Kathy, our tour guide was engaging and provided much history of Charleston food in this stroll around the market square area. Worth the $, though I wish the spice store had been open after the tour, and the last stop was disappointing. The tour began with a bang and ended with a fizzle, but again, wonderful tastes and history of the region. |

This tour was a Christmas gift from my daughters. So I decided to include them as well as a colleague when I took the tour. All four of us were disappointed. We expected at each location that we would learn about the restaurant and sample some foods. At the Tea shop we were told about it and given an opportunity to purchase items, but nothing was offered to us. At the Charleston culinary shop we were introduced to cook books and given a small piece of candy. Our favorite was the first stop where we were given a sample of cheese grits. We wished all the venues had been as interesting and accommodating as that little restaurant. |

Our guide was certainly knowledgeable and familiar with the subject of the tour. We appreciated that she not only knew the different foods, she also prepared them and enjoyed them at home and her family had for generations. The walking tour was not at all strenous and the variety of locations was good. A very pleasant surprise was going to the Dixie Supply Bakery Cafe. This is a small operation beside a convenient store that I would never have gone in. However, the line was out the door with people waiting to get in. We were able to walk right in and sit at a reserved table. The food sample which was stone ground grits and sweet potato bread was wonderful! I am not a fan of grits but it is obviously because I had never had real grits. It was soon very apparent why the line was out the door. Over all, it was an enjoyable tour with a very knowledgeable and pleasant guide. |

This tour was interesting, fun, and yummy. Our guide was incredibly informative. The walk was reasonable in length and all of the eating staffs were pleasant. I liked most of the food samples and thought it was a fair sized portion. The candy shop was my favorite and also the low country. Thanks for a unique tour opportunity |

Guide very good. Bakery excellent and BBQ good. Could have gone to tea shop, cooking store and candy store on our own - no added value other than to encourage us to spend money. |

Our tour started with a visit to Dixie Supply Cafe, which was fun. The owner opened up the restaurant to make us delicious grits and sweet potato bread, which we all enjoyed. The tour guide told us about the history of Charleston food from the Indians on to the plantation owners. It was a treat! After that we walked through the Market, past some famous restaurants, into a cooking shop that had samples out, into a tea shop that had samples out, into a candy store which provided samples, and finally into Jim and Nicks Barbecue where we were served little plates of barbecue, collards, and a cheese biscuit. We had hoped to go into restaurants, but basically it was not much more than we could have done on our own. I would not recommend this particular culinary tour. |

We enjoyed our tour. Our guide was knowledgeable and we definitely saw things we would not have seen without her. If you are looking for actual food, this may not be the tour for you. You'll get a sliver of spice cake, a spoonful of grits, a piece of pecan praline, a tiny square of fudge, bites of brittle and nougat, and red beans with rice and collards. Still, it's a delightful 2 1/2 hour walk that only covers a few blocks so it's an easy stroll. In the meantime, you'll learn a lot about Charleston's culinary history. We saw the outside of some wonderful restaurants and read a lot of expensive menus. We explored a cobblestone lane and learned the difference between a SOB and a NOB, with a SNOB thrown in for good measure. You'll love the Market and having a nice cold beer (at your cost) at the end. |
