Not too scary

| Overall, we enjoyed the program -- some interesting history was provided, and it wasn't too scary for younger kids and those who were a bit nervous. On the other hand, there wasn't enough fright for those who hoped for a little more from this tour. The first story, told while sitting in the park, was a little lengthy and probably could have been trimmed -- our guide lost the kids (even the teens) with some of the financial details of the man watching his ship depart the harbor; they got a little restless during the first story. The tour lasted longer than expected, which was OK with us -- definitely got our money's worth with the extended time. Our guide was pleasant. | ||||||

| Our tour guide was Ian. I am sure he is a nice fellow, but felt like he was more of an actor than a tour guide. We saw other tours stopping at homes and looking in windows and wondered what we were missing. He is well spoken and seems to be very knowledgeable about Charleston. We were with him for about 2 hours and he told us of the man who hung himself in the window watching his boat burn, and then about the girl in the cemetary he claimed to have seen. He told us stuff about the metric system and voodoo. I have been on other ghost tours in other cities and were much more impressed by the accounts of what they told. | ||||||

| Our guide Ian was personable and very enthusiastic about the subject. Although it was late at night and he'd just finished an earlier tour, he showed a lot of energy in his presentation. We walked through the darkened streets and stopped at various points listening to each tale which included historical figures: pirates, statesmen, even ordinary people... the highlight was the Unitarian cemetary, standing among the graves under the moonlight - it was really neat listening to the story of the ghost sighting that took place at the very spot we were standing. Whether you believe in ghosts or not I think you'd find this entertaining and worth the price. This tour didn't seem to be as heavily publicized as some of the others so the group we were in was smaller, which I appreciated. The tour was based on a book which is currently (August 09) out of print, and I had to go to the internet later to get a used copy. While it's nice that they didn't try to hawk the book after the tour, it would be better if they had some copies available or a "guide to further reading" for those interested. Overall, I'd recommend this tour. | ||||||

| My fiance and I were out visiting family and saw an advertisement for the Ghosts of Charleston walking tour - we had to do it! It was very informative and our tour guide captured our attention and was well versed in the history of your beautiful city. I definitely recommend the tour - the walk was at a leisurly pace and we were given a few places to sit down while our tour guide talked. Great if you want to learn more about Charleston - cant wait to do it again! | ||||||

HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE "ghost" tour

| I am local to Charleston and was hosting a girl get together. I thought it would be fun for us to go on this tour. I was wrong! First of all, the tour started almost a half hour late because we were waiting on a few late people. It basically took up the entire night. We met 15 minutes early at 9:15 and the tour wasn't done until 11:30. Then we had to walk at least a mile back to where it started!! Second, the tour guide was AWFUL! Words can not even describe how terrible he was. He gave more of a serious history lesson rather than a fun ghost tour. He even remarked how he gets offended if we talk while he is talking! On our tour we encountered several other tours, and again, he was offended that there were other tours going on at the same time his was. He literally yelled at two other groups, which was so embarassing for all of us! The first group he asked them to keep quiet that he was trying to give a tour. They were simply passing us by and not even talking loudly. The second group was on the sidewalk and we passed them. He yelled at the other tour guide and had the nerve to shine his laser light in the guide's eyes. Needless to say, it was a horrible experience. I didn't even care so much about the money I spent on it, but was more concerned that his is the impression some of these people will always have of Charleston, SC. This is the city that is supposed to be polite, friendly, and laid back. Not the city of psycho tour guides who think they own the city and feel it necessary to ruin a perfectly good night. Save your money and go out to dinner instead!!! I wish we would have done just that. | ||||||

