Capital Segway Review

I recently engaged in a Capital Segway tour and would recommend it to local residents with visiting friends/ family, tourists, local residents, and/or corporate outing. My tour was midday on a Saturday afternoon which was in retrospect was an ideal time. The streets were not as busy as a weekday and made for more open riding lanes. The tour was what you would have expected from a DC tour, mainly federal buildings and monuments. The tour guide, Will, was informative and it was evident that he knew what he was talking about and provided humorous/sarcastic insight to the various places visited. His only detracting factor was that it was clear that he does this a lot, by which I mean that he spoke at you instead of to you. Nonetheless, he did an outstanding job. At $70 the tour was by no means cheap but I believe it was worth the price. It is not to often that I use a segway and the novelty of riding one was at worth at least $50. I participated in the tour with visiting family, and we had a great time. It was something new and interesting to do with those who had been to DC before. As stated the novely alone made it worth it. My only suggestion to Capital Segway would be to offer multiple tours, one of the Mall and one more local. The Mall tour was nice but I live in Northern Virginia and work in DC. A segway tour of NW DC would have been more enjoyable, at least for me. Another alternative would be to let groups go out on their own and provide self guided tours. So long as the party puts down an appropriate deposit, it does not seem like it would be an issue. To conclude, I would recommend Capital Segway as something new and different to do with visitors or for corporate events. The staff was knowledgable but stiff and rigid. The tour of the Mall was pleasant but many people already know that the statue on top of the Capitol is Freedom and that the White House is where the president lives. A variety of tours, or self-guided ones would be a welcome alternative.

It would have taken all day walking to see as much as we did.

Segway "bikes" make up for lack luster guide

RIding the Segways was an awesome experience! Especially while taking a night tour of the Monuments. But, out of the group, two of the Segways were not operating in "perfect" order, one pulled to the right throughout the trip, making some parts of the trip a bit more of a challenge. The second basically went wacko about two-thirds of the way through the tour. Also, as much as the little red lights on the front and back of the bikes are necessary, some low cost LED flashlights shining down in front of the bikes would be an excellent addition. These types of lights are cheep and readily available for camping and bicycling. Including them onto the Segways would provide just enough light on the darkest parks of the sidewalks etc. to avoid accidents etc. Our guide was definitely energetic. But, it was also clear our tour was one of many hundred he led over the summer. He is strongly encouraged to find ways to keep each ride/tour "fresh" and not wrote. A helpful hint would be to seek out oddball information such as what is the brick enclosed fountain on Capital Hill? Is it true there is a helicopter inside the Newseum? why is the USDA's building architecture different from DOC's? Why isn't USDA next to the White House? Why is the DOC next to the White House and not the Hill? Was is NOAA under the DOC and not NASA? Why does Grant's statue at the base of the Hill face east, towards the Lincoln and Washington monument? Furthermore, we zipped by the Botanical Garden without so much as a beep about it glass green house or those odd globe sculptures set up in front of the building. I realize no guide can be perfect for everyone and it is important to say I really enjoyed the tour and hope to do it again with the next round of visitors. But, despite the overall experience, to the group (the client) it was their first (and likely last) tour so a guide should treat the group as if it was his first tour of the day, not last.

This was a work group event. The goal was to give a group of summer interns exposure to the city as their first mentor/mentee event. Everyone enjoyed the tour and it provided a different atmosphere for everyone to mingle and get to know one another.

Do not visit DC without doing this!

The DC Segway tour was the most fun I've had in DC in 2 years. In addition to learning to ride a Segway, we learned a wealth of information about the buildings we saw. The tour guides were extremely knowledgable and informative about such buildings as the White House, the Smithsonian Castle, and the Hoover FBI building. I WILL do this again in the near future.

We had a terrific time. The Segways were much easier to ride than we had anticipated. The tour guides were helpful and informative and the entire experience was great.

Great tour. We were going to go on a bike tour whilst in Washington DC until we spotted the Segway tour at Capitol Hill so we went online to find out about it and are so glad we did! We've always wanted to try a Segway so we managed to sightsee and experience a Segway at the same time. Highly highly recommended!

Fun and Easy... but safety-management concerns

We travel frequently both in the states and abroad and I noticed a couple of things about this tour I want to share. Zevre did not have good directions and there were no directions I could use on the Segway website. I was told to call when I got into DC to get local directions from the Segway tour staff... This did not work, the man was very put out and did not know the City or how to help. At the end we were in front of the store and even at that point he could not tell us where the parking garage was after I gave him our location. He said he was coming out of the store to see our car.... turns out the garage was in sight - only 100 yrds away. I finally asked to sign my release since no one at the store asked for a ticket of any kind, or took any ID or had anything to do with us except showing the safety film and how to use the equipment. Once we were on our way I did not trust the way we were "crossed" in traffic and it was a potential accident waiting to happen. The staff seemed bored and disorganized. They performed their duties by rote. We would have liked more information about the sites where the tour stopped. They would start their "talk " before the group reassembled and take off without giving any preview information. The staff shared their difficulties with the DC and Park Police in terms of where and when we are permitted by law to drive the Segway vehicles so it sounded like we were "on the edge of the law'. I would assume that the Segway tour company ensured that proper legal routes were used and that all was within the DC and Park traffic laws. The guides finished our tour early and had us ride around on an off-mall cement plaza for the last 25 minutes when we could have been at one of the sights we came to see during this time I suggest these details be cleaned up. Even with these issues the equipment is fun and we would do it again.

The Segway Tour was a birthday gift to my husband. We all (4) quickly learned to use the segway. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and experience on the segway. One word for it: FUN I would do it again, just for the fun.

The tour guides were great! Noah & Karen were able to provide information about each stop that I hadn't heard in other tours and were always willing to take pictures of us. The tour itself was also pretty cool--we got to see a lot of places & based off of the info from the guides my group was able to plan the rest of our day to hit only sights we really wanted to see instead of wandering aimlessly (and lost!) around the city. Great Job Capital Segway!

Adam was our guide and if I had not received this e-mail request I would have e-mailed anyway when we got home because it was such a memorable experience. First, Adam gave each of us terrific confidence right off and made the whole thing fun. He was very cognicant of where the shade was, sharing the city history with us, I could go on and on but he was as enjoyable as the segway experience itself which we are still talking about 4 days later. Thank you for a wonderful time! Gene & Mary Mortimer

Our guides (we called them wranglers!) took such care with all of us. The training session was professional and very helpful. Once we got out onto the streets, they shepherded us across intersections very effectively; I never once felt insecure about facing traffic. The guides presented informed anecdotes at each sight and interacted with all in the group. This is a brilliant endeavor - everyone wins. Kudos to Capital Segway!
