Not very scary and I scare easily!

I was very apprehensive of going on this tour because I absolutely HATE scary things. I went because my sister and dad have wanted to do this tour for years but we always forgot to make reservations before we got to Charleston. The guide was friendly and well informed but the group was so large that it was hard to hear some of the stories. The scariest parts were when the guide slammed the door or dropped his flashlight on purpose so it was pitch black in the room. It was cool for the history but you will get more history on a walking ghost tour. Worth the experience to go to a cool landmark but did not really meet my expectations.

The tour guide was very enthusiastic, which made everyone really enjoy the tour. Went into about four different rooms, didn't experience anything unusual until the last room which was where the guards were to have inhabited while working in the jail. While the tour guide was explaining the room in the pitch dark I started to hear whispering coming from a little to my left. When we finished in the room my husband snapped a couple of pictures, which later going back through the photos revealed two pairs of legs looking like uniform pants in one of the photos. Mind you everyone else had already left the room. It was clearly a photo of two spirits. Really, really enjoyed this tour.

The tour started on time and was carried out by an extremely knowledgeable young man that encouraged audience participation and interaction. Explicit information on the history of the facility was well-voiced and informative. We plan to go again before this year is out.

The tour of The Old City Jail was so much awesome. Our tour guide (don't remember his name) told several ghost stories and a lot of fun historical information about the jail. The tour guide knew how to bring excitement to the stories.4 people in our group felt something while in the Jail. Highly recommend this tour.

It was very interesting to hear the stories about the prisoners who lived and died there. It was spooky in the darkness of the jail cells. I didn't see or feel anything spooky but my son felt something touch his finger and no one was around.

Could have been better...

Well, this was the one thing I really had my heart set on doing when thinking about what to do in Charleston. My wife was a little reluctant, but she finally caved in ad we gave it a go. The structure itself is pretty eery. Other than that... it kinda went downhill. Our guide was great, he was knowledgeable, but definitely rehearsed. I felt like William Shatner was our tour guide. The jail house is a huge building, but they only let you see 3-4 rooms inside. With a place so big you would think there would be more to show you. Also, there is modern day insulation, wiring, and cheesy red lights installed everywhere. Now of course they have to do updates, but it wasn't done in a believable way. Just looks like a shell of what used to be something (right... that's the point, isn't it?). It just wasn't scary to me. I'm not trying to b some macho male persona type-A kinda guy, it plainly was not.

History is Scarier than Fiction

It's one thing to read about ghost stories, but to walk through the story and physically see how it unfolded is a completely different and incredible experience. The amount of brutality that took place both inside and outside the Jail walls was shocking. The tour guide was great, and everyone was having an awesome time. I was hoping to get a picture of a ghost roaming the halls, but maybe I'll have better luck next on my next visit!

The tour guide we had was excellent. He was knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the tour. He also spike loudly and clearly enough to be heard (which is very important). The jail was neat to be in, but the modern things left laying around (school projects, etc...) brought you back from the past and into the present. I would definitely recommend this short tour.

Ghost tour not too Ghostly

Our tour guide just gave us a history lesson. We signed up for a ghost tour, promised scary stories; what we got were facts about the building. The jail itself was very creepy and interesting. This wasn't my first time in the jail, my last tour through Bulldog Tours was much better and scarier (a few years ago.) We wouldn't recommend this tour if you're looking for a thrill.
