Fun and Historic

It was great to be able to go into one of the graveyards and walk around at night instead of just looking thru the gate.

Good Tour

This tour was good but I thought we'd get to see more of the jail. Also, they allow cameras on this tour, which is fine but it was a HUGE distraction. When you have 15 people taking pictures one after another after another it seemed like flashes were going off every second of the tour. One little boy on our tour got sick and I think it was front all the flashes.

Less than expected, more like a hoax.

The tour was not terrible, but was less than I expected. The overall "scare" factor could have been improved had the tour guide not tried to intensionally scare you through their clapping and stomping, which made the tour seems more of a hoax. More than that, now that the jail is owned by a local college which holds classes within the jail, the interior is beginning to seems less authentic with certain rooms boarded up for class space plus random equipment like riding mowers in the basement give the sense that its all intended to be a prank. Though the tour guide felt the college would continue to allow the tour because they get a percentage of the ticket price, I feel that if "modernizing" the jail continues the less interested people will be about the whole experience, not to mention the fake scare tactics used by the tour guides.

Wanted more dirt.

I like the ghost tours much better, even though I had been told this was good tour to take. I didn't really get why it was adults only. The prostitution was really the only racey part and that was pretty mild. The guy doing our tour was very knowledgeable about Charleston and it's past. I guess I was just expecting to hear more stories who was doing who that no one knew about.

Great tour rich with spooky history

We really enjoyed the tour, it was a highlight of our trip. Susan did a great job of telling the history behind the graves and houses. She had a good storybook appeal when telling the story. Would love to go on another tour with her.

I WAS PARALYZED WITH FEAR!
Sat, Nov 1, 08   7:00 PM cjroman Female 20-29 Domestic Tourist(s) Group of Friends
Holy cow - when they say "not for easily frightened adults" THEY'RE NOT KIDDING! Honestly, the description of this tour does it NO justice - WAY CREEPIER than captured. Most of the tour is spent in dark, barely moonlight rooms, and the ambience really heightens your senses FOR A TOTAL FREAK OUT. From the moment I walked into the jail I wanted to leave, but I sucked it up silent and shaking until we were finally out. If you're looking to get spooked - THIS IS THE TOUR! I have participated in two ghost and dungeon tours and will tell you it is for sissies compared to this one! Had amazing tour guide (woman - forgot her name I was so scared!) and got pics of TONS of orbs and wierd shadows ... one of our cameras also went dead right before we went in ONLY to turn right back on as soon as the tour was over - AHHHHHH!

Awesome Tour

David our guide was totally awesome, he really got into his story telling, the kids were memorized by his stories. The kids are 8 and 15. The dungeon was awesome, my 15 year old got some awesome pictures, as did we all, lots of orbs. The story of the house and the mahogany desk and the mother up stairs and and the solider coming to see the sister after he died was cool. The dual in the alley where they fought over the women and then both men died was great. We will be back next spring for one of your other tours. Thanks for a wonderful time. We also went thru Fort Moultrie and got some great pictures there with orbs. Thanks again, the Head family

Wonderful, albeit creepy, history of old jail
Fri, Oct 31, 08   11:30 PM JaphethBPS Female 20-29 Local Group of Friends
I enjoyed this tour with 7 friends and every single person thoroughly enjoyed it. We actually did the 11:30pm tour on Halloween night, which made it even more creepy! Our tour guide was fantastic (AJ I think?)...he was both extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what he told us. What makes this tour so incredible is the history. Hearing about everything that went on in the jail was very enlightening (and revolting!). For those people who are looking for a good scare, just remember that this is not a haunted house style affair. There are no gimmicky special effects or whatnot...it is scary because it is a certified haunted building--horrible things happened in it and strange and supernatural things continue to happen it. I can tell you that every single person in my group, at some point or another, got the chills. As soon as you step foot inside the building, the air is distinctively different. Call me crazy, there is just a sense of evil about the ol' place! I would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone. I'm a local girl and I definitely intend to make this trip many more times.

This was the first time I have taken one of these haunted tours. I loved it and got some good pictures. The next time I travel I'll be looking for these types of haunted tours again!

Don't miss a Charleston ghost walk

This was my third ghost walk. Some are better than others, it mostly depends on luck of the draw as far as the guide goes. They are fun and interesting and not scary. Give it a try.

An excellent tour marred by the other participants
Fri, Oct 31, 08   10:00 PM jkucinski Female 30-39 Domestic Tourist(s) Group of Friends
I recently went on this tour on Halloween with a group of friends; the tour itself was well done. The guide, A.J., had excellent delivery, and the tour was well thought out. The jail building was intriguing. The experience was, however, someone spoiled by the other people on the tour; the constant flashes of cameras (frequently aimed right at people's faces) were blinding and downright dangerous on the stairs, one of the other tour members was hanging off of/groping the rest of us, and another was making god awful noises constantly. Banning photography in the jail itself and figuring out some sort of crowd control would make the experience much more pleasant.

We had Neale as our tour guide. He was excited about the content of the tour. He told the group he was a history buff & provided LOTS of historical information along with the expected ghost stories. Great job by Neale!

A perfect Charleston Halloween.
Fri, Oct 31, 08   10:00 PM maryglickman Female 60-69 Local Group of Friends
We took this tour as a diversion for Halloween. We did not know what to expect. And what a great turn of events it was to have a very knowledgeable, entertaining guide (a Mr. Cameron) whose tales of Charleston's ghosts and sundry customs regarding the dead and near-dead over the centuries were fascinating, instructive, historically authoritative, and full of surprise. Our group was of Charleston transplants, one of whom has lived in the Holy City for more than twenty years, and she learned new pieces of local history as well. Bravo!

Excellent story telling by tour guide
Fri, Oct 31, 08   9:30 PM leslie44 Female 30-39 Domestic Tourist(s) Group of Friends
Our tour guide was fun and a very good story teller. Went late Halloween night, saw everyone dressed up and had fun. The only problem I had was while we were at the Episcopal church on the sidewalk: a very strange man came and tried to act like he was part of our group and he lingered around us and the graveyard. He was not a part of our tour group and he made us feel very uneasy. We were standing near a graveyard, on the sidewalk on Halloween night at 11PM and it is hard to trust people these days. Other than the creepy stranger we all enjoyed it.
