Good but too long

I took the tour with my husband and 2 children (age 16 and 10). We didn't see nearly the animals we thought we would see; a few birds, a couple of manta rays, some fish but nothing like we thought. The tour was supposed to be 2.5 hours it ended up being around 3 hours, way too long for our kids. We were ready to head back after hour 1 because the tour guide talked and talked and talked and we didn't really have a chance to ask anything or even think about what he was saying because he would go on and on about another topic. It was in a word, exhausting. It was fun to go through the mangroves and to see the house boats but really this is not a tour for children or anyone under the age of 18. If you are athletic and you don't mind the hard work and you are lower to middle age this tour is for you. But if you have children go ahead and pass, there's so many more things that would benefit them on the island besides this tour.

My husband and I were among a small group of 6 people; we were guided through the mangroves on a morning trip. It was really wonderful and if our schedule permitted we would have returned for the night tour. My only disappointment was that I couldn't always hear the tour guide because our group spread out and the guide wasn't always near enough to hear what he had to say. The mangroves were really wonderful, we saw fish, crabs, birds, sea urchins, aquatic plants, etc. It was our first trip to the Keys; when we return we will definitely want to take another tour with Blue Planet. I recommend Blue Planet kayak tours to anyone interested in getting close to the mangroves, and learning more about ecosystem that they are part of. The Blue Planet staff were friendly, professional, and knowledgeable, they provided transportation to the site and back, all for a very reasonable price. A great trip!

Fun day on the water, just be selective on the day

We happen to go on a day when the neighboring Navy Base was having maneuvers, so lots of loud jets overhead that limited the amount of wildlife.

beautiful day!

My husband and I had never kayaked before, so we were looking forward to the day. Our guide, Chris, was very knowledgable about the history of the area and the sea life, marine life, and bird life we witnessed that day. He set a pace that was both comfortable and enjoyable. We were able to choose either tandem or single kayaks. Although I was concerned that being on the water from 10:30am til 1:00pm might be too hot a time to be out, the wind and intermittent shade from kayaking close to the shore helped to make it very comfortable. It helped to make our trip to Key West unforgetable!

Bad guide, needs a new job

We had a beautiful day, but our guide was intolerant of everything. He disliked the jets, the jet skies, the boats, people with children, etc. We had three parties in the group, and one of them was a lady with her little boy. She was not good with the paddling thing and he pretty much left her to fend for herself. After waiting for her several times I finally hooked her up to our boat and my wife and I towed her the last hour of the trip through the mangroves. He never even said thank you but seemed frustrated she was there. I would recommend taking an eco tour, maybe even with this company but not with our male guide. I would tell you his name but he never introduced himself (should have been a clue) but he was probably 40 and extremely arrogant. Try a different tour.

Fun time on the bay

The Kayak trip we took was great. Our guide was very knowledgeable and clearly enjoyed what he was doing. His experience and friendly laid back manner made our trip a great deal of fun. It was a terrific way to learn about the ocean and sea life. Our trip was small so it was like we had our own private guide but I would recommend the tour for groups of any size. It was super easy to make the reservations and the owner was friendly and very helpful in setting everything up. We have taken other kayak tours in the Keys but this was the best by far.

The guide was very knowledgeable about marine life, the water was beautiful, and it gave us a chance to get some paddling in and enjoy the sun and the sea air. We saw a lot of different ocean "critters." The paddling portion of the trip offered a chance for moderate exercise but was not overly strenuous. Great for all levels, including beginners.

A very different way to experience Key West
Fri, Sep 7, 12   6:45 PM Laroo92 Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Group of Friends
In our group of 4, only one had kayaked before. Really no experience needed, although you have to be willing to make an effort and be open to a little safe adventure. You will use arm, back, and shoulder muscles so you may be a little sore the next day. Well worth the effort! We reserved two tandem kayaks so we had a better chance of staying together. This worked out really well. Maneuvering is easy to master. The kayaks are stable. It is very neat to be out in the mangrove swamps at night, skimming along on top of the water. (you are provided little headlamps). We saw crabs, sea cucumber, octopus, lobster, shrimp, horseshoe crab, fighting conch, and stingrays, as well as hundreds of birds at Bird Island. The wildlife moves quickly so you have to make an effort to stay close to Sarah, the guide. She is very knowledgeable about the eco-system.

I have only kayaked one other time. It was interesting & enjoyable. Definetly worth the time & effort. Not to strenuous although it was a little windy. Very educational. I liked the starfish the best. Wished I would have seen a dolphin.

Great fun

My girlfriend and I booked a tandem kayak trip and had lots of fun! We reserved a hotel pickup and got a phone call the day before with details and time and were picked up right on time. You are driven to a strange area behind a building/taxi storage lot but dont worry it's a short walk to where the kayaks are and before long you are on your way. They provide zip lock bags if you need to keep things in, they have a bathroom and water as well. It turned out we were the only one so we had a private tour!! We got to see a sea anemone, starfish, sea cucumbers and lots of fish. Going through the mangrove trees was a very unique experience, one not to be missed and our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly and answered all of our questions. Much better than just kyaking on open water - you actually get to see things!!! There is room on the kayak for a cooler if you want to bring food, although we did not have time to eat anything. There is no need to wear a bathing suit as we did not get wet at all, but I would bring water and sunscreen. Have fun!

Our tour ended up just being myself and my husband with our guide Chris. We enjoyed the leisurely pace and saw multiple types of herons, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, a horseshoe crab, sand dollars, many types of fish and starfish. I really enjoyed kayaking through the mangroves, it was a very unique experience.

Great tour of local area, mangroves and wildlife ! Just make sure someone does a head count so that all are accounted for throughout the tour, even the slow and weary stragglers!

Guide was a little grumpy but overall it was fun
Sat, Dec 17, 11   4:45 PM KristyL714 Female 30-39 Domestic Tourist(s) Other
I think the grumpiness of the guide stemmed from the fact that we were the only two on the tour and booked it at 11 the night before so Chad came in thinking he didn't have any work that night when he, in fact, did. Still, that wasn't our fault. We had fun despite his grumpiness and I recommend the tour generally.
