The Charleston Haunted Jail Tour

I was on a quick visit to Charleston with my college-student daughter, and we decided to take the Tour of the Old Jail. The tour began on time and presented a lot of interesting information, and we enjoyed ourselves. This tour, as well as others we have been on in Charleston, could have been improved if the college-student type delivery by the tour leader could have been more dramatic. Maybe the company needs to hire students from the drama department who can put a little more "oomph" into their story-telling. But we recommend the tour, anyway.

I went with my teenagers a group of 5 teens and me. I figured we would not see a ghost but the whole thing was boring. The teenagers lost interest in the stories. I do not fault the guide he was very nice but the kids were not interested.

I'm a person who likes a good scare. But if you're like me, you're not going to find it while on this tour. You'll hear some good tales, told some amazing facts, and see pictures of orbs - perfect if you have kids between the ages of 8 to 13 or are interested in ghosts but don't want to be frightened. I, personally, was extremely bored and left the tour before it ended.

It was our 5th time- and as good as ever. Every year the guides tell some of the same stories and some new ones- but even the same ones have a different twist. It is a "must" while in Charleston.

I was slightly skeptic about the entertainment value of this tour after reading some reviews, but my family and I had a really good time!!! The tour guide was slightly quiet and although she started off saying that she's the type of guide that tells her stories with humor, she was simply informational...not much humor involved. But this wasn't disappointing; the stories were interesting to hear and although they were not scary while we were on the tour - My 21 year old daughter, 17 year old son, and I freaked out after getting back to the hotel. Talking about all the ghost stories got us scared enough to have to sleep with the lights on!!! Overall, a very fun activity that you definfitly have to try when in Charleston!

The Ghost and Graveyard tour was fun, but there were 5 groups of 20 each on our night, so it was extermely crowded out there. Our guide was not particulary enthusiastic, but it was fun nonetheless. I would recommend this tour when there are not so many people in town.
Rating: 4 Very Interesting...more informational than spooky.
The Charleston Haunted Jail Tour

Our family enjoyed this tour. My son is 13 and my daughter is 11. The tour guide was very knowlegeable and personable. Definitely take this tour at night (we did) because the atmosphere is better and it's hot enough at night inside, I can't imagine how hot it is in the afternoon. If your kids are really squeemish, some of the information is graphic but our kids were okay with it. It was a jail and they did execute and torture people there. If you don't want to hear about that, don't take this tour. We did not see any ghosts or any orbs. :( However, it's your only chance to see inside of the jail and that alone is a pretty good reason to take the tour. We did bring a flashlight and that was handy.

This was a great historical tour of Charleston's brothels, murders, and other unsavory secrets. No worrying about what goes bump in the night, this is for those who enjoy learning about a city's dark secrets.

While we were veryinterested in the sight (Old Jail Tour) our tour guide was just not very good. She was more intent on tellling people to take pictures to "see if we have any apparations) etc, then on focusing on historic information. Also, as it was night, we needed the guide to more adequately use her flashlight to allow guests to view the rooms--the guide was not receptive to this as severl people complained and she never adjusted her style.

The Charleston Ghost and Dungeon Tour

Myself, my husband, my mom and our 11 and 5 year old all took the 9pm Sat. tour. The tour started 10 minutes late. There is quite a bit of walking - but we knew this ahead of time and wore appropriate shoes. It was very very very hot and humid out. So much so that 20 min. + talks we were given, in front of the dungeon, in the dungeon, in front of the graveyard and then again in front of another building seemed a bit long winded. We were uncomfortable standing for such a long period of time and it was difficult to cont. to pay attn. The talks/stories were very interesting and we loved our guides true southern accent and style. We were a little disappointed we did not go into more than just the dungeon, I thought we would but perhaps I read that wrong. Tip: Bring an umbrella, it started pouring towards the end and like they say, they do cont. on and of course you want to get your moneys worth. Also, I would highly recommend bug spray, did not see that tip until we got there and it was on the brosure. We all got bitten and my poor daughter who chose to sit on the concrete during the long talks was bitten very badly by fire ants. Not sure the bug spray would have helped that - so don't let the kids sit down! It was not scarry for them but they do have a high thresh hold for that sort of thing. It was fun and something I would try again.

The tour guide was corny and the information was rather boring. We saw nor felt nothing supernatural. It was a lot of money for what it was.

The Darkside of Charleston Tour (Rated R)
Sat, Aug 11, 07   8:00 PM marycharles Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Group of Friends
We started our tour with about 16 to 20 people. However, this quickly was reduced to less than 10 when our leader refused to slow the walking pace (even though he had told the group he would accommodate everyone before he started the tour). After those folks had returned to the tour office for a refund, we continued the tour. The guide was not very professional. He looked disheveled, carried an empty coffee cup and shared information randomly. He admitted that he had no set plan for the tour. I would not recommend this tour to anyone.
