I joined the Chicago Food Planet tour based on the recommendations on Trip Advisor. This is a walking tour through the Bucktown/Wicker Park neighborhood in Chicago with various stops for food tasting. The tour was exceptional! Our charismatic guide, Kent, was knowledgeable about the neighborhood's history (after all, it being his neighborhood) made it worth seeing from the popular tourist spots downtown. It was interesting to see the style of houses in this quiet neighborhood and glimpse at how some Chicago-ans live. Of the six food places we visited here are my comments on each:
1. George's Hot Dog - Get a taste of a traditional chicago-style hot dog. Great way to start!
2. Hot Chocolate - By far my favorite. Homemade marshmallow and cold chocolate drink was decadent. I wanted to come back for dinner. Decor was lovely.
3. Goddess & Grocer - Organic salad was nice but nothing special, grocery store was interesting
4. Piece - Nice atmosphere brewpub with excellent thin-crust pizza. The pizza slices were a bit large and I could barely finish. The beer was amazing but glasses were small. So I wanted more beer and (little bit) less pizza.
5. Sultan's Market - Good falafel but at this point I was really full. I took it back to the hotel but it became soggy because the amount of hummus they use. Probably the low point of the tour.
6. iCREAM - Extremely interesting concept that offers you nearly unlimited combinations of flavors. I definitely wanted to come back and experiment different items. Despite being thoroughly fed, you can't have enough ice cream.
Overall I highly recommend this tour for anyone who loves food and/or want to experience something away from the bustle of the city. Please keep up the good job! |

Chicago is a food city, so it makes perfect sense to explore Chicago through its restaurants, cafes and pubs. This tour takes place in two of the up-and-coming neighborhoods of Chicago (Bucktown and Wicker Park) that have much history associated with them and which are today very well served gastronomically speaking. The pace of the tour is leisurely, but one is never bored. There is more than enough food to eat (but not too much), so you would be well advised to have a light breakfast. I came away from the tour feeling like I knew Chicago a little better. Recommended. |

I have gone on a number of food tours in different cities and this one was one of the best. Make sure not to have a big breakfast on the day of the tour because you will be stuffed to the gills when the tour is over. |

My hubby & I had a long w/e getaway without the kids & it was our first time to Chicago. We were staying in the core of downtown & likely wouldn't have explored this neighbourhood if not for the tour. We both enjoy good food & this tour gave us an opportunity to try many different types in one outing. We're also not big on 'guided' tours but the tourguide provided so much interesting info, not only about the Chicago neighbourhood which she was clearly enthusiastic about, but also about the different places we stopped. When the tour ended, we went back to a few of the shops to pick up some things we enjoyed on the tour. Next time we visit, we'll try a different neighbourhood! |

The tastings are quite varied, and a decent size -- I've been on other food tours where you barely get a taste, but on this one you got a full hot dog, slice of pizza, etc. The architecture section of the tour was also very interesting. The tour guide was a little too perky for my taste, not very genuine, not a very good storyteller. Also, there was a group of women on the tour who seemed to just want to talk to themselves, and the guide wasn't very good at dealing with them (they were slowing down the tour, and talking while she was talking). It made it a little uncomfortable for the rest of us. That said, I would definitely recommend this tour to others. |

This was the second food tour that we have taken and once again, we were thoroughly impressed. This is a great way to see parts of Chicago that you might not consider; not your typical "touristy" activity. There is a good mix of history, architectural points and of course, food. For those who wonder, you will be full at the end of the tour! (Actually you will be full after the hotdog at Georges! ) Our favourite stop was Hot Chocolate, a very pleasant surprise. We have found with having taken the North Town tour, that we have some favourite places to return to, and the same with this tour. Can't wait to visit Chicago again and return to some of these restaurants! Carrie was an excellent guide, who had some great tips and lots of information - thanks for making the day enjoyable! |
