Surprisingly Enjoyable

We decided to do this tour at the last minute on the advice of our hotel concierge and glad we did. We expected to do a lot of paddling around but spent most of the time cruising the mangrove islands and streams, stopping, viewing and learning about the interesting marine life James, our guide, was finding all over. We found the kayaks easier to handle and dry compared to our prior canoeing experiences and my old biology interests was rekindled by our guide's professional knowledge of the plant and marine species around us. This is a get your money's worth, non-commercial/high overhead production, that included everything such as water and transportation between our hotel and the dock in the ticket price. We are looking forward to doing their night tour on our next visit to Key West.

James was Awesome!

We had a bit of wind and had never kayaked before our tour. James did a great job encouraging, redirecting and waiting for us. His description of the mangrove was informative, but the things he picked up from the water were what made it great! I won't spoil the surprise, but it was the best thing we did on vacation. Next visit, we'll do the night trip for sure.

Kayaking in paradise.

Although I would say August is probably a death sentence to sit in the sun for two hours it was worth it. I'm from south Florida and the kayaking is ok but nothing like the keys. The water is perfect, the boat traffic isn't a problem. The tour guide Chris is great. Bring lots of water and an energy bar.

THE BEST ACTIVITY WE DID ON OUR FLORIDA VACATION!
Tue, Apr 1  6:45 PM swight01 Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Family With Children
First of all, my overall experience around activites, restaurants and other tourist stops in Florida was one of mediocre to poor service. Doesn't Florida know that it survives on tourism?! Refreshingly, this was not the case on the Blue Planet Moonlight Kayak tour! The service was examplary from start to finish! I flew into Fort Lauderdale with my children (age 11 & 14) to spend some time in the Lauderdale area and in the Keys with my children and my niece (age 26). Of all the activities that we did, this was not only the best, but also the least expensive major activity we did during our 10 day trip. Other activities (including dolphin viewing, boat rides, snorkeling, airboat ride with multiple alligator sitings) were good, but this was by far the favorite of everyone in our group. We had all been paddling (at least canoeing) before, but my daughter had never kayaked before. This was not a problem. With minimal instruction, anyone can kayak. Our guide, Katie, was outstanding. She led us on a tour that lasted a total of 2.5 hours. We paddled out into the ocean to watch the sunset. On the way out, she spotted, picked up and passed around a large starfish, several sea cucumbers and lots of conch - alive, dead and dead but inhabited. Katie also had a small net to pick up creatures that couldn't be picked up and passed with bare hands. After adding a light to the back of each of our kayaks and providing each of us a headlamp, Katie then led us into the mangroves via a beautiful trail that wound through the trees. There we saw small crabs on the trees, weird jellyfish, and a variety of other sea critters. We even turned out our headlamps for awhile so we could see the bioluminecent organisims in the water that lit up like fireflys in the sea! It happened to be beautiful clear night that was awesome for star gazing as well! I would highly recommend this adventure to anyone who can get in and out of the kayak! Honestly, this was something that I never would of thought of doing but turned out to be a truly remarkable experience with a truly remarkable guide!! DO IT!! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

Best Time on Key West

My husband an I recently took this trip. It was the best thing that we did on our trip to key West. I had never kayaked before, but was able to do this trip ok. Our guide was good and patient. We were able to see all kinds of wild life and actually touch them. Great time and we would do it again.

This was the highlight of our trip...and trust me we enjoyed Key West thoroughly. Our group was comprised of three generations (my Mom, myself and my daughter). The scenery and the view are just amazing. What really made this trip different from other outdoor activities was Chris our guide. He was so low key, super informative, and even made my Mom feel like a great kayaker! In addition, the curb side pick up and drop off was an added bonus.

A Great Time On the Water

This was our first time to Key West and wanted to experience something new that we had never done before. Chad was our guide and he was wonderful! He was so full of knowledge about the waters and all that lived in it. We went for fun but ended up really learning a lot. I never thought learning about sea life could be so interesting.

After dark kayaking a new & exciting experience
Wed, Feb 19  5:30 PM Suebrain Female 50-59 International Tourist(s) Individual
The after dark kayaking was a new and exciting experience for me, and one I would recommend for sure. Blue Planet offered hotel pick up which I took advantage of, their location is quite a distance from downtown Key West. The dock area we launched from was very small, it took a while to get 10 of us in kayaks and on the water. Once we got paddling, our tour guide Jamie showed us many "sea creatures" , with care and expertise. We watched the sun set, then put on our head lamps and paddled easily across the bay. The manouvering thru the mangroves was a fun challenge. To me, the bioluminescent bacteria that light up like fireflies was the highlight, very cool! Definitely something a little different to do in Key West, away from the crowds on Duval and a chance to learn and appreciate nature's show.

Fun, calm-water kayak trip
Sun, Feb 16  10:30 AM sueb13 Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Group of Friends
Fun, calm water kayak trip with guide knowledgeable about local waters and marine life. Suitable for novice kayakers. That day the navy jets were training around Boca Chica lagoon, which made for a noisy trip... not my favorite thing, although others on my trip rather enjoyed it.

nice trip on the shallow waters of Key West
Sat, May 8, 10   1:10 PM subrizi Female 20-29 International Tourist(s) Group of Friends
The kayak trip is relaxing and easy, even for beginners. We saw many birds and some marine animals (snails, clams, anemone, crabs, small fishes, jellyfish). The guide was friendly and explained interesting facts about the habitat we were exploring. Kayaking around the mangroves following narrow paths was fun. On the downside there is quite a lot of waste (plastic, metal, ...) along the tour, I think it would be good to clean it up. Overall an enjoyable way to spend your afternoon.

We will do this again

We just did this last week and we strongly recommend the Sunset tour. James was our friendly guide and in spite of it being only 60 degrees and cloudy we had a great time. We didn't get to see a good sunset but once the sun was down all the critters came out. James was able to find dozens of different animals (conch, starfish, sea cucumber, crab, lobster, octopus, etc) for us to see and sometimes hold. It was a really unique tour and well worth the money. Bring a camera and enjoy! Kristen and Steve

The marine life kayak tour was a very worthwhile experience. It was interesting and fun. The guide was very knowledgeable and personable. He searched for and found a variety of marine life that he scooped up carefully so we were able to look and touch. The kayaks were comfortable. The 2.5 hours stretched almost to 3 hours because none in our group wanted to leave! I would do this activity again next time I go to the Keys!
