Our tour guide Susan was an awesome story teller of the historical events that occured at the jail and other historical relevant information about the jail. She made the tour fun for me, my daughter and her friend that came along on our trip to Charleston!

Disappointed

We were really disappointed in the stories. An old jail opened for several years I'm sure has better stories than what we heard. And nothing about the whole tour inside the jail gave any 'Ghost' type feeling.

I went on this tour w/3 of my friends. Our tour guide was nice enough, but I felt like he was just telling facts that he had memorized - he wasn't a 'story teller' so the tour may have been better w/a more interesting tour guide. The first 10 minutes of the tour consisted of the group circling around him in front of the jail while he listed all the different tours that he does as he explained the certification process for Charleston Tour Guides. He then proceeded to pass around black & white photos of what the jail originally looked like. It was pretty ridiculous. It was a night tour, so it was dark outside and the photocopies were in plastic sheets straight out of his 3-ring binder. He held the pictures and used his flashlight on them for us to see - but between the lack of light, glare & quality of the pictures it was difficult even to see what he was trying to point out. He then proceeded around the side of the building and then to the back. Each time stopping to spout more of his 'knowledge'. After about 25 minutes we entered the jail and spent about 15 minutes inside. There are no lights inside. We were lucky that there was a man in the group who also had a flashlight which he used to help us see the steps and doorways because our guide stayed in the front of the pack - I guess the first 2 or 3 people could see where they were walking, but the rest of us were pretty blind. Overall I think it was just a waste of time. The history of the jail is very interesting - but you can read all about it (and more) on-line for free. And quite frankly, we didnt really take a night tour of a jail simply to learn of its history, we were hoping for at least a little spookiness...none to be found. Usually I'm a big scaredy-cat...Jurassic Park gave me nightmares...but this tour did not even evoke a single goose bump. Save your money.

Tour guide was great, very knowledgeable. Would have enjoyed more if we were not rushed from room to room. Felt like the goal was to get us out as soon as possible.

My daughter and I attended the event and had a really fun time. The ambiance was spooky with all the lights out and we even lucked out and had a thunderstorm on the night of the tour!

it was a good informative tour and really didnt need to walk throuigh because she was a pretty good story teller but. I thought i wouldve have been a little more spooked about walking through it especially because I didnt want to do it because of my fears but since it was my bf birthday i decided to do it with him....I think what took away from the whole tour is the fact that part of the jail is a college and students were down stairs making all kinds of noises and walking through so it made me think can this place really be haunted and students walk through it all day and night with no fears........ so if u going to try and see a ghost or some kind of paranormal activity (likemy bf) then i dont recommend it but if you are just going to see and hear a piece of history you might like it

Our tour guide I believe was Suzanne and she was wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and the history behind the jail. Being new to Charleston this was a great way to get out and see things around this city. I will be doing more tours in the future. Thanks again for a great experience.
