Our tour guide Dave provided some personal stories along with the history of the area since he grew up there. His narrative and all the historical facts were very enjoyable to our entire group ranging in age from 23 to 56. We would have lost out on so much of the history of Charleston if we had not taken the tour. We highly recommend it! |

All in all, the tour was OK. No matter what, our trip to Charleston was worth it. And I am planning a return trip to this wonderful place.
With respect to this particular walking tour, however, I guess I was expecting a more riveting historical narrative. Instead, I thought the guide focused on too many mundane (fluff) facts (e.g. things found in Ripley's Belive-it-Or-Not, where the cobbles in the cobblestone streets come from, 15 minutes on the statue of Washington in Washington Park, and a hundred other little details that didn't add up to anything very interesting). Left out were MORE references to Charleston's role in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the Ante(post)-bellum period and Reconstruction. More time could have been spent on the beautiful architecture and gardens of the historic section, the impact of hurricane Hugo in 1989 and Charleston's resurgence/renaissance under the mayor Joe Riley era of the 1970's and 80's. There are so many interesting things to discover about Charleston in 2.5 hours, and in that regard I feel much was left out.
I know I may sound like a history nerd, but I'm not. I learned more about Charleston in a 10 minute look at Wikipedia than in 2.5 hours of the mostly standing around (walking) tour. We only walked 1 block in the first 45 minutes of the tour! I had to laugh, so many in our tour group wore sneakers anticipating a brisk walk; we would have been better served to bring folding chairs.
If I were to do the trip over again, I might opt for a carriage tour and then spend an hour or two on my own exploring the delightful little nooks and crannies of the historic section. That would work up a nice appetite for some iced sweet tea and crab cakes at an outdoor cafe! Now that's living!
Hope this helps you! Enjoy the city, it's gorgeous. |

All in all a very pleasant 2 hours. I would have personally preferred to get to the waterfront a little bit more but that's me. 2 hours is not too long and keeps it interesting |

Our tour guide, Joanne, did an outstanding job explaining the history of Charleston. It was hot, but she was very persistent on making sure when we stopped we were always in the shade. I highly recommend this tour. |
