Interesting Stories

I will say that our tour was a lot of fun. Our guide was enthusiastic about the jail and really put a great deal into her presentation. I had lived in Charleston for a bit and knew of the jail before it was purchased and renovations started to take place, so it was fun to go inside the jail itself. Our guide, I believe her name was Susan, was just one hell of a good time. She was very interesting and I loved the fact she personlized the stories for us. She interacted with the entire group and made the tour a great deal of fun. I would recommend this tour with the understanding you probably won't get frightened, but all in all it is interesting to hear the history and fun to experience the jail.

For a tour with the word "haunted " in its title, it sure did not live up to expectations. The tour was interesting but was more about a history lesson then anything "haunted." Yes, the tour guide did say stuff is always seen or heard but that is pretty much the extent of the "haunted." I have also been on the Ghost Walk Tour and found that much more entertaining anf really enjoyed the various ghost stories. Perhaps, a few more stories and a little less history would work better.

We toured the haunted jailhouse with Suzane as our guide. My 10 year old daughter was with us, and she has shown an interest recently in things of this nature. The guide told the stories and would either jump at us, stomp her foot, or raise her voice at appropriate times ... and she got several reactions from the crowd. We took pictures in the jail but didn't think anything was going to come of them. I was flipping through the pictures afterwards, but I didn't pick up on anything in the rest of the pictures initially. One struck me, but I thought maybe I had dust on the camera or something. When I got home and downloaded the pictures, I saw several "orbs" in the picture in one room of the jailhouse! A friend that went with me also took pictures in the jailhouse. His pictures didn't have the orbs like mine did, but he did catch one big orb in one of his pictures. After seeing that, we were wondering if this was for real, but if it wasn't, the other pictures would have had this same dust on them too. However, they did not. Also, the guide said that people have reported having trouble with their cameras working while inside the jail. I did have a little bit of trouble during the tour. Some times I had to press really hard to get the camera to take the picture, whereas in other areas of the jailhouse I barely had to touch it and it snapped the shot. The next day when I went to use the camera, it gave me an error message. The lens wouldn't come out at all. This could be a common error with the Canon cameras, or it could be a result from the ghost tour ...

Just plain HORRIBLE...

It's sad, we were so excited for this tour, out of all that we booked ahead of time we were most looking forward to this one. What a disappointment and that is an understatement. We had more fun and were more intrigued just standing outside the building in the dark waiting on the tour guide to arrive. Once the tour started it quickly went downhill. The building is so well lit that you couldn't be scared if you wanted to, we stood outside on the grounds for half the tour listening to the history of the Jail Wagon, when we finally went inside we had a short demonstration in an empty room of a torture device from the times, then we moved to a second room where we had a short description of holding cells/cages and then we went upstairs to yet another empty room where we stood and were told a half an hour story of a woman who may or may not haunt the jail and then we were told it was over. The guide was less than enthuiastic and just quickly spealed off her script and even included a little "I know I turned that light off earlier" to try and get a response. It was so rehearsed that she spoke like she was reading from a script and at about 100 words a second. WIth a little effort Bulldog could turn this into a great tour, props, sound effects, etc. VERY VERY VERY disappointing and a complete waste of money, I wish that I would have listened to the reviews.

Amusing, but not worth the price

We should have known what we were in for when the three children under ten years of age on the tour before us came out saying, "That wasn't scary at all!". The place does look and feel a bit creepy at night, but it just wasn't the least bit scary - and this comes from a woman who gets freaked out by any horror film. We were disappointed when the tour guide told us that there are no records from the jail, so they don't have any stories about any criminals who were imprisoned there. You sort of need that for a good ghost story. Instead, she just showed us around the place and briefly locked us in a cell with the lights off. This is the type of tour that would be fun if it were free, but shelling out the cash for it is just not worth it.

This was not at all the tour we were expecting. We visited a few cells and that was it. We were told of the torture area in the basement but were not taken there. If I were a ghost, I think that is where I would be hanging out. The guide constantly reminded me of the old Medicine Wagon Hawker. You know, "Step right up, for just one thin dime, cure all your ills" type of thing. She was well educated on the goings on of the jail. It also seemed she was trying to convince everyone about how haunted the jail was by telling us about the "ghost hunters" that had visited. It is a detail I only needed to hear once but heard at least 5 times. Even though a young lady appeared to be faint or dizzy from the tour. It too seemed contrived. The parents, in my opinion, were no where near as concerned about her as I know I would have been if she were my daughter. There is no way I would not have completely stopped the tour to make them let me and her out. If fresh air is all it would take to make her feel better, you can be sure fresh air is what she would have been getting even if I had to knock a new window into the place. This is more theatrics than anything else.

The haunted jail really lives up to it's name. We got about 20 photos of orbs and had a personal experience in the jail as well. The guide was excellent and professional. And the jail is AWESOME! My only criticism is the fact that we had to meet our tour group at the jail and had to walk about 6 long blocks through some rather seedy neighborhoods. I would advise anyone taking the tour after dark to drive rather than walk to the jail. But don't let that stop you, everyone interested in the paranormal should visit the jail!
