See the city- and then actually go and see it!

My wife and I live near DC, but never make the time to actually see its sights. So, for our fifth anniversary, I decided to give us a little tour of the city in 40 degree weather. Brrrrr. We arrived and were treated with a disclaimer to sign, which is understandable. Our tour guides, Scott and Karen, spent a good half hour training us on the actual Segway's, which is more time than I would have liked, but understandable, considering we were a group of ten. It's just that I forgot we actually had a tour to take, we were so intently learning the operation of the Segway. We embarked on the 10:00 am tour of DC around 10:30, and saw the major sights along Pennsylvania Avenue and 15th street. Understand that you won't actually have any time to go into any of the places you see- this is just a quick taste to give you a sampling of what you might like to visit later. For 90 minutes, they did pack a good tour, but with one major disappointment- the war memorials. Apparently, Segway's are not allowed in that area (WWII memorial, Korean, Vietnam). So I'd tack another 45 minutes onto the tour and take us by foot. That's really a big loss to the tour. Otherwise, Scott and Karen are funny and knowledgeable about the city and its sights. They make small talk with everyone more than one during the trip, and will be more than happy to snap a photo, hold your Segway, or accommodate you. My wife was more than happy, and that makes me happy with Capital Segway.

Capitol Segway was a great addition to our D.C. experience. The guys were fun and informative. This should be on your to do list when you visit D.C. I would suggest doing it first to give you the lay of the land and then go back to see what you are interested in afterwards. The smaller the group, the more you can see. Definitely worth the money.

Cold, temperature and otherwise

Cheers to the tour guides, Andrew & Mario, for taking a group out on such a cold, windy day. Kudos for their sense of safety on the road, i.e. knowing where we were crossing and having a rear-rider to redirect traffic coming up behind us. They handled with aplomb one rider who had a couple of big falls -- I think they ended up cutting a few things from the end of the tour (e.g. the Willard) to get her and us (it was cold!) back sooner, and I didn't mind at all. The sites we visited were pretty diverse, and we got some good views around the Penn Quarter/Mall area. All that said, there were a few burs. One guide essentially said the safety video was dumb and not very useful because it showed riders what not to do -- however, the vast majority of it was actual instruction on safe practices. Overall, the guides' sense of humor was taxing -- self-deprecation only entertains for so long, and poking [granted, good-natured] fun at the other tour guide even less. There was no sense of enthusiasm for the wisecracks or the tour's talking points -- the most I heard was sarcasm about the Congressional staff's tunnels and train. Considering there are other operators nearby with comparable prices and routes, I suggest seeking them out.

Wonderful adventure to mark our 30th anniversary

I arranged our tour as a surprise 30th anniversary gift to my wife and we had a great time. I signed us up with the smaller group so my wife wouldn't feel intimidated by the larger group of riders, and it being a surprise I wanted her to feel safe with the tour guide being close all of the time. The small group was just right for us and made it easier to stay together as a group. The radios made the tour even better because at each stop we could ride around instead of constantly gathering around the tour guide, plus he was able to give us directions/instructions at the cross-streets even before we got to the stop. We had a great time seeing the sights of DC and even rode along a part of the Marine Corps Marathon, sharing the road with the many runners (I did feel a little guilty because they looked like they were hurting and I was cruising along). We never felt rushed, and the segways are very easy to ride once you understand the concept, and before we even noticed it my wife and I were riding them like old pros. We had lunch at the Cafe du Parc in the Willard Hotel (my wife saw it while on the tour and that's why we ate there) and finished the day by taking the Metro to Arlington National Cemetery to pay our respects and view the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns. All in all a truly memorable day, thanks Capital Segway!

My husband and I went for my birthday present, and we did an evening tour on one of the last warm nights of the fall. It was just us, another couple (from Canada, touring the area), and our guide, a recent grad of a local university. The tour was very relaxed and fun because our group and guide were happy to talk together when we stopped at various points on the tour. The tour guide was friendly and interactive but not at all obnoxious or tour-guidy. I loved seeing the mall at night and flying a round it on a Segway. They're so fun! And this was a great, relaxed company to do it with.

I had never ridden a segway, so it was fun to get the chance. We saw all the monuments and buildings much faster than if we had walked. Our guide was charismatic, knowledgeable and funny. Not the cheapest activity, but I recommend it's in your budget...

This was a fun way to spend the afternoon in D.C. We enjoyed the sites, information, and our tour guides were very helpful.
