Teen fun with Parents. Added bonus...History!
Tue, Apr 2  8:30 PM PKenn01 Female 40-49 Domestic Tourist(s) Family With Children
My sixteen year old son and I attended the haunted jail as something different to do in the city of Charleston. We travel a lot together and always try to learn something new about the culture and history of a city and it's people. It is amazing how possible it is to blithely walk by so much history without ever really knowing it. Charleston is a town made for tours and to really experience it, you should take some. The haunted jail tour did not disappoint. We expected the usual ghost stories, but we didn't expect our guide to give us a 150 year old perspective of prison life complete with personal stories of inmates and an explanation and demonstration of torture devices. My son nor I scare easily but many in our tour group were quite scared. There is definitely a creep factor as well as just a feeling of heaviness due to the inhumane conditions of prison life. Our tour guide stated he had several ghost encounters himself at the jail and I, for one, believed him. He seemed to genuinely care about maintaining the historical importance of the jail and honoring the inmates (many innocent-take the tour and learn how treacherous life was 150 years ago). Most teens think they don't want to do a historical tour but really they have a good time in the end and are thankful they attended. You are encouraged to take photos and ask as many questions as you want. The tour guides are a wealth of knowledge. I recommend tipping them for their service if you feel they gave you a great tour.

Great time! History and haunts go hand-n-hand.

Our guide was the best. He was very knowledgable, polite and elusive, which added to the experience. Left us questioning the existence of spirits and learning a piece of undesirable history. Keep up the good work!

The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the Old City Jail and even provided examples of paranormal activity she had experienced.

Short and not creepy enough

The tour was quick and seemed very scripted. The last room we went in to, the guide turned out the lights and gave a personal story of interactions with ghosts, this was the best, not chilling part of the tour. In the end, he describes the school that now resided in the prison and it kind of tool away from tour

Lots of spooky fun

Our dungeon tour was great. Our tour guide, Braxton, told great stories that were fun, scary, and had a little bit of history. Our group had a number of younger kids so he kept the stories appropriate for their ages. The dungeon itself was more than a little creepy. It began to rain during our tour and Braxton made some changes to keep us slightly drier. The tour didn't suffer because of the changes. We'd definitely do this again.

Family tour

The tour was interesting, but it would be much more interesting if you would supply "ghost meters" during the tour. You know, they go off with paranormal activity around. We had those on our st Augustine, fl tour and it really made the tour. Those things lit up randomly and made the tour much more fun. Just a suggestion. They kept our drivers license until we turned it back in.

Wouldn't spend the money again.

Our tour guide was more interested in telling jokes than letting us see the actual building. At the end of the tour, he actually said that we couldn't go into a room (we were standing in the hallway) because he was out of time! I think if you arranged a private tour, where you spend several hours there, that would be good. But to take the guided standard tour....not really worth the money.

Not what I expected

Tour guide was not only new but sick. She had a nagging cough and frequently stopped for water while giving information. She frequently forgot dates stating dates were not important to her. I felt a more seasoned tour guide would have made the tour more interesting.

Fun walking history tour with small tastings along the way. Made us wish we had more time in Charleston. Only feedback would be more tastings but otherwise a delightful day.

I didn't enjoy the tour for the tasting. It was more of a historical tour of Charleston than a tasting tour. Would not recommend unless a history buff who would love learning the food history of Charleston without the food. The tour guide had a wealth of knowledge, I will say that. You will go to the Bakery, the tea shop which has samples anyway, and Nicks barbeque. I did learn Cook's, offers cooking classes, which I would not have found out otherwise.

This tour was my favorite thing my fiance and I did on our first trip to Charleston. You get to visit multiple unique food stores/restaurants, learn about not only the culinary influences but the historical aspects of Charleston, and the best part-you get to eat lots of good food! Our tour guide, Mary, was fantastic and made the experience that much more enjoyable. I highly recommend this tour!

Our tour guide Braxton was the best! He had a lot of great stories and anecdotes that made the tour. I wish we could have gone into more than one graveyard but other than that it was well worth it!

We were in Charleston just for the day and wanted a fun tour. The guide was very good and very informative with stories that got longer and more detailed as we walked. He even had pictures with ghost images too! It was a great way to spend time in such a lovely and historic city. I especially liked how he even had his own ghost story! There were families along and it was not at all too scary, just fun!
