I went on this tour w/3 of my friends. Our tour guide was nice enough, but I felt like he was just telling facts that he had memorized - he wasn't a 'story teller' so the tour may have been better w/a more interesting tour guide.
The first 10 minutes of the tour consisted of the group circling around him in front of the jail while he listed all the different tours that he does as he explained the certification process for Charleston Tour Guides.
He then proceeded to pass around black & white photos of what the jail originally looked like. It was pretty ridiculous. It was a night tour, so it was dark outside and the photocopies were in plastic sheets straight out of his 3-ring binder. He held the pictures and used his flashlight on them for us to see - but between the lack of light, glare & quality of the pictures it was difficult even to see what he was trying to point out.
He then proceeded around the side of the building and then to the back. Each time stopping to spout more of his 'knowledge'. After about 25 minutes we entered the jail and spent about 15 minutes inside. There are no lights inside. We were lucky that there was a man in the group who also had a flashlight which he used to help us see the steps and doorways because our guide stayed in the front of the pack - I guess the first 2 or 3 people could see where they were walking, but the rest of us were pretty blind.
Overall I think it was just a waste of time. The history of the jail is very interesting - but you can read all about it (and more) on-line for free. And quite frankly, we didnt really take a night tour of a jail simply to learn of its history, we were hoping for at least a little spookiness...none to be found. Usually I'm a big scaredy-cat...Jurassic Park gave me nightmares...but this tour did not even evoke a single goose bump.
Save your money.

We did the 9pm tour of the jail house with Ginger. She was friendly, informative and very open minded. As soon as we arrived at the building there were bats circling the jail which really helped to add to the mood. My husband. mother-in-law and nephew all believe in ghosts so were more into seeing spirts. My husband even claims that one touched his ankle when we were in the torture room. Personally I am not as much of a believer but still thouroughly enjoyed the tour, learning about the history and hearing all of Gingers stories. Would definatley recomend the tour and the company and hope to go on another tour when we return to Charleston. if you are going on the tour in the evening wear bug spray!!
Thanks! |

We purchased tickets online before we came to Charleston for the Jailhouse tour. We were VERY diappointed. It was just a person telling ghost stories. The jail house was being refurbished and the rooms we were taken to were all just empty rooms with plywood floors. We did go in one room that was supposed to be where cells were but who knows. I couldn't get past the steel beam supports and plywood floors. I guess I was hoping to see some authentic cells and other things that were actually original to the jail. Since it's all about "ghosts' stories just stay in the front of the jail where the "tour" starts that's the most authentic thing you will see. |

Don't forget your camera. I captured a ton of orbs in my pictures. The City Jail is a really eerie place to visit. I highly recommend it. The only thing that I didn't like was that at the end of the tour our guide said something negative about Savannah. I love Savannah and thought the remark was totally uncalled for. |

THIS TOUR WAS AWESOME! IT WAS MYSELF, MY BOYFRIEND, MY MOTHER, AND
MY FATHER VISITING FROM ATLANTA, GA. SUZANN WAS OUR TOUR GUIDE AND SHE WAS GREAT!! SHE WAS INFORMATIVE ABOUT THE STORIES AND SHOWED US THE DIFFERENT AREA OF THE JAIL. THERE WERE SOME AREAS OF THE JAIL THAT MADE ME FEEL LIKE A PRESENCE WAS LINGERING! WE TOOK SOME GREAT PICTURES OF ORBS AND I ALSO GOT A PICTURE OF A VORTEX. THERE WAS ALSO ANOTHER YOUNG LADY THERE THAT TOOK A PICTURE OF SUZANN, OUR TOUR GUIDE AND THERE WAS A HUGE VORTEX ON TOP OF HER IN THE PICTURE THAT LOOKED LIKE LIGHTNING. THIS PLACE IS DEFINATELY CREEPY AND I ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH.
THANK YOU SUZANN FOR THE GREAT WORK!! |

My friends and I went to Charleston for a 3 day vacation and thought we would try the Haunted Jail Tour to add some fun and excitement to our trip. We read all the other reviews and felt this one was the best as far as the scariest. We were really pumped up about it but when we got there at 9pm and the tour started it turned out to be not very scary at all - especially if you are a non-believer in ghosts. It was rather boring and the stories were ghost stories that didn't spook even the children on the tour. Some of the jail is being preserved and they don't allow you to walk through it all. You do, however, get to take as many pictures as you would like. Maybe you will spot a ghost but we didn't. If you are looking for a spook or a lot of history, this tour is not the one for you. |

Our tour guide was quite knowledgeable about the Old Jail, and definitely had a flair for story telling! There were definitely some odd things going on - we didn't capture them on camera but others in the tour group did... so be ready to experience weirdness... |

All my life Ive been what I guess you would call "sensitive". I feel, hear, and see things that I guess most other people do not sense. I dont know if its nature or nurture, but I have an unusual "gift". I went on this tour of the Old Jail in Charleston, and of course it gives you the chills just looking at it; it is so intimidating from the outside. Once you hear the stories that the tour guides tell you (she was great by the wayy!!!) It only makes it more creepy. Anyways, we made it to the second floor with nothing out of the ordinary occuring. But as soon as we walked up those old iron stairs, a heavy feeling fell over me ; it was almost like a forboding presence. While the group was on one side of the hallway, I decided to walk to the other end and take some pictures while I was alone with no interference. I snapped a shot of the end of the hallway while I was walking, and looked down to see what I had caught. Just then, out of the corner of my eye, I caught sight of a figure in one of the jail cells to my right. I looked up, and the person did not disappear. It was a short man in some weird overall type of clothing with a short button down shirt on. He was just standing there, looking at me with no real expression. I wasnt alarmed at first; it looked just like a real person. He then took a step out of the doorway to his right, and it started to dawn on me in that instant that I HAD been alone at this end. I quickly looked into the room, but no one was there. Im not gonna lie, I freaked out. I didnt even take a picture, I just got out of that room and got back to my family. I was really shaken for the rest of the night. Whoever was in that doorway that I saw, he was not in the room just seconds later. I told the tour guide, and she said that people rarely see full figures, but it is not a unique occurrence. I definately recommend this tour to anyone that wants to see or experience something that is real; maybe youll be as fortunate (or unfortunate) to see what I saw. |

The Haunted Jail tour of Charleston, SC was a great time! My Fiance' and I love doing ghost tours and this one is one of the best that we have been on. We picked up some pretty good EVP's on our recorder while inside the jail. DO THIS TOUR!!! |
