Having lived in the city for a number of years until 1989 I was familiar with the institutions, most of the history and the itinerary. Joined the tour more for the experience of riding the Segway than for the subject matter. But the kids kept it lively and even taught me a few things. This 2 hour (plus) activity is not a breeze for old people but a whole lot of fun for those with more guts than brains.

A Total Disaster - These are NOT Safe

On July 26th, I took such a tour in Washington , DC . After about 10-15 minutes of in store training (about one minute for each member of the tour) we took off on our tour of the site from the White House - to the Capitol - the monuments, etc. After a short stop at the White House we were leaving the security area around the White House when something went wrong - not quite sure what it was – and I went flying over the handlebars of the Segway. The result - a fracture to the right side of my skull, a fractured nose, a fractured elbow and a fractured jaw. Plus I lost about two pints of blood during the process. I spent the next three days in the ER and the ICU being treated and was then sent back to our daughters home to recover. Only liquid diet for four weeks, many very painful cuts and bruises - and the end of what had been planned as a nice vacation. The point here is that these tours do NOT provide sufficient training on these hard to get used to vehicles. If I were the only one to have had such an accident, I would just chalk it off as my own stupidity. HOWEVER - the ER at George Washington University Hospital told us that they get 2-3 such accidents per WEEK. I also saw an optician while there to have him fix my sunglasses that had been badly twisted in the accident - he told us that just that past week he had two customere who had also had touring Segway accidents - one with a broken arm and one with a broken leg. I know that these Segways have been in use by mail carriers, policemen and others. I would bet a small fortune that these people receive hours of closely watched training on their use before they are cleared to ride them. It might be of interest to you to check with hospitals in other cities to see if they have had similar Segway accident rates in their cities. I do hope that you will consider taking a much closer look at these "wonderful" new machines for use by tours. Thanks for your listening - Best regards, Robert Berg Cheshire, CT

Due to emergency I was unable to take the tour

Because your fee is non refundable and I had to reschedule my return trip to LA from the NEA convention to Sunday Morning, I was not able to use the ticket. I would like some of my money back because my situation may very well have enabled you to book a last minute rider and you did not lose as much as I did. Thanks, Robert Rivers

Our group of 3 men and 3 women, ages 40 to 70, had a great time on the Segway - a fun group activity. It took ten minutes or so for each of us to get our Segway legs, after which we felt comfortable making quick turns, moving forward and stopping, getting off and on. We started at 6:30 and by 7pm it was dark and we had our flashing battery operated lights going. DC at night was spectacular - took many pictures. A plus for touring at that time was very few walking tourist. Our guide did an excellent job in both instructing us in safely operating the Segway and giving information about the various places of interest on the tour. We traveled to DC from Calif. on business, but the Segway was the highlight of our visit.

This was my second Segway experience; the first being with my wife and this time, with my adult son. We had a wonderful time and will probably do it again.

We went to college together 50 years ago, and live from Maine to Tennessee now. Five of us enjoyed 2 hours of smooth sailing around all the major sights in DC. We particularly enjoyed "racing" on Pennsylvania Ave. at 12 mph, and doing "slaloms" along a walkway lined with trees. Our leader said we were not wimpy as some half our age had been - getting tired legs, and wanting to quit. No accidents, no unexpected dismounts either! We would do it again in a heartbeat! Training was easy, practise around the fountain was perfect, and the excellent group photos taken by our guide have been sent everywhere by now.

Wonderful experience

Have, for the past decade, wanted to experience a Segway and this ride, was all we expected and more. Much of the good effect was due to the obvious fact that the group leader, and the tail, enjoyed their jobs.

We loved the Segway tour of DC. The people running Capital Segway were delightful and couldn't have been more helpful to insure a fun experience. Segway's are so much fun to ride that I wasn't sure if the tour was so fun or just riding. After our ride we recommended it to our group and another 25 people went the following 3 days.
