Kayaking: Great way to spend a morning in Key West

Our experience was excellent from start to finish. It began when they picked us up at the cottage we were renting in downtown Key West. The van was waiting for us outside at exactly the time that was specified. We went in the morning (pick up around 9:45 am and were returned before 1 pm - just in time to go out for a nice lunch). We were thrilled to get a personal tour - we were the only 2 people in our group! (Apparently not an unusual bonus when in Key West in low season....Sept/Oct) We took a 2 person kayak - I paddled and my wife took pictures. While we made this choice because my wife has a shoulder injury and we weren't sure she could paddle for 2 hours, given half would be against the wind and the tide, it turned out to be a great decision because her hands were free for picture taking. I would recommend this. We got some great ones which we'll send to Sara to post on facebook. Sara, our guide, allowed us to poke along at our own speed and was very knowledgable about the local plants and sea life. We handled sea urchins and a star fish, and saw egrets, blue herons, a white heron, jelly fish, sea anomones, a small spotted stingray, a small nurse shark and the highlight - a huge manatee that came right up to the kayak and stayed to visit for several minutes. The mangroves are very interesting to paddle through and the whole experience was calm and relaxing. You don't have to go very far to see everything. Of course, you never know what you'll see on any given day....I think we got lucky to see all the sea life that we encountered. We enjoyed it very much and highly recommend it. It was a great way to spend a morning in Key West.

wonderful time, sarah was an informed and enthusiastic guide, showed us an incredible number of ocean inhabitants and presented a wealth of information about the area. I have gushed excessively since my return from the keys and let friends know this was the highlight of my trip. my daughter and son-in-law were not as adventurous as I in handling the critters sarah had netted for our inspection but they did take lots of pictures including the adolescent nurse shark nick posted on your facebook web page. thanks for a wonderful experience cate matisi

Not romantic
Sun, May 26, 13   7:15 PM gsfrye Female 30-39 Domestic Tourist(s) Family Without Children
I would not describe our experience as romantic at all. Leader was somewhat demanding and even appeared annoyed when we couldn't move fast enough in our kayaks to see something she pointed out in the water. There was not much opportunity to take pictures, especially together. Overall the experience was very edcational and interesting but should not be advertised as romantic.

Sunset kayaking is the way to go!

My wife and I are avid birders but novice kayakers but, fortunately, our love of birds (and our strong desire to see the species found in the Key West area) overcame any apprehension we had about paddling in the dark or over large stretches of water. What a treat this trip was: the many herons, egrets, pelicans, cormorants. and even white-crowned pigeons during the daylight hours, and spiny lobsters, shrimps, crabs, and rays after sunset (thanks to the headlamps we'd been given). All this while negotiating narrow lanes through thick mangroves or open water with a stiffish breeze blowing. Being novice paddlers, we often fell behind the group and, consequently, missed a good bit of what Chad (our able and witty guide) had to say. If we can make some suggestions based on our experience, they would be: (1) slow down a bit so that stragglers like us can keep up with the group; (2) have the guide use some kind of sound-amplifying instrument, and (3) ask the guide to use a different colored kayak tail light so that the rest of us know whom to follow in the dark.

It was truly a wonderful experience. If you want to experience kayaking at its best , please call these folks for the nighttime kayak tour. Just great! No experience needed but kids over 10 best if in their own kayak which I strongly recommend. Thanks Sarah for the experience

This was an exceptional activity. We love to learn and our knowledgable guide provided information about our surroundings and sea life. We were in a relaxed and friendly environment which is needed for the varied ablilities of the kayakers.

A wonderful experience!

What a great way to spend a few hours! Even though we are experienced kayakers, there were rookies in our group and we all managed to stay together with our wonderful guide. Blue Planet provided comfortable boats, a knowledgeable and accommodating staff, and they opened our eyes to the wonders found among the mangroves. We were able to view a sea hare, sea stars, jellies, a queen conch, a sea cucumber, a basket star, stingrays and a bonnet shark while kayaking at a very comfortable pace. Thank you Blue Planet!

I'd do it again!

I went with my mom in a tandem kayak and thoroughly enjoyed the sunset kayak tour. It was one of the highlights in our 9 day vacation. The guide was relaxed and approachable, and made the experience amazing. We started the trip in the evening and kayaked around bird island: a small mangrove island the pelicans/cormorants/and other birds have chosen to roost together, and we watched the sunset (which was beautiful), we then donned headlamps and kayaked into a mangrove tunnel. We got to see so many creatures, the guide lifted a sea slug out of the water that released purple ink, a queen conch, a horseshoe crab, a sea star, and a decorating crab. We saw a yellow stingray, mangrove crabs, and a lobster. Not to mention the 3 MANATEES that were in the marina of our launch site. It was a peaceful adventure and want to do it again through the same company next time I'm in Florida!

WONDERFUL TRIP !
Tue, Feb 26, 13   5:30 PM kayo222 Female 40-49 Domestic Tourist(s) Family Without Children
I booked this trip to experience a little bit of the flora and fauna of the Keys and recieved MUCH more than I expected. It was amazing ! There were both skilled paddlers and beginners in our group (the beginners had been in a kayak a couple times) and everyone enjoyed it thoroughly. Our guide James was incredibly knowledgable and had a knack for locating hidden sea life for us to examine and learn about...3 kinds of starfish one was HUGE, sea cucumbers, 3 varieties of conch, lobster, shrimp, a SEA TURTLE actually treaded water within our kayak circle for a minute or so (but don't expect this, as James stated that this was a first for him in 13 years of guiding tours--we were lucky ! ), even a stingray...I am forgetting many of our cool finds, I know, but there were probably 20 different sea creatures that we examined and touched. James knows so much about both the area and the inhabitants. He was kind and very patient with all of us. I highly recommend this trip for folks of ALL AGES....anyone interested in the world around them (and even for kids who say they aren't, because once there, I think they will LOVE it !). My sister was concerned about paddling in the dark with a headlamp initially, but after the trip she thanked me profusely for kind of leaning on her to attend....she says was not even a bit scared and enjoyed every minute of the trip ! My consensus? BOOK IT !

My husband and I were visiting the Keys for the first time and I had read about this tour on Trip Advisor .... We highy recommend this activity. The guide was informative and found things in the mangrove for us all to see and touch if we wanted .... ( except no touching those jellyfish ! ) it was a beautiful sunny not to windy day ... we took the afternoon tour and they picked us up at our Hotel ( Hilton ) .... we will do this again next time we are in the Keys !