| We looked forward in great anticipation to our ghost tour on Saturday August 1, but knew we were in trouble when we were told to sit down and then listened for the next 20 minutes to the tour guide's credentials and some Charleston history - the history would have been fine, but it was communicated by someone who was an essayist - not a storyteller. Although we are college educated, we as parents had a challenging time translating what the tour guide was saying so that our six year old could understand some of the presentation. Heck - some of it we couldn't follow ourselves. No attempt was made to modify his presentation for the young teenagers in the group or our son. We selected this tour because it included a tour of a cemetery, but what really happened was that we stood in the same spot in the cemetery for 20 minutes and listened to the tour guide's recount of his personal encounter with a ghost there. Interesting - but we would have liked to have been able to look around a little. The tour ended right in front a Poogan's Porch - but do you think he told the charming little story about the ghost dog it's named for? Of course not - he had told me earlier in the tour - he didn't believe in dog ghosts. There were a total of four ghost stories - that's right 4 - and it took a long time for him to tell them. If you are traveling touring with kids (of any age) just on the chance you might get this tour guide - I would try another ghost tour company, Also a note - if you are one of those that gets there early as these tours recommend - don't be alarmed when they don't show up (no sandwich board, nothing to ID them) until 2 minutes before the tour is supposed to start. | ||||||

| While I'm more interested in the history and architecture of this beautiful city, we decided to try the ghost tour because a friend thought it looked cool. The tour guide was friendly and really knew the city and its history well. She was able to answer lots of questions by putting them into historical perspective. I'm not really interested in ghost stories so I'm not the best person to ask. If this is your first trip to Charleston, I'd recommend one of the history tours first. But if you've read The Ghosts of Charleston, you'll enjoy this tour. | ||||||

| We took this tour with our children ages 5 & 8. Our guide told lots of great stories that were appropriate for all ages yet "scary" enough to get the feel of a ghost tour. Arrival at the cemetary just at dusk made for great effects and wonderful pictures! (we took the 7:30 tour) We'd definitely recommend this tour to other families. | ||||||

| My husband and I took the tour with our eight year old son. I felt it was a waste of money. I had visited Charleston a number of times before but it was a first for my husband and son. The guide was not very friendly and obviously not a people person or had been doing this tour WAY too long. He seemed bored. His effort to entertain and inform us fell flat. I would NOT recommend this tour. He might have been knowledgeable but I didn't hear it. I knew more information than he gave. He didn't seem to care about his "paying customers". We had an over weight couple who had a hard time keeping up with the pace he set but he wouldn't slow up for them. My suggestion to the company would be to retire him! and hire an enthusiastic college student. | ||||||

| Our party was assigned to an alternate tour guide since the group was so large... The woman who was our guide did not hold our interest, and we actually cut out before the tour was over. I would say that my impression might have been different if we had been in the group with the other guide. | ||||||

| Your ghost tour can be any number of tours and as good as your guide decides to be. Don't judge one tour by one guide or one review, each are unique to the individuals, the actual stops, and your guide. | ||||||

| Don't get me wrong, it was a VERY informative tour. Only problem we have with the tour was that it was NOT a ghost tour!!! The tour last for 1 1/2 hours. We heard a total of 4, count them, 4 ghost stories!!!!!! Most of the tour was information about the city. My family and I have been traveling to Charleston for the past 30 years. We have gone on historical tours of the city before and this time we wanted a GHOST tour. We weren't very satisfied to have yet another history tour!!! Our tour guide knew alot about the city. He was a very good tour guide for a historical tour, the only problem we had with him, other than no ghost stories, as a guide was that he was constantly criticizing other tour companies. We did not think that was very professional. I had a friend and her husband, who are locals, also join us on the tour. They had never been on a ghost tour before. They were not happy with the amount of "ghost" stories that they heard either. My sister used to live in Charleston. She had taken a tour before with another tour company and had heard alot of interesting stories. Next year when we go, we will be taking another ghost tour with a competitive company!!! Our guide kept talking about the other tour companies using "their book". If there were so many ghost stories in the "book", why did we not hear about them????!!!!!! | ||||||

| We thought we'd get a witty, fun tour of Charleston. What we got was walking around alleys, and some ok stories, told with little enthusiasm. The one graveyard we went to was neat, but it was so dark, you really couldn't appreciate it. The guide knew his stuff, but was uninteresting. People freaking out about the Palmetto bugs was more fun than the tour. | ||||||
