I had high expectations and this tour EXCEEDED those. We all know that a lot of this comes down to the tour guide, and Suzanne did a fantastic job. The jail is incredibly interesting. Lots of history and lots of spook. A young woman on our tour had a bite mark on both arms when she left the jail. That did it for me. I highly highly highly recommend this tour. I think it was the best tour I've EVER been on, and I've traveled across the world. |

We had an excellent time on the tour. Our guide, Hoon Calhoun, was very knowledgable and a great storyteller. The next time we are in Charleston we would definatly do another tour. |

This was a great way to see Charleston in the evening. Hearing about the residents of the past and seeing the dungeon was very entertaining and a nice bit of unique history. I'd definitely recommend it! |

We went out with Hoon Calhoun, who's a great story teller! I always tell everyone that ghost tours are a great way to learn the history and lore of an area, even if you don't see any ghosts. Hoon was GREAT....he took extra time out with us and told some great stories! I'd recommend his tour anytime! |

i went on the jail tour on 05/16/2009. the jail its self was worth the trip but the tour (to be nice about it ) i wouldnt go back if they paid me $18.00. i took that long trip to go through the whole jail and got to see three rooms. it needs to be on there site. only three or four rooms are open and since its half a jail tour it should be half price. |

Thought it was a very good tour. Very historical and knowledgable, however we thought that there would have been a few more local ghost stories to accompany the tour. Loved our tour guide. Kind of disappointed that we only visited two grave yards, one that was not accessible to the tour and the other was open to the public. It was a good tour but I don't feel that it lived up to it's advertisement. |

Our group had a good time. This was our first tour in Charleston. We were hoping for a something a little more scary but lots of historical information was given. Lane was our guide and did a great job. I did find it a little odd he didn't take us back where we started, but he did direct everyone how to get where they needed to go and offered to go if someone needed help. I would also recommend bug spray, mosquitos were out! |

Our guide (sorry, I don't know her name), was terrific. It wasn't at all scarry, but it was informative. She was a very good storyteller, making lots of eye contact. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it for anyone visiting Charleston. |

Our guide was alot of fun--he was very humourus and personable and the stories were very spooky. The graveyard at night was creepy, but totally cool. It was a good time and fun way to spend the evening. I would recommend this tour. |

our tour guide walked way too fast for everyone to keep up and it seemed like the majority of the tour was walking. we were only in the dungeon for 10 minutes. it was not worth the money. |

Our group of 4 was 2 boys aged 13 and two adults age 45 &40. We paid $18 pp and it was a total waste of money and time! My son had wanted to go on the ghost tours for years, and this was his birthday gift. We are very familiar with the Charleston area and visit often. Never have I been more disaapointed with anything in the city over the past 25 years! The tour guide could not get to the point, and she was quick to tell us that there was no blood an gore--which was not expected. She jokingly said "You boys may want to leave now. This is a historical based tour!" Yes we went to the dungeon of the Exchange building...She told long winded date riddled stories that lost you in the first 10 minutes of meaningless words... you kept awaiting some tale of at least the folklore that is written about in abundance in the city. Never. You walk rapidly to TWO locations and she shows you the most probable faked photo of a ghost in the graveyard. Do not waste your money. Buy a book in one of the local stores about the ghosts of Charleston, and plot your own map! The tour is complete hype and false advertising---Bulldog tours should be called bullsh*t tours instead! "Quite clearly and with that in mind" (the guide said this at least 50 times or more!) THIS IS A RIPOFF! |

The best tour I went on in Charleston

I went on two other ghost tours besides this one: Ghosts & Graveyards and Haunted Jail tour. And of all three tours, this one was the best. The tour guide was a life-long Charleston resident by the name of Braxton, I believe. He was very knowledgeable and had kind of a laid back attitude about him, which I like since a lot of tour guides seem kind of stiff and uptight. He was a great storyteller as well. The dungeon was awesome. Braxton(?) let us wander around freely for a few minutes after telling us the history and some of the paranormal experiences that people have had there.
All in all, it was a GREAT tour! |

More "carnival haunted house" than serious
|

OK, so I was jazzed about this tour after hearing from other tours that I had been on that this was the "most haunted location in Charleston" and that tenants in the surrounding houses wouldn't stay for long due to all the supernatural activity in the building. That the police were called to this location all the time because of someone seeing something going on here. I couldn't wait!
I took the 10pm tour on May 13th, 2009. My group consisted of myself, my father and my nephew who is 18 years old. The only other people who went on the tour this evening was a group of 5 screaming, squealing, giggling teenage girls so it was pretty much ruined from the get go. Not the fault of the tour company or the guide. You just have to play the hand you're dealt however disappointing that may turn out to be.
I was hoping for something more serious. A reverent tour of a haunted location where unspeakable atrocities had occurred. If any location is truly haunted, it would HAVE to be places like this. I really wanted to, and almost expected to, have some sort of paranormal experience here. But I don't blame the ghosts for staying away from all this tom-foolery. The tour guide, God love her, was very knowledgeable about the location and was one of the most WONDERFUL story tellers I have ever encountered. I fell in love immediately with her theatrical way of speaking and her voice. I could listen to her tell ghost stories for 24 hours straight without tiring. But she also was partial instigator of the aforementioned tom-foolery. She locked us in a room with the lights out and then came back in with a chain and was banging it around and after half-heartedly trying to contact spirits, threw rocks around to scare us.
The building itself is owned by a local school and I'm guessing that they basically use it for storage. There is junk everywhere. I guess that's why they conduct the tours in total darkness except for a flashlight. It does kind of take away from the mood to see a bunch of signage, paint buckets, scaffolding, drop cloths, etc, etc, etc all over the place. You only get to go in 3-4 rooms because I am suspecting the rest of the building is full of junk.
If you have some interest in the paranormal, visiting allegedly haunted locations and wouldn't mind a light-hearted, fun tour then this would be great. Because it WAS fun. It just wasn't what I expected or personally hoped for. |

Not enough graveyard for me

I was excited when I read the brochure for this tour. Getting to go into a graveyard that other tours only get to see from outside the gates? Cool! Unfortunately, during the 1 1/2 hour tour, we were only inside the graveyard for the last 15 minutes. And we viewed another one from outside the gates. And that was it as far as graveyards. Which was disappointing to me because of my love for old graveyards.
The rest of the tour consisted of stopping at various locations and hearing ghost stories that didn't really even apply to the location where we were stopped. Don't get me wrong....I love a good ghost story (I have almost 100 books with nothing but ghost stories) but I didn't like the fact that they would stop in a location that had nothing to do with the story being told. Like they would say, "This occurred in a house 2 streets over, this is the address of the house, and after the tour feel free to go take a look at it". I understand that they are strictly regulated in Charleston as far as tours go. So, I know it's not the fault of the tour guides or even the tour company. If you want tours of actual haunted locations, getting to go practically right up to the front door, go to Savannah where there are no regulations. |
