Went on an 8pm tour with my 3 kids, ages 14, 11, 9 on Tues 4/5/09. My kids enjoyed our tour guide (forgot her name!), who made the tour interesting and fun for them. She used my son as a demonstrator for the hanging ropes, which made it especially fun for him. It wasn't too scary - just a bit - for my 9 year old. It was a bit pricey, but thought it was a unique experience for them and would make Charleston memorable. My only negative comment is that it is unnecessarily difficult to have to check in at the Market office 45 minutes prior to the start of the tour at the jail, which is 6 blocks away - and it's 6 blocks that I wouldn't want to walk because the neighorhood is questionable. I drove my car to the check-in location and left it at a parking meter - parking is very difficult around the market - then drove to the jail, which had free parking. It was pitch black - no lights in the jail - except for the tour guide's flashlight. Bring your camera and hope to get some Glowing Orbs in your photos - we did not, but others in our group did. We took some video too - of my son in the hanging ropes - so we could convey a sense of it to mom back at the hotel. |

We really enjoyed the haunted jail tour. Our tour guide, I wish I could remember her name, was awesome. She made it really fun and the sudden jumps she would make and the stories/history she gave were interesting. We are planning on going back and taking another tour, possibly through the cemetary....maybe.....yikes..... |

We took the 8:00 tour with AJ as our guide. AJ did a great job, and had just the right mix of historic info, humor and scary stories. Some of his personal experiences in the building were enough to scare all of us even if we didn't see or hear anything from the "spirits" on this tour! We didn't catch any of the orbs in any of our pictures, but another girl in our group did get some interesting shapes showing up in her pictures.
We picked this tour because it would take us inside an old building instead of just walking around town or through a graveyard. I'm glad we chose this one and I would recommend it to others. We really enjoyed it! |

My 13-year old daughter, her friend, and myself took the tour. Suzanne was the guide, and she was great! It began storming outside just as we met at the Jail. We went into the second chamber, led by Suzanne. She had just started talking about the first woman that was hung there, when the girls and I heard a female voice whimpering. The sound was very clear; and sounded three times. A man and his wife heard it too, and turned to see where the sound was coming from at the same time as we did. No one else in the group heard it - so I know it wasn't a planted sound effect.. It was so cool! The hair on the back of my neck stood up.
Two suggestions for future tour-goers: 1. Drive to the bulldog office, don't walk to it. 2. Go on the tour with a truly open mind. |

If you are looking for an experience that puts you into the middle of the action this is the tour for you. This was the second time we have been to this jail and both times we had an experience with the supernatural or something that we could not explain. The only complaint we might have is both times we toured different parts of the jail and unfortunately did not get a chance to go into the area where we had the last contact so we could compare and see if it happened again. Even if you don't have an actual contact with something supernatural you will definately be completely creeped out by just being in the dark where so much death and dispair have occured. All I can say is you must go and judge for yourself but chances are you won't leave disappointed. |

I loved the tour of the old city jail and all the stories of it's history. Truly amazing to listen to how the incarcerated were treated back then compared to how it is today. The building itself needs to be seen if you are going to Charleston, wether you decide to visit the ghosts or just walk by to see the exterior structure. Well worth the tour. |

I went with a group of 3 friends in all. Our entire tour group was 20 people. The tour guide, Suzzane, was excellent. I think she made it more scarry by the stories than being in the building itself. I was dissapointed that it seemed to end abruptly. You see two rooms in the jail on the tour, I thought you would be guided to more areas. However, the guide did say while were in the last room we could venture up the stairs on our own while she was speaking. We didn't do this, as we thought once she was finished with that room we'd go to more areas. Also, you were apparently more inclinded to have a sighting or something w/less people. I was afraid to go anywhere without the WHOLE group. Its was a bit creepy. The history surrounding it is very interesting as well. A couple did venture outside of that room and saw a shadow pass in front of them and captured a bright orb on their camera with a smiling face (words of the guide who then examined the picture). If you're into the paranormal, you should go. If not, stay FAR AWAY!! |
