We come to Charleston every couple of summers or so. Each time we come we enjoy going on one of the many local tours. The ghost tours are something that my boys in particular enjoy. The last one we went on with a different tour company was fantastic. Scared the beejeezus out of us ! We couldn't wait to go on the jail house tour. My sons are 21 & 12. The youngest being scared fairly easy.
The lady who was our guide was very nice and professional, but sort of like Grandma trying to tell you a scarey story. It was interesting learning the history of the jailhouse, but the kids were all bored stiff. Even when she turned the lights out it didn't get scary. I think with the right tour guide you would have an awesome tour, but to advertise this as one of the scariest ghost tours, well that is just plain fibbing !
I had friends here at home waiting to hear about it. They will now be going on some other tour because I told them it was a waste unless they just wanted to see the inside of the old jail. Sincerely, Jenny Bell |

I usually find "haunted" tours to be quite cheesy and slightly boring. This tour was different! Our tour guide was exceptional and friendly. I found her stories to be slightly chilling and the descriptions of the conditions vivid. I would recommed this to anyone! |

I enjoyed the tour. The guide was great. The information was detailed. It didn't have any props, just the real thing. Probably the best thing was that it gave me a spooky feeling. We took two haunted tours while in Charleston. If I had to do it over, I would have just went on this one twice. |

Enjoyed the tour. Though the tour guide did a magnificent job. Can't wait until the entire jail is restored. Didn't get to see the front rooms. |

The Haunted Jail Tour was very interesting. The tour told you about how it was like to live there. If you are looking for scary scary things this isn't it. There is nothing scary about the Haunted Jail it just looks scary from the outside. The tour guide makes the tour scary not the Haunted Jail itself. Our tour guide would close the 900 pound door so we woould see how it was like and it was scary. But don't get your hopes up because it is mostly about the history of the jail and a little bit of stories that worn't scary. I would not recomened kids under the age of 7 because it would be scary to them but not to us. I would recomend that you go on this tour. |

We enjoyed our Jail House Tour! Our tour guide was great! She was very informative and interesting. I especially liked the "history" she told about the jail.

We loved the tour! Definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Charleston. Our group consisted of 2 moms and our 17 and 21 year old hard to please daughters. Our guide was great! Can't say enough good about him. He was extremely articulate, interesting and educational. His name has slipped my mind but we were on the Thursday night (July 5) 7:30 tour. Thanks so much!

I went on this tour w/3 of my friends. Our tour guide was nice enough, but I felt like he was just telling facts that he had memorized - he wasn't a 'story teller' so the tour may have been better w/a more interesting tour guide.
The first 10 minutes of the tour consisted of the group circling around him in front of the jail while he listed all the different tours that he does as he explained the certification process for Charleston Tour Guides.
He then proceeded to pass around black & white photos of what the jail originally looked like. It was pretty ridiculous. It was a night tour, so it was dark outside and the photocopies were in plastic sheets straight out of his 3-ring binder. He held the pictures and used his flashlight on them for us to see - but between the lack of light, glare & quality of the pictures it was difficult even to see what he was trying to point out.
He then proceeded around the side of the building and then to the back. Each time stopping to spout more of his 'knowledge'. After about 25 minutes we entered the jail and spent about 15 minutes inside. There are no lights inside. We were lucky that there was a man in the group who also had a flashlight which he used to help us see the steps and doorways because our guide stayed in the front of the pack - I guess the first 2 or 3 people could see where they were walking, but the rest of us were pretty blind.
Overall I think it was just a waste of time. The history of the jail is very interesting - but you can read all about it (and more) on-line for free. And quite frankly, we didnt really take a night tour of a jail simply to learn of its history, we were hoping for at least a little spookiness...none to be found. Usually I'm a big scaredy-cat...Jurassic Park gave me nightmares...but this tour did not even evoke a single goose bump.
Save your money.
