleasure of watching "The High Priestess of Dark Alley". I found it to be a very entertaining independent play that dealt with a couple of serious issues, yet also had a nice blend of humor as well. Would definitely recommend that others see this play.

Funny yet Emotional

I really enjoyed this play. Although it was focused around the issue of a marriage for convenience, the playwright was creative it weaving the point of being open to love and expressing your feelings before it's too late. The play was very humorous, but this aspect of the play was thought provoking and emotional. It made me realize that some people can find it challenging to love and be loved for fear of being abandoned or not loved in return. But you have to take a chance in expressing your feelings to those who love you before its too late. I would highly recommend this play.

How do you spell E X C E L L E N T! It was the absolute best for the year. I believe since 6/06 I have seen 4 plays that ranged from ok to hum drum drum and offbeat, however, and to be precise if this were on Broadway with the same group of folk, I would have paid for the $100.00 seats and believe me I am 1 economical person : ). Most definitely I was ecstatic and raved about it to the folk on my job hurrying them to catch this. The repoire of the characters was wonderful, the timing between Tyrone and his cousin was perfect. A standing ovation in my heart and action given the same, may I say salute'.. Loved it Please share with the group of actors because it was certainly on my heart to write to the Billie Holiday theatre. Rosemary McCray

Not really funny
Four Men On A Couch

I felt that if the play had more improv then it would have been funny. The description of the play made it seem as if it was going to be hilarious, but it was not. I was very disappointed at the very first act. When the second act came around there was more improv so some of the things being said made the play funny. It was a waste of my $23. It was a good thing I fronted the whole bill, because it was a Christmas gift for my friends during our annual girl's weekend. I felt that it was a gift that I wish I could have took back and bought something more enjoyable and useful for $23, more like $25 a piece. I am from Somerset, New Jersey. I probably would have had more fun at the Stress Factory Comedy Club in New Brunswick, NJ for a cheaper price. I would not recommend this play or even this theatre to anyone. It has a great look on the outside and the inside lobby, but the theatre itself is horrible. Then you all have the nerve to tell me I cannot have a drink or food in the theatre when the theatre is not up to par. The bathrooms were not even immaculate, they were awful, the only stall that was clean enough to use, you had to lift the door in order to lock the door. Then the parking garage that you all recommend is horrible to a point where the attendant gives you a receipt on a post-it note that is has "PD" written on it with some type of signature to state that you paid. The parking office had incense burning and he had the cordless phone under his hat as he was talking to someone on the phone. All in all it is best for me to pay Broadway prices at least I can get a better looking and clean facility. I love to support African-American events, but this is 2008 and we as a people need to get it together and present ourselves better. Billie Holiday probably would be turning over in her grave when she compares what she came from and did for African-Americans to see that it is still being presented and represented in this way.

The High Priestess is Highly Recommended

They say your most hidden treasures are the most valuable - Well, this is what I felt about the High Priestess of Black Alley. I took my mother to see it on her 82nd birthday and we both thought it was wonderful. I've taken her to Broadway shows in the past and this play was just as outstanding, plus a lot less money. All the continued success to all who were involved in this show.

Each main character suffiently grew within the role and was able to depict sensitivity and humor. I felt like I was transported to their homes and was watching their lives spin the tale without their knowledge. Sassy Momas was wonderfully refreshing, and immensly funny. I plan to follow the writer to check out her future work/plays. I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Leisa Gibson

GREAT FOR SINGLES

I enjoyed my night out. I laughed because it was entertaining. It was a play advertised for teenagers and up. I would not have been comfortable seeing the play with a 13,14,15,16,17or 18 year old because of the sexual overtones. My teenager could see the play with his friends, not with Mommy. All the performers were great, but Mr. Nixon Cesar was excellent. I recommend this community play. Good Luck to the actors. Sheila Glover

Real Life

the play gave a real life story that everyone can relate. You could laugh, be anger, be sad, get hurt and still want the best result. we can carry accessive baggages for years and never discuss the issue but we need too. Many times we lost what life has to offer us as to holding back. i could see this play again.
