Enjoyable tour, but............!?

Overall, my son and I enjoyed the jailhouse tour, but would liked to have been able to see more areas of the jail. The more areas you spend time in, the more chances to be able to encounter spirits. Also, there was a lot of clutter in the basement creating somewhat of a safety hazard in the dark. Other than that, we enjoyed the tour.

Recommend, but with a few reservations

Went on an 8pm tour with my 3 kids, ages 14, 11, 9 on Tues 4/5/09. My kids enjoyed our tour guide (forgot her name!), who made the tour interesting and fun for them. She used my son as a demonstrator for the hanging ropes, which made it especially fun for him. It wasn't too scary - just a bit - for my 9 year old. It was a bit pricey, but thought it was a unique experience for them and would make Charleston memorable. My only negative comment is that it is unnecessarily difficult to have to check in at the Market office 45 minutes prior to the start of the tour at the jail, which is 6 blocks away - and it's 6 blocks that I wouldn't want to walk because the neighorhood is questionable. I drove my car to the check-in location and left it at a parking meter - parking is very difficult around the market - then drove to the jail, which had free parking. It was pitch black - no lights in the jail - except for the tour guide's flashlight. Bring your camera and hope to get some Glowing Orbs in your photos - we did not, but others in our group did. We took some video too - of my son in the hanging ropes - so we could convey a sense of it to mom back at the hotel.

My 13-year old daughter, her friend, and myself took the tour. Suzanne was the guide, and she was great! It began storming outside just as we met at the Jail. We went into the second chamber, led by Suzanne. She had just started talking about the first woman that was hung there, when the girls and I heard a female voice whimpering. The sound was very clear; and sounded three times. A man and his wife heard it too, and turned to see where the sound was coming from at the same time as we did. No one else in the group heard it - so I know it wasn't a planted sound effect.. It was so cool! The hair on the back of my neck stood up. Two suggestions for future tour-goers: 1. Drive to the bulldog office, don't walk to it. 2. Go on the tour with a truly open mind.

Myself and 2 teens loved this tour!

Suzzane was our tour guide and she was wonderful. We got to the jail while it was still light out and looked around outside by ourselves. Once the tour started the stories were wonderful...and creepy. I am a believer in the paranormal, however my teen daughter was unsure what to believe...until the camera incident. Her camera worked great outside. As soon as we entered the jail it stopped working. If she turned it on it acted very strange and was turning on and off by itself. we ignored this and were just upset that we couldn't get pictures inside. Other members of our group took pictures and we saw the "orbs" in their pictures....then when the tour was over our guide asked if there were any strange things that happened to us while inside. Some people described feeling something, the guide asked in anyone had any problems with their cameras or phones...we told her about ours and she said it will work again once we are away from the jail...IT DID! and to top it off, when we got back to our car we were looking at the pictures on it and there were very strange pictures that we DIDN'T TAKE...we are now all believers...there is someone in the jail. We highly recommend this tour...

Our group, ranging in age from 12 to 74, thoroughly enjoyed the tour of the jail. Be aware that the neighborhood is sketchy at best. I do not advise walking from the ticket office to the tour location.

Interesting, but ...

This was a fascinating historical site. However, the tour was quite crowded with close to 30 people. This does not create favorable conditions for experiencing the paranormal. It was also a bit disappointing that we were not able to see the jail cells; we only observed 3 common rooms inside the building. I would recommend this tour to the history buff, but not so much to the paranormal enthusiast.

I like the tour guide but expected much more than the show of 3 dark rooms with construction materials. It would be also interesting if guide would tell some real stories about the prisoners, not just the chronicles of construction. So, little bit dissapointed.

The tour was great. We enjoyed the guide and felt like she was very informative. I actually felt like someone touched me in the jail. I would take this tour again
