Unique tour, but difficult to understand guide

This tour was unique in that it provided historical information on the side of Charleston that not many people see or hear about - prostitution, crime, and killings (racially motivated, tar and feathering, and hangings). The tour had a loose itinerary and the guide was interested in what everyone wanted to hear about most - or any special interests. The guide was very enthusiastic in that he even added a stop at a cemetary that wasn't actually part of our tour - and the tour ran about a half hour longer. There was a lot of walking on uneven and dark streets, but a woman on a cane did complete the tour. The down side of the tour was that many of the people on our tour had a very difficult time understanding the guide - including those in my party of 3. In fact, afterwards it seemed my Mom had missed about 50% of what the guy said, and she is certainly not hard of hearing. When asked to speak up, the guide explained it was his low country dialect. And it seemed as if he was swallowing the words a bit. So, in a nutshell, good topic and great enthusiasm on the part of the tour guide. But, very hard to understand and you could tell he had been told this in the past - he said many reviews stated this. This company provides a lot of tours of Charleston - cemetary, ghost, history, and cooking. Have been told the carriage tours are great. They might want to offer discounts for multiple tours.

Interesting Side of History

Lane was our tour guide and he was great! He encouraged us to ask questions and was able to answer all of them. No difficulty understanding his accent at all. He tailored the tour to what it was that we, as a group, wanted to see and hear about. Very informative, and very interesting aspects of history specific to Charleston that you don't get to read about in the history books. I recommend this tour to those who want a "behind the scenes" glance at the history that made Charleston what it is today!

I actually switched tours to the Ghost and Graveyard tour. I went on the 9:30 p.m. tour on Sunday evening. I believe the tour guide's name was Braxton - he was excellent, I really enjoyed his stories and his sense of humor. He worked pretty hard to make sure everybody heard him and encouraged questions.

Lane was our guide and our group liked him a lot. The things he told us about aren't what you'll hear anywhere else in town. It was cool walking around the city that late learning about the "darker" side of history. He has a great Charleston accent that you may have to really pay attention to to understand. He was very patient and encouraged us to ask questions. Glad we did it!!!

Different Spin on History

This was our first trip to Charleston and the historical information was interesting. The tour, however, did not live up to our expectations. If we had been able to enter some of the buildings it might have been more interesting.

Dark Side Tour interesting, but lowkey

Our tour guide, Lane, was knowledgable, but lacked enthusiasm. (Of course, it was a Dark Side tour, so i guess he felt being funny was not appropriate) We enjoyed and learned from his stories, but he was difficult to understand. He was aware of that and gladly repeated anything we did not understand. He acted very ill at ease like he was nervous or new to the job, but he said he had led groups since he was 14. We had no problem with the profanity, after all, it was an "adults only" tour and he did not use it a lot during the tour. All in all, we learned quite a bit and found the tour very interesting.
