Haunted jail tour

We had a great time, the jail was pretty creepy and Susan was our guide. She was enthusiastic and did a great job. I got one picture with an orb, very weird, and several people heard footsteps, doors closing and what sounded like people talking. One room I went in seemed to be 20 degrees cooler than the rest of the place. I highly recommend this tour and would do it again.

Haunted Jail

The Haunted Jail Tour was very interesting. The tour told you about how it was like to live there. If you are looking for scary scary things this isn't it. There is nothing scary about the Haunted Jail it just looks scary from the outside. The tour guide makes the tour scary not the Haunted Jail itself. Our tour guide would close the 900 pound door so we woould see how it was like and it was scary. But don't get your hopes up because it is mostly about the history of the jail and a little bit of stories that worn't scary. I would not recomened kids under the age of 7 because it would be scary to them but not to us. I would recomend that you go on this tour.

I went on this tour w/3 of my friends. Our tour guide was nice enough, but I felt like he was just telling facts that he had memorized - he wasn't a 'story teller' so the tour may have been better w/a more interesting tour guide. The first 10 minutes of the tour consisted of the group circling around him in front of the jail while he listed all the different tours that he does as he explained the certification process for Charleston Tour Guides. He then proceeded to pass around black & white photos of what the jail originally looked like. It was pretty ridiculous. It was a night tour, so it was dark outside and the photocopies were in plastic sheets straight out of his 3-ring binder. He held the pictures and used his flashlight on them for us to see - but between the lack of light, glare & quality of the pictures it was difficult even to see what he was trying to point out. He then proceeded around the side of the building and then to the back. Each time stopping to spout more of his 'knowledge'. After about 25 minutes we entered the jail and spent about 15 minutes inside. There are no lights inside. We were lucky that there was a man in the group who also had a flashlight which he used to help us see the steps and doorways because our guide stayed in the front of the pack - I guess the first 2 or 3 people could see where they were walking, but the rest of us were pretty blind. Overall I think it was just a waste of time. The history of the jail is very interesting - but you can read all about it (and more) on-line for free. And quite frankly, we didnt really take a night tour of a jail simply to learn of its history, we were hoping for at least a little spookiness...none to be found. Usually I'm a big scaredy-cat...Jurassic Park gave me nightmares...but this tour did not even evoke a single goose bump. Save your money.

My friends and I went to Charleston for a 3 day vacation and thought we would try the Haunted Jail Tour to add some fun and excitement to our trip. We read all the other reviews and felt this one was the best as far as the scariest. We were really pumped up about it but when we got there at 9pm and the tour started it turned out to be not very scary at all - especially if you are a non-believer in ghosts. It was rather boring and the stories were ghost stories that didn't spook even the children on the tour. Some of the jail is being preserved and they don't allow you to walk through it all. You do, however, get to take as many pictures as you would like. Maybe you will spot a ghost but we didn't. If you are looking for a spook or a lot of history, this tour is not the one for you.

Even though I work in the downtown Charleston area, it was great being able to purchase these tour tickets online and not have to run around to get to the ticket office.

Recommend the jail tour but only in the evening - it gets really hot in there.

We went to the 9:00 pm show. It was VERY scary. If you are someone that LOVES getting scared, than I would recommend this tour. If not, I would suggest you take a different one. The tour wasn't very long and incorporated a good amount of history about the jail. Definitely took a picture of a ghost on the tour, so it was fruitful in that sense. Would recommend.

Interesting Stories

I will say that our tour was a lot of fun. Our guide was enthusiastic about the jail and really put a great deal into her presentation. I had lived in Charleston for a bit and knew of the jail before it was purchased and renovations started to take place, so it was fun to go inside the jail itself. Our guide, I believe her name was Susan, was just one hell of a good time. She was very interesting and I loved the fact she personlized the stories for us. She interacted with the entire group and made the tour a great deal of fun. I would recommend this tour with the understanding you probably won't get frightened, but all in all it is interesting to hear the history and fun to experience the jail.
