Teenage Girls Night Out

My girls, all 5 of them, had a blast! We have wanted to do this ghost walk for the longest and decided a 13th birstday party was an ideal time. The guide was very informative and the girls just ate up everything she had to say. I would recommend this tour for anyone!!

Unimpressed

We heard that this was the best ghost tour in town, so naturally we tried it first. While the scene of the City Jail held a great deal of potential, the presentation was very poor. The jail is undergoing constant reconstruction, as it was originally condemned, but there appears to be little effort to separate the construction from the tour path. As a result, it is VERY difficult to “see” how the Jail used to be. The tour guide was nice and somewhat informed of the history, but a VERY poor storyteller. I felt like the stories would have been appropriate for a high school class, not an adult tour. The group was small enough not to be a distraction, but the constant flash photography completely ruined the intended "scariness" of the experience. As a result, my wife and I were very unimpressed. Don't go here to be scared, it's just not set up for it. Like I said, it was a reasonably good History Walk, a really bad Ghost Tour.

Charming Stroll

Driving from Kiawah Island to the center of town was very easy, public parking was right around the corner from the meeting place and our group was small and intimate. The tour guide was great - she was knowledgeable, friendly, easy to follow. The stroll overall was full of history, fun facts, lots of opportunity for pictures, discussion, questions and ended in perfect time to enjoy lunch at a local spot. This is a must-do for those new to Charleston!

i think her name was karen or kathy, she made the tour a lot of fun; however, i think it would be a little more realistic if all the college classrooms and college supplies were contained to a couple rooms that you did not tour thru.

With the dark history of Charleston, there wasn't any information to support that here. I had a better time on the Gullah tour of Charleston in reference to dark history, black magic, folk lore, and actual depiction of reality. Interestingly enough for a city to have imported 45% of slaves into America. This tour didn't offer any information about them and their brutal treatment. Though it offered a story about the upper class whites, a mother that lost a child in birth, something very common in those days. I would not recommend it to anyone. My son was very disappointed as well.

Ghost Tour Was Good

It was interesting. I did not know there would be so much walking involved, maybe you should make that more clear. I would like to hear more ghost stories. I did like the dungeon, would have been cool to learn more about that. The tour guide was likeable and a good story teller.

This tour was nice to see the history behind the jail and part of Charlestons history. However it was a little creepy that the walls had to be braced in order for people to enter into the building, I was afraid it was going to fall in on use. We did not experience anything, however I was a little freaked out when the lady leading the tour said people had been possessed and followed from the tour.

More like a history tour than a scary ghost tour

After getting somewhat lost trying to find the location of the tour, we were very pleased our tour guide patiently awaited our arrival (only a few minutes, but non the less appreciated). Tour was informative, weather beautiful and subject information exciting. Very comfortable pace....bring water and comfy shoes!!

History was interesting

A lot of fluff about orbs was given but of course as I suspected none were seen on our tour. The history of the jail was impressive though and being able to walk back in time in this awful place really brought out the reality of what had taken place there. And for that I would recommend the tour. The art work did detract from the setting though and seemed very out of place.

Not worth the money.

The tour guide (Braxton, I think) was laid-back and funny. However, I did not feel the tour was worth the money and all the sweat. We pratically speed-walked the entire time and it was incredibly humid and uncomfortable. Since the tour is a commercial tour, guides are not allowed to take you into residential areas which is where a lot of the beautiful architecture and gardens are. If you know Charleston, you will know there is not much to look at if you are neither looking at architecture nor are along the water. The stories were entertaining enough, but not worth the price. The only real R-rated aspect of this tour was the deliberate use of curse words throughout the stories. I certainly did not feel I was "in the middle of" a murder, brothels or speakeasies. In fact, I was often "in the middle" of a parking lot, on the steps of Saks Fifth Avenue or packed into a random store's doorway. I would have rather gone on a different tour. My advice is to either check out the other tours available from Bulldog (whose service was great and whose facility was clean and air-conditioned) or just go on the boat tours and carriage rides instead.

AJ was our guide and did a great job describing in great detail how sinister the Old Jail was and still is. My daughter loved every moment of the tour. We can't wait to return and go on other tours.

Both my daughter and I had a great time wondering with our guide into some pretty creepy graveyards. Our guide was a retired teacher and was well versed in Charleston lore.
