Not spooky
Wed, Aug 12  8:00 PM mfkos1 Unspecified Unspecified Unspecified Unspecified
This was definintely not spooky. The jail isn't abandoned. It's been turned into a college campus. There are classrooms in most of the rooms and lots of debris from building projects. It would have been much more believable in an empty (abandoned) building. The surrounding neighborhood isn't safe or somewhere I would normally venture. Drive your car to the jail - don't walk!

The tour really brought to life how awful the conditions were. Our guide was great! He was a good story teller. We were four adults ranging in age from 28 to 55

Its cool history but not haunted

Ok so we went to see this. First I wouldn't walk to it, DRIVE YOUR CAR. It's not in the greatest area and it was really dark. It was really hot in there and the tour was ok. Learned a lot about it from back in the day. It was neat to see the orignal doors and areas. But yes you only go into 3 rooms because A LOT of it is under construction. I hope that one day they set it up like it once was. It is so old that they are trying to restore it so it doensn't fall down. Most of it is closed because there is an oak tree grow in one of the buildings.

Good, but not impressed

The Jail Tour is a fun thing to do with a group of friends as we did. However, the tour guide, although interesting, had very limited knowledge on specific incidences that occurred there, which would have enhanced the tour. I know these stories exist as some are on the website. Also, the jail had a great deal of construction going on from the school that was doing research there. It kind of kills the mood when you're looking at new scaffolding and materials. It was good, but definitely could have been better.

i went on the jail tour on 05/16/2009. the jail its self was worth the trip but the tour (to be nice about it ) i wouldnt go back if they paid me $18.00. i took that long trip to go through the whole jail and got to see three rooms. it needs to be on there site. only three or four rooms are open and since its half a jail tour it should be half price.

The guide seemed quite knowledgeable. However, we were not sure if he was telling everything as it had been "handed down", so to speak, or heavily embellishing. We love ghost stories...but we also love history and want our stories to be as accurate as possible. He did have great pictures sent to him by prior ghost walkers when their cameras and picture-taking divulged images of interest and those were enjoyable. We would recommend this tour to others as you can't beat a walk through Charleston at night no matter the storyteller.

Decent, but not worth the money

First off, our tour guide was great. She was fun and enthusiastic. However, 'The Dungeon' was a HUGE letdown. It is a small 30 x 30 foot brick room with fake dummies and rats all over the place. This is the 'money shot' and it fails to deliver. However, 'the filler' spots en route were more interesting than the dungeon as our guide gave us great stories. Though obviously embellished, they were interesting as they provided a small sliver of old Charleston culture. I keep hearing the Jail Tour is the one to take, but that one was all sold out. I cannot recommend this tour for someone looking for ghosts or a scare, but someone looking to pass 90 minutes on a rather easy walking tour, it may be worth your while.

Enjoyable trip

I didn't spy any ghosts on the trip, but enjoyed the stories as we walked the route. The guide was friendly and knowledgeable. Our pictures did contain orbs, which some would take as present spirits. The guide made a point to talk to individuals in the group, especially the children. Thanks for a nice trip around Charleston.

Enjoyable, Entertaining, & Educational

I am from Charleston and had good friends with their children visiting from Kansas City, Missouri. We all found our tour guide to be entertaining, pleasant, and informative. It was a great walk through some areas I had not been through myself. The children in particular enjoyed the dungeon part of the tour. I would use this tour group again to entertain out of town guests.

Good tour; go after dark

The tour guide (Ginger) was very knowledgeable about the tour and a good story teller. There was another group on the property (part of the school that actually owns the property) and they were building things and playing music which was distracting from the tour and sort of put a damper on the atmosphere. I would recommend going on a later tour (after 8:00 pm) to avoid these distractions and have the added benefit of a spooky tour after dark.

Our guide was very versed on a tremendous amount of history of Charleston. The ghost stories were astonishing and quite believable. The walk thru the cemetary was really amazing as one of the guest actually saw a large white ghost bent over one of the graves as we approached the cemetary.
