Had a great time! Informative, beautiful! I will never look at mangroves the same way again. I know so much more about them now. Sarah was a great guide. The van came to the hotel to pick us up, we didn't have to worry about anything. We had never kayaked before they went over everything and everything was provided. Perfect!

Pleasant and educational

From the time we were picked up at our hotel until the time we were returned we felt as if we were being treated to a fun and relaxing trip. While it was a fairly windy day the guide ( Katie) made sure that we went at an easy enough pace for everyone and she stopped to explain the mangroves, showing the different sea creatures while telling us what they needed to do to survive.

Peaceful and Educational

We arrived at the pick up point and was a little worried that I wouldn't know who would pick us up, so I called the office. They were very helpful. The Blue Planet van arrived right on time and Andy was a delight. He led us to the place with no problems. They offered us water and use of the bathroom before we left. Our tour guide was Sarah. She had a great personality, very funny and very knowledgeable. Our trip was very serene. The mangroves were beautiful and Sarah showed us many treasures along the way. Queen Conch, Sea Urchin, Nurse Sharks, Jelly Fish and more!

Fun but bot for beginners.

The tour was fun and educational and the staff was friendly but it was not suitable for people who never kayaked before too long and seats were very uncomfortable for 2 1/2 hours of sitting.

Great Guide

Very relaxing and very informative. The guide had a friendly, laid back personality but, at the same time, he took his work seriously and worked extremely hard to assure that we saw everything we came out to see. He clearly knew his marine biology and explained a lot without sounding like a textbook lecture. Definitely the best excursion during our 7-day vacation.

This was a great and unique tour of Key West that I think most tourists don't see. Our guide was fun and knowledgeable and did a great job of finding and pointing out the unique sea life of the keys. We got to hold sea stars, conchs, and even a nurse shark. It was a fun experience, well worth it. Just bring sun screen, you will be in open waters in full sun. Thanks Blue Planet!

Great educational experience!

I wanted to take my 8yo daughter to explore the natural ecosystem in Key West. The Boca Chica Marine Life Kayak Tour was exactly what I was looking for: an amazing educational experience wrapped in a fun activity for my daughter. Our guide, Sarah, was incredibly knowledgeable. She pulled out all sorts of creatures from the water and gave detailed stories on plants and birds we found around the mangroves. You could tell she is a passionate ecologist. I do warn that this tour involves a little workout (especially for me, since my daughter and I were in a tandem kayak, and she was too busy looking around instead of paddling), but the scenery is so breathtaking that it really doesn't feel like one. In short, if you are looking to spend a quiet couple of hours in a natural Key West habitat, or want to learn a lot more about that environment, I highly recommend this tour. Your kids will love it too!!

Sunset Tour

Last year I did a kayak tour on the west coast of Florida and it was a highlight of that vacation. The guide was excellent and very helpful to the less skilled individuals in the group. He was informative and I learned so much about the ecosystems and just had an overall great experience. This year I convinced my group of four women on vacation to do the sunset tour, even though some had limited kayaking experience. We had an enjoyable experience, DESPITE our tour guide, James. From the beginning of the trip, he seemed mildly annoyed at everything. He never gave clear definitive instructions on anything. When he made an attempt to explain we were going to do next, he was generally standing in his kayak speaking AWAY from the group and the entire group only heard bits and pieces of the explanation. Don't get me wrong, we loved the idea of the tour and the information that was given regarding the sea life that we saw was very cool. James just seemed like he was frustrated by the lack of kayaking skills, the need for him to repeat instruction (which meant he said the same thing just LOUDER), and the fact that we had no idea of what was coming up next. For example, when we went through the mangrove, half the group didn't hear that we were to follow him and sat in their kayaks. It would have been helpful to have specific instuctions such as splitting the oars or just leaving the oar in the kayak and pull yourself along with the branches because of the tight surroundings. Our group of four are all teachers, and we all agreed that James certainly could have used better methods to explain and instruct the group; it would have made for a much more enjoyable trip. His attitude really took away from this amazing trip. With any other instructor, I would be giving this trip a higher rating.

A must do if you like nature

Fun, educational, and amazing. However be prepared to paddle across wide and at times deep bodies of water. Kids may struggle when fighting the winds. After reading other reviews I wish our guide had been Chad. You might want to consider booking when he's the guide.

Great Experience!

We saw this kayaking trip on a list of Key West family activities and decided it would be a great experience. Despite the fact that my two kids (ages 8 and 11) had never kayaked we all had a great time and had no issues keeping up. The initial paddling out to the mangroves takes some work but the water is so calm it's not an issue. Despite the fact that children over 10 can have their own kayak I would recommend using a double with an adult unless the child has prior kayaking experience to avoid frustration. We saw spotted eagle rays, fish, a shark, lots of coral, and other sea life. It was such a great and different experience. Word of caution - bring sunblock and apply it regularly throughout the trip!!!!

The Boca Chica tour was great fun. Our guide Sara was very accomodating and knowledgable, and was able to point out a variety of marine life. The trip throuhg the mangrove forest was relaxing and peaceful, and this was a highlight of our trip. We can't wait to go back for another.

Unique Activity in the Keys
Tue, Apr 15  6:45 PM Perezcandy Unspecified Unspecified Domestic Tourist(s) Unspecified
The evening kayak trip was a unique activity in Key West. While the bars are nice and the other commercial sunset cruises are nice, this personal evening kayak tour was very good. The leader was knowledgeable about the creatures in the ocean and shared that with us. The trip through the red mangrove was unique and the evening made it exciting (and a fun spooky:)). To top it all off, the bioluminescence that was promised in the brochure really existed and was cool. Spend your money here with a local "mom and pop" shop and help the environment at the same time.

Highlight of Our Visit
Mon, Apr 14  6:45 PM mdhurst Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Couple on a Date
This surprise activity was the highlight of out visit to Key West. James was thorough with explanation and finding critters to see and touch. We quickly got the hang of paddling which allowed us to enjoy our surroundings and we covered lots of water. (No sore arms the next day!) We highly recommend the sunset trip and the full moon was spectacular. The sounds were ever changing with the slight breeze. Going into the mangrove was was a little scary and very exciting. The trip was much more interesting and fun than what was expected.
