Tour with audience interaction

This was a good tour with lots of interaction required (we got to be the band on the bus). We wouldn't have gone to these places had we not gone on this tour.

The most fun you'll ever have while learning a ton

I have been living in Nashville for 5 years, I met up with a group of friends from Michigan and St.Loius. There were 5 adults, 2 kids and all 7 of us had a blast. It was the most expensive activity we had planned, and it was worth every penny (actually it was worth more than they charged). We had so much fun, saw things we would've missed otherwise and learned a ton of interesting (and important) facts. I highly recommend it to anyone going to Memphis. I am gratefull that I had friends visiting because otherwise I would've missed this treasure right in my back yard (well if you consider a 3 hour road trip "right in my back yard"). Go for it, you won't be disappointed!

We took the Memphis Mojo tour with a group of friends. Our group included people from 4 years old to 41, and we all loved every moment! We got amazing music historical detail, an insane amount of laughter, and a perfect trip around Memphis! We (and all the members of our tour) have heartily recommended the tour to everyone we met. Keep up the great work - and say hello to Memphis Jones for us!

Best part of our Memphis trip

We just spent 4 days in Memphis doing all the typical tourist activities, Graceland, Beale Street, Zoo, etc. My wife and I agee that the Backbeat Tour was the best activitity we had over our entire stay. And it is the one activity we would do again when we return to Memphis. We booked online for a Saturday 10:00am Mojo Tour. While the Backbeat web site wasn't very intuitive to use, we eventually got on the Zerve site which made purchasing the tickets easy. Arriving the next morning it turned out I and my family were the only ones ready to go. While I can't believe it is very profitable to run the tours for just three customers we left on time and were made to feel very welcomeand that they were glad to have us aboard. Our tour guide was a young, extermely outgoing guy who seemed to enjoy have just the three of us to speak to. He sang and played guitar with great energy. He had a lot of little tid bits he was able to throw in to the tour and he seems to really enjoy talking about the history of Memphis and it's music. Our guide was very knowledgable, and he delivered the tour with energy and enthusiaism. He even got my daugther to participate a little, even though at age 12 she was very sefl conscience that there was such a small group. Without pushing too hard he kept her and all of us actively engaged during the tour. The Mojo tour includes a stop at Sun Studios and a tour there run by the Sun Studio organization. The Sun Studio portion of the tour was great too, but that part can be scheduled without Backbeat Tours. One thing I really appreciated is that there was little overlap between what we heard on the bus verses on the studio tour. The Backbeat guide pretty much knew everything we were told during the studio tour and rather than repeating it he embellished on the studio information. All in all we had a great time on the tour and we recommend it to anyone traveling to Memphis.

Time-Traveling Through Epicenter of American Music

My sister is a rocker chick who lives her life in the music industry, frequently traveling back and forth across the country working gigs or seeing bands do their thing. So when she said we should meet up in Memphis for a weekend, I knew I could not plan just any normal bus tour. We had to make the pilgrimage to the rock-n-roll mecca known as Graceland, but I knew little else about the city itself. A bus tour is a good way to learn about a tourist town....but they often are filled with a bunch of geriatric stuff-shirts looking to see the world from an air-conditioned window. Hell, they don't call them Greyline Tours for nothing. I knew my sister would never go for that type of thing and it wasn't something that appealed much to me or my wife either. But the Memphis Mojo Tour looked different. For one, the bus was straight out of 1955! Oh, and there was no air conditioning at all! It was hot...smokin' hot...but not just because the sun was beaming down on us. Our guide through space and time was none other than Memphis Jones. A high-spirited, motor-mouthed, long haired guy with an all-American stars and stripes guitar and a rockin' singing voice. As the bus began moving away from the Beale street Backbeat Tours box office, we were serenaded by Mr. Jones to the sounds of Chuck Berry's "Memphis, Tennessee". The bus had a variety of tambourines, bongos and little "shaker eggs" that allowed us to play along with each song and really get into whole Memphis vibe the way it was meant to be done...with music and song and the smell of diesel in the air. Now that's rock-n-roll! We heard (and sang) blues, country, gospel, R&B, funk and old rock'n'roll songs. And with each song came a story or a bit of history as we glided by the various locations that helped make American music what it is today. So many voices and music styles came out of Memphis. We learned about H.C. Handy, Robert Johnson, BB King, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ike Turner, and so many more. And of course time and music was dedicated to Elvis Presley. That goes without saying. I wasn't much of an Elvis fan before this trip but I have a lot more respect for him and his music now. We learned about the tragic history of the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. King was assassinated. But Memphis Jones also told us about all the great Stax Records music that was written there as well (and how the tragedy is being used in a positive way by teaching people about the history of civil rights in America). Unfortunately travel delays meant my sister wasn't able to take the tour. But we're planning on doing it again the very next time we can, which will be sooner rather than later as this is an awesome city to visit! If you can only do one thing while in Memphis, I would tell you to take the Memphis Mojo Tour! It is a perfect way to learn about all the important spots in the city. Then I would say either go to Graceland or to the National Civil Rights Museum (hopefully both).

We truly enjoyed the Memphis MoJo Tour!! Our guide was great. He was very knowlegable. Our kids really liked it, they learned a lot about the history of music in Memphis. They didn't realize that some of the songs they know today come from years ago.

My friend and I went on the MOJo tour while in Memhphis. It was WELL DONE, a lot of fun and laughter and good songs. It was a good overview of history as well. The young man who gave the tour was quite good-personble. What was not so great was the temperature of the bus. You say it is air conditioned, but it was very warm. Probably all you need to do is to clean your air ducts. They were exceedingly dirty looking. It would help air flow tremendously. Also perhaps a few more instruments for the patrons.

Memphis Jones was our tour guide andin additionto being very knowledgeable about the history of Memphis and its music he had asense of humor, plays the guitar and sings very well. We usually don't do this kind of tour but found that we saw a lot of Memphis we would have otherwise missed and learned a lot about the city without having to contend withtraffic. I would definitely recommend the tour for someone who isn't going tobe in town long.
