Blue Planet Kayak's Sunset Mangrove Tour was recommended to me by a friend who had gone some months earlier, and I'm happy that I listened. The experience is both educational and entertaining, allowing you to interact with the local wildlife in a relaxed and adventurous manner. The guides are both respectful and knowledgeable and the whole experience was a welcome "quiet adventure" as compared to the jet skiing and binge drinking of the main Key West areas. If you're looking to see a more natural aspect of the Keys then do yourself a favor and take a look. We all agreed that it was the best money we spent on our trip - we saw sting rays, fire coral, shrimp, lobsters, live sponges, adult and juvenile queen conch, bio-luminescent algae and a variety of urchins and star fish, as well as the varied birdlife above the water. It was really just a great time. Truly! |

Our tour was all it was advertised to be. We paddled at a leisurely pace through beautiful scenery. Our guide, Katie, pointed out wildlife and provided interesting facts about the marine environment. Soaring birds; stingrays; the red eyes of shrimp; starfish; and much more. The sunset was spectacular. The entire evening was serene and memorable. |

A one mile paddle to a small mangrove through high winds and currents. The guide struggled to find living organisms to show the group. Overall I thought it was boring and a waste of 2 1/2 hours. I would not recommend this tour to anyone. |

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our kayak trip. Chad was very patient and informative. We were fascinated by the different marine animals that we saw. My husband's favorite part was going through the mangrove tunnels. We highly recommend this tour. |

My wife and I and our three teenage children (19, 17, 13) had a great time. James was our guide and his practical knowledge of the marine life in the bay from growing up in the Keys, combined with what he has learned from his marine biologist wife and father was truly (and literally) enlightening. For me this was really the high point of our week long visit.
I was a little concerned when we first entered an opening into a mangrove key that was barely wide enough for a single kayak at a time to pass, but it soon became clear that James knew what he was doing and was not going to put anyone in any danger. He set a great example for the kids by picking up every bit of trash he found along the way and did a great job of spotting critters on the bottom and bringing them up for us to see and touch.
On the way back to the dock we turned off our headlamps and tail lamps on the kayaks and were treated to a light show on the bottom as James thumped on his kayak to trigger a bio-luminescent response. Later, with the headlamps on, you could see the red glowing eyes of loads of shrimp in the sea grass. Just as we were re-entering the marina, a school of tarpon came through and were splashing all around us and making eerie flashes of light and shadow below us.
Overall, it was a great experience and I recommend it highly. |

This tour was recommended by our concierge at the Ambrosia Key West. An excellent tour in the Key West mangroves. Our guide (Patrick) went the extra mile to make sure we had a great experience and really knew where to find the wildlife. There were many opportunities to actually reach out and touch some of the shellfish and invertebrates (for those who wished to). Also, enjoyed and appreciated their free shuttle pick up from our B&B. |

Nice way to spend an evening away from Duval St. Amazing wildlife including many kinds of birds and sea life. A Ballyhoo actually jumped into our kayak while paddling after dark. That caused some excitement! I'd recommend single kayaks instead of the double which was tight manuvering in the mangroves and difficult to coordinate paddle strokes. |

No mosquitos, no hard paddling, just lots of sea birds at the island rookery while the sunset followed by sealife and then a mangrove maze in the dark, spotting the eyes of shrimp and lobster. The photoluminescence was so cool. Go do it! |

Had a great time but missed our pick up time due to confusing instructions in the paperwork, Luckily we were able to reschedule that afternoon...clarify pick up time. Also, do not think we need a pick up time and place only to caravan behind the pickup van through lots of traffic to drive past our condo and to our destination. ..we could have avoided waiting in Wendy's parking lot by haveing a detainedl and tried and true map to get there on our own.
The trip was fun otherwise! Nice guide! |
