Woah!

So my family has been coming to Charleston annually for many years. We've gone on several different tours, but this one was quite different than the rest. Our tour guide, Suzanne, did a wonderful job at keeping us interested. She was quite detailed about the history of the jail, which to some could be boring, but with Charleston being so rich in history, I felt it was a very important part in this tour. While on the tour, when walking down the stairs to go to the basement, we were welcome by a swift cool breeze. We weren't really sure where it was coming from since the air is quite still in the jail & so thick you could probably cut it with a knife & warm (hence the reason they sell water before entering the tour). As the very cool breeze blasted past us, my boyfriend managed to take a picture from the top of the steps directly down to the doorway to the basement. If there was a way to upload the picture, I would. There is a person, whom looks like a soldier, standing in the doorway. Even after the breeze has stopped & we were in the basement, my shirt continued to move as though the breeze was still whizzing past me, but the breeze had stopped moments before. For whatever reason, not once did any of my family (nor I) get scared. Infact, we felt quite calm & at ease throughout the tour (myself even being comfortable enough to stay behind in some of the cells as the tour walked on). This was a very interesting experience & I would recommend it to anyone with an open mind. My boyfriend (who never believes in this kind of phenomenon) walked away a little more convinced that its possible. Who woulda thunk?

Informative, but should have included more access

The tour guide was excellent, and very informative; however, I felt like the jail tour was too short in regards to how many areas of the jail in which we where granted access to. It was great for the purpose of learning the history of the jail, but the scare factor was not as impressive. Perhaps if they allowed you to view a broader area of the overall jail in general, it would have been worth the money spent.

DON'T TAKE THIS TOUR

This tour is NOT worth the $18 and the tour guide we had was a total witch! It was NOT scarey and was actually kind of hokie with some of the goofy stuff the guide did. Alot of the jail isn't even in its original form. Definitely not worth the 7 block walk to get there nor the $18! I don't recommend it.

My little sis and I enjoyed the tour. It wasn't as much historical ghost stories like we are used to on ghost tours though.... it seemed to be almost more like a s'eance. Lots of people on the tour took pictures and we definitely saw some orbs. Spooky!!

Most definitely not worth the price...

We spent 45 minutes standing in 3-4 rooms with a young lady that seemed to be doing her best to entertain us with stories of murders, hangings, etc. However, the stories were NOT entertaining nor even slightly "scary". Pretty big disappointment at $18.00 a head.

Really enjoyed the stories on this tour....the dungeon was not to scary but there was a lot of historical value to it.

Cool and Informative

I was kind of hoping for a more scary, ghost-story-telling tour, but it turned out to be very informative. While we were sight-seeing in the day time we visited some churches and graveyards, not knowing we would later visit them on the tour and learn their history . So I suggest visiting the graveyards during the day as well. If you like American history at all you will really enjoy this tour. Charleston is an amazing city rich with history and apperantly ghosts.

Fun after Dark tour

This tour was fun although not very scary. If you take this tour I recommend you take it at night. The atmosphere is creepy but the stories told on the tour are more about the history of the jail rather than any sighting or ghostly stories. If you love history & are looking for creepy atmosphere then I advise you to take this tour.

As a family with young children, this tour was wonderful. The guide told interesting stories that were not too scarey for the young children. We went at 7 so there was still daylight in the summer. Very enjoyable and not too much walking.

Great time!

What a fun thing to do in Charleston!! My husband and I went on the 9:30 Graveyard Tour and had a fabulous time! However, check the weather reports before you book your tour because the tour happens, rain or shine! If there's a chance for rain, bring rain gear and be prepared. Most of our tour was conducted in a monsoon and we were thoroughly soaked. Still had fun, though. Great way to see Charleston and hear interesting stories and history of the area. Be sure and request Houn (as in Calhoun) as your tour guide -- he was a great storyteller and answered lots of questions.

Interesting

Our tour was at 9:30pm, in the dark and the rain - a fitting setting. Our tour guide was interesting, had many gruesome tales, talked about ghost interaction experiences at the jail , but did not frighten us. I would recommend the tour to anyone who has not yet seen the jail, but do not expect a terrifying experience.

Disappointing and a bit boring....
Mon, Aug 11, 08   10:00 PM Khartwell Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Unspecified
We expected a broader range of dark tales, i.e. murder and other crimes, not a 90 minute lecture on prostitution. Our guide, Lindsey, was more interested in hearing herself talk and lingered much too long at each site. We got the point and she just continued to ramble on, trying to embellish the story with her own experiences that had very little to do with anything. The language and material were not problematic as our kids are 17, however, her style was annoying. My husband felt as if she did not present enough tales to fill up a 90 minute tour. Frankly we were all quite bored.

OK but not great
Mon, Aug 11, 08   9:30 PM julievess Female 40-49 Domestic Tourist(s) Couple on a Date
Alot of talking. Our guide was enthusiastic however. You run into other tour groups at the same time, gets a bit crowded. OK, but mostly just him talking and looking at buildings and hearing ghost stories. The end is cool, actually get to enter one graveyard.
