Since we are locals we have tried some of the items (i.e. Chicago-style hot dog and Piece Pizza) however we never tried the style of Pizza that we received from Piece) An iced hot chocolate with a homemade marshmallow from Hot Chocolate --excellent--a Kale salad from Goddess and Grocer (which was way better than I expected). The true highlight is iCream--the sample is called "The Guy from Florida" (which is cream soda, Nutella, and white chocolate) I was lukewarm to the flavor until I tried it. It might just be the best ice cream I ever had. The mini architecture tour was a nice supplement mid-way through the tour especially because I thought I was too full to try anything else. But by the time we arrived at the destination after the houses, I was ready to eat again. The tour also pointed out places that we might like to try later--a place voted Best Bloody Mary, Most popular bar, a hidden club, and a really cool taco stand/patio called Big Star. I could have passed on the falafel but I'm not a big fan of middle eastern cuisine.
All in all, it was a great day, our guide Heather was great and the tour was well run. It would be nice if they offered 2 Wicker Park/Bucktown tours and hit different places. I wouldn't mind trying some of the other places. They start tour every half hour and they all looked really booked. |

The food was adequate. The walk through the neighborhoods on the way to the various stops was excellent. we saw a part of Chicago we would never have seen. Fantastic architecture and introduction to city living. |

Three of my sisters and I attended this walk on Friday, May 17th. We had an awesome time. The tour was very informative both about the food but also along the neighborhoods where we walked. The buildings and flowers were absolutely beautiful which was a nice surprise since we didn't know what to expect. We really didn't have a favorite spot we visited since they were all a different experience. |

Heather, our enthusatic and knowledgeable guide, took us out for a stroll on a nice warm spring day (90*). We got a nice tour of the Bucktown/Wicker Park neighborhoods and had a chance to taste some very nice treats. We also learned a little history of the area and were able to see some of the different architectural styles in the area. This is a nice way to discover other parts of Chicago besides the downtown area. This tour is highly recommended and if you can, try to have Heather as your guide. She was awesome....here's to you Mom!! |

This was our 4th or 5th food tour with Chicago Food Planet and we chose to go again because we have always enjoyed the tours we've done. We were not disappointed with this one! Bucktown/Wicker Park has so much fascinating history and great food, too. Two of the spots, George's Hotdogs and The Sultan's Market, were the primary reasons we re-visited this tour. They have unique foods and they are great places to patronize because they are family owned and have been part of their community for years. That said, the other places on the tour were no slouches and we thoroughly enjoyed all of the tastings. We have had great tour guides and Kent did a super job for us on this tour, with his humor and knowledge of the area and enthusiasm for all things Bucktown and Wicker Park. We have seen Michigan Avenue and it does have a lot going for it--but you see a whole different side of Chicago when you take a neighborhood food tour. Chicago Food Planet does a super job of introducing you to places you may not know about, or giving you 'the rest of the story' on places you know. I recommend this tour to tourists and Chicago natives alike, and feel anyone would have a great time eating and learning about these interesting neighborhoods. |

Our tour consisted of 12 people on a short and easy walk along quaint areas of N. State and Wells Sts. We stopped at seven locations that were all very different and very fun, as well as educational. For instance, how to make tea and why tea is good for you; why working with whole ground pepper is so much more flavorful (we actually had a mini-lecture from the owner, who might just work evenings at Second City); making your own oil and vinegar concoction from nearly limitless types of oils and balsamic vinegars. We ate well, yes, but I don't think anyone felt over fed. The food selections were very fun; Chicago deep dish pizza, sushi, chocolate, and a little pastry. But what really made the tour so much fun was Alia. Alia was exceptional (not to mention a doll). She just exudes charm, is extremely poised, very knowledgeable, and spoke clearly and very audibly. This tour, with Alia, is a must. |

This tour was so much fun. Heather, our guide, was delightfully entertaining, personable, and informative. The food was delicious and varied. We learned so much about the area as well as tea, olive oils, balsamic vinegars, spices, etc. We walked, we ate, we laughed, we learned. I would highly recommend this tour! |

The tour started off with a bang with a slice of deep dish pizza at Lou Malnatti's and our tour guide Kent was very informative about the history and upbringing of the restaurant and the popularity of pizza in Chicago. Great way to start the tour!
The TeaGschwendner stop was very informative on anything that has to do with tea and I truly learned a lot from this stop! Would definitely keep this on the tour!
Kamehachi was a great restaurant to be at, although I was hoping that since we talked about the 3 types (Nigiri, Maki, and Sashimi) we'd be trying all 3 types as well. We were only served the Maki sushi. May need some improving on this end.
The Fudge Pot was my favorite spot because not only do I have a sweet tooth, the chocolate sampled was great in flavor and we were told they make it in-house! Would keep this one on the tour as well!
Old Town Oil was very interesting and I'd keep it on the tour as well just from how unique of a store it was. I had no clue there were this many types of oil and vinegar, let alone enough for so many combinations to pair between each other!
The Spice House was a great stop, but the demonstration was too much of a history lesson from the owner. Although he did a great job of explaining the history of spices, we didn't really taste much of anything other than dab them on our hands and lick. We thought there'd be a more food-involved experience like meats and/or pastries to really highlight how much of a difference a spice can change a piece of food. This portion may need some improving.
Our last stop, Delightful Pastries, was a nice stop to end the trip. We had some polish food and macaroons and were told of how prevalent the Polish community was here in Chicago, which I didn't know! I'd definitely keep this on the tour as well.
The tour overall was great for me and my girlfriend especially as first-time travelers to Chicago. We know that food tours aren't necessarily created to get you unbreathably full, but we thought we'd have a little more food than we experienced. Other than that, we'd recommend this tour just on the combination of food history and surrounding history of the Gold Coast area. Very bang for the buck if I may say! |

Our guide was Jess. She was a delight and very well informed about the businesses and neighberhood we toured. The only business we didn't care for was the Fudge Pot. One employee was eating the nuts used for the candies, using his gloved hand to scoop them off the tray and eating them. Also, the three employees there were not at all friendly to our group.
We hope to take another tour in the fall. |
