Not what you expect

Of course, no one expects to see any ghosts on this tour, but we do wanna have fun and get a little spooked. Our tour guide was way over-the-top and a bit annoying, plus she walked way too fast through the streets, often making us cross when it said not to....there were some close calls with the cars! We got to the dungeon and she talked and talked and talked...but the stories about the pirates were pretty cool. We finally went into the dungeon and it went downhill from there. It didn't seem like a dungeon, just like a really cool basement. We were treated to another long story, then we left to practically run behind the guide as she moved to the next place. By then, 3 people had already ditched the tour out of boredom. By the time we made it to the graveyard and had to face another long story, my girlfriend and I also decided to leave and we never finished the tour. I recommend going on a carriage tour instead...it's much more fun

Good for a different point of view

There is always a darkside. After hearing and reading about all of the wonderful and influential peolpe and how they helped shape the nation, it was enlightening to hear about the other people and perhaps the other faces of the famous leaders. The guide, Jim, was very imformative and knowledgable. I would have liked to see more. We hear stories about many areas of town but we did not seem to cover that much of it.

I really wish I could remember our tour guide's name... perhaps Dave? Anyway, he was great! So much enthusiasm and vigor. He seemed to really be involved with the stories he told us. I can't wait to go on the other ghost tours!

A Ghostly Disappointment
Tue, Jul 18, 06   7:00 PM homejo Female 40-49 Domestic Tourist(s) Family With Children
Although our tour guide was pleasant enough, the ghost tour of Charleston was boring and very disappointing. We were under the impression that we would actually enter buildings where ghosts were thought to be present. Boy were we wrong. Basically, the tour went like this-- we visited the so called "dungeon" filled with pirate mannequins. ( like a bad wax museum with the lights turned off) and were told some stories about pirates (None of which actually died in the dungeon-- according to our guide) Then we walked through the streets of Charleston and at a variety of street points (some bearing no significance at all-except shade) we were told a very long winded story about a ghost of Charleston) This went on for about an hour as the guide pointed to a few buildings. Some of the stories actually told of ghosts that were present at one point in time, but the guide would then mention that since the buidings were recently renovated, the ghost visitations were no longer. OK --so where's the ghosts??? Our family had watched some of the Travel Channel Ghosts of Charlestons episodes and saw the people entering buildings and walking up staircases and through homes. This doesn't happen. Don't waste your money!

Our guide was very knowledgable about the city jail and it's history. She was very engaging and kept our attention. I would have like to have had more time to enjoy the spaces and not been rushed so. I know it was b/c she was doing another tour...need to space them out more so there is time to explore the space.

Not so great!

Though we really liked our tour guide, she was lively and funny....the tour was not what we expected. Throughout our stay in Charleston we heard more ghost stories from waiters and waitresses, and our carriage tour guide than we did on the ghost tour. During the 90 minute tour, we heard 3........yes just 3 "ghost" stories. We walked briskly 8 blocks, stopped in front of the dungeon and heard a story that we would describe as tragic, not ghostly. Then we waited to go into the dungeon, and heard another ghost story that went on so long, I got bored and lost interest. Again, not ghostly.......tragic. Then we walked another 4 blocks to a church where we stood for the remainder of the tour and listened to a story that was more ghostly than the others, but again it went on forever. We had expected a tour more like this: Walk a bit, hear a short spooky story, walk a bit more, hear another short spooky story, go in the dungeon, hear some spooky dungeon stories, then walk back the same.......walk a bit.......story........walk a bit.......story. 90 minutes is a long time to "stand" for a story. Overall, I would not recommend this ghost tour. My suggestion: Take a carriage tour by the Old South Carriage company (the only company in Charleston that truly cares properly for the horses...we investigated this before booking and found it to be true upon arrival) and listen to over an hour of wonderful spooky stories and useful true history about Charleston.

Argh!

AWFUL! During the tour two couples just left. The storyteller kept changing parts of the story or had to back up because of forgotten, important information. We were "hustled" all over town to listen to nonsense. A total waste of time - not to mention money! I wouldn't do this again.

This was a great tour. The tour guide really seemed to know his stuff and did good job in presenting it. I am definitely considering taking another tour. Thank you for the good time.

The Best of Charleston

The Charleston Ghost & Graveyard Walking Tour was the highlight of my vacation! The concierge at the hotel recommended Bulldog Tours as they have “the best tour guides and exclusive access to the graveyard, Dungeon, & Old City Jail”. I was so impressed with the Ghost & Graveyard Tour that I went back the following night and took both the Haunted Jail Tour and the adult only history tour, “The Dark Side of Charleston”. Every tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. I have taken walking tours all over the world and this was one of the best. Great location as well – right by the City Market.

A bit disappointed

I wasn't too thrilled with our tour guide. However, she was knowledgeable and made the information interesting. This tour SHOULD NOT be for children under the age of 10. We went with a group of 14 that came together and I swear at least half of them were children. I anticipated this tour wasn't going to be scary and edge of your seat, which would have been great but after reading reviews online for this tour and others I found out that isn't really what ghost tours are about. I did anticipate that is would be about history and story telling. With this in mind, imagine a child under the age of 10. These kids were bored out of their minds! One child was running around with one parent or the other trying to quiet him. I was so distracted that I missed at least half of the information that was shared outside of the Dungeon. We actually almost went back to our car after the tour of the Dungeon and the tour was only half over! So again, I cannot stress enough that CHILDREN under a certain age, maybe 10, maybe older, SHOULD NOT be allowed. OR have a group with FAMILIES ONLY together.

great tour, the only thing I would change would be the clothes that the guide wears. I know it is hot so this might be a mute point. Anyway, it was a great tour. I look forward for a return visit to try the other tours.

After a VERY awful tour of Dungeons and Ghosts through BullDog, we cancelled this tour. Just didn't want to "waste" two hours of our time to be rushed all over town and NOT "see or do anything." The story tellers left a great deal to be desired.

Bathroom by the tour office scariest part
Tue, Jul 25, 06   9:30 PM Tapper1 Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Other
My daughter thought the bathroom by the Bulldog tour company office was the scariest part of the experience. Our guide just gave some tired ghost stories and a history of the area. I wish we had toured the cemetaries in the day so we could have read the tombstones. My favorite part was the sign placed by the congregation at St Philips church stating the only ghost there was the "Holy Ghost" and they invited everyone to join them for church services. Overall, it was much less than expected and we wish we had saved our money.

informative and fun

We found the tour to be informative--we liked all the history;the ghost stories were fun and we liked the viewing of the dugeon and the (St. Peters' ?) church cemetary although it would have been much better if we were permitted to go inside. Informative and fun-not really scary.(all persons in our group were over the age of 18) The tour guide- we think her name was Brett was very good. We would go again next year when we come down from Ptttsburgh.Pa. and do the jail tour and historical home tour. Thank You, The Joseph Family
