Entertaining way to get to know some of the darker side of Charleston's history. Our tour guide was a great storyteller, and had tons of energy. She showed us some interesting spots and told us some wonderful tales of some of the interesting characters from Charleston's past.

The Darkside of Charleston is certainly another way of looking at the Holy City. Our showed us another side of Charleston -- it is not a ghost tour but a view of the unsavory side of life.

The tour had a lot of potential but our tour guide Lane was really weird and gave us the creeps. He only told us about the the prostitution and seemed to take it all very personally. He completely left out the crime, corruption and murder except where it pertained to the one supposed brothel he brought us to. Also, at the end of the 90 minutes he told us the tour was over and left us. He didn't even bring us back to our starting point. We were left to fend for ourselves. I might recommend the tour with another guide but if you get Lane get your money back!

Our tour guide did a great job of taking us back in time, showing us where the town brothel was, where they hung and burned people, you can stand on the very spot that slaves were traded. He was from Charleston, his family was from there and he was full of knowledge. Great Tour, I'd recommend this to anyone. My husband was a bit skeptical at first and was questioning whether our guide was making stuff up as he went, but by the end of it, he was convinced there was no way he could make up that much. It's not something you get to do everyday, so if you have the time deffinately take the tour.

I guess we could have just gotten a poor guide. We bailed 15 minutes into the walk. Might try again with a different guide.

I wasn't prepared for the language used on this tour and the tour guide was also very hard to understand. I felt there could have been more structure to this tour. It seemed like he was just saying anything that popped into his head.

The tour provided us with great information about the local Charleston area and the history....I found the tour very interesting...however, our tour guide, Lane, was not overly exciting or interesting....he did not pull you in to the tour....

The tour guide (Braxton, I think) was laid-back and funny. However, I did not feel the tour was worth the money and all the sweat. We pratically speed-walked the entire time and it was incredibly humid and uncomfortable. Since the tour is a commercial tour, guides are not allowed to take you into residential areas which is where a lot of the beautiful architecture and gardens are. If you know Charleston, you will know there is not much to look at if you are neither looking at architecture nor are along the water. The stories were entertaining enough, but not worth the price. The only real R-rated aspect of this tour was the deliberate use of curse words throughout the stories. I certainly did not feel I was "in the middle of" a murder, brothels or speakeasies. In fact, I was often "in the middle" of a parking lot, on the steps of Saks Fifth Avenue or packed into a random store's doorway. I would have rather gone on a different tour. My advice is to either check out the other tours available from Bulldog (whose service was great and whose facility was clean and air-conditioned) or just go on the boat tours and carriage rides instead.

First, I read other reviews of the Darkside Tour and people were saying they had trouble understanding the guide. We did not experience that trouble. Our tour guide, Braxton, provided us with a fun filled surprising tour. Both of us really enjoyed the interesting facts about Charleston and the individuals that have lived there along with visiting. I would definitely recommend this tour if you want something different and have a good time.
