I would recommend going to the 9:00 or 9:30 tour. It was very interesting and I would go on the tour again the next time we are in Charleston!

Historic tour but not a ghost tour

This was the third ghost walk I have attended in Charleston. I have also be on several other ghost walks, both in the US and in Europe. I attended this particular walk with my husband and children, ages13 and 10. Our purpose for going on the walk was to be entertained. Sure we wanted to learn a little about Charleston's history, but what I was looking for was that sort of "tingle down your spine" feeling you get when you hear a really good ghost story around a campfire. The impossible becomes quite plausible in the cobblestone alleyways of one of the United States' oldest cities. I think deep down, we want to be made to "believe". What we got was a pleasant, knowledgeable tour guide who took us from place to place, mechanically, efficiently and on schedule; all the way relating facts about Charleston's history and sprinkling in what was clearly obligatory tales about people who had died and were supposedly still lurking around. But the guide made it clear that she was buying none of it and that really disrupted my experience. The guide also commented more than once that something we were looking at would have been better to view in the daytime and I agree wholeheartedly. This was not a ghost tour. I guess in the end what I learned is that there are guides and there are storytellers. Both are knowledgeable and both can convey the exact same information to their audience. The difference is that whereas the guide simply sets forth the facts, gives an opinion and allows you to draw your own conclusion, the story teller weaves the facts into a tale that makes the audience a part of it and really sucks you in. Based on their enthusiasm, you believe the story teller believes the story and you certainly wind up believing it because you came to the tour desperate to believe. Now frankly, I may have overthought this whole thing and my intent is not to hurt anyone's feelings. But as an attorney by trade, I spend a lot of time in seminars learning how to convince juries that my position in a case is the correct one. What the seminars alway say and what I have never understood as clearly as I did last Friday night is that it is not what you say, but how you say it.

I will say that our tour was a lot of fun. Our guide was enthusiastic about the jail and really put a great deal into her presentation. I had lived in Charleston for a bit and knew of the jail before it was purchased and renovations started to take place, so it was fun to go inside the jail itself. Our guide, I believe her name was Susan, was just one hell of a good time. She was very interesting and I loved the fact she personlized the stories for us. She interacted with the entire group and made the tour a great deal of fun. I would recommend this tour with the understanding you probably won't get frightened, but all in all it is interesting to hear the history and fun to experience the jail.

haunted tour???

For a tour with the word "haunted " in its title, it sure did not live up to expectations. The tour was interesting but was more about a history lesson then anything "haunted." Yes, the tour guide did say stuff is always seen or heard but that is pretty much the extent of the "haunted." I have also been on the Ghost Walk Tour and found that much more entertaining anf really enjoyed the various ghost stories. Perhaps, a few more stories and a little less history would work better.

The tour guide was great on this one also! She was very enthusiastic and very informative about the history of Charleston and the grave sites. We will be back with our friends. The only thing we wish, is that we could of gotten to spend a little more time in the grave yard to look around at the graves, and wish we could have visited a couple of different grave yards. But all in all, it was fun. Thanks!!!

Rebel was our guide and she handled the paranormal expertly. She encouraged group participation and was an excellent guide. We had plenty of time in the graveyard and she shared with us some great stories of the 'undead'. All in all I would very much recommend this tour.

I would recommend the tour, it was fun and interesting. The tour guide knew what he was talking about. But be prepared to walk as it is a walking tour. Even for locals it is something fun to do.

I recently took the Charleston Ghost and Dungeon Tour. Our guide was excellent. She told some very interesting stories and made the tour very enjoyable. If I get a chance to return to Charleston, I'd lke to try some of the other tours they offer.

My daughter and I had a blast. We didn't see any ghosts :-( but we did get to see a beautiful 500 year old tree. Lane did a great job, was incredibly knowledgeable and just had a great presence.

It was okay. The guide was interesting and animated. The topic was prostitution only, not other "dark side" topics we expected. We could have sat in an auditorium and saved the rubber on our shoes...or gone out to a nice dinner instead.
