Great for teens interested in Foods
Wed, Jul 9, 08   11:30 AM HollyVHV Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Other
The teen group I took on this tour really enjoyed it! They are representatives from a teen board who present food clinics and workshops to younger children in southwestern Ohio as part of 4H. They will have plenty of great info to use in future workshops. The reviews we read prior stated there was too much chocolate included on the tour. Their response to that was "there is no such thing as too much chocolate!" Actually only 2 of the 8 stops dealt with chocolate and both were very different experiences. The only suggestion I might make is to have something available at the spice shop to eat (maybe something with the cinnamon on it, perhaps from an establishment in Chicago that uses the spices from The Spice House). I will certainly recommend this trip to other Family and Consumer Science teachers as they plan trips to Chicago. Maybe advertise to 4H groups involved in food programs and on talk radio in local markets. I would think someone like Marilyn Harris would really enjoy the tour and mention it on her radio show. A lot of great info and food was included in a short time. Thanks for the experience!

Good variety of stores! Very informative - good tour guide! On a hot day it's a long walk. Luckily we had a cool day with low humidity! I would recommend it to anyone. Eat breakfast first but by the time the tour ends you'll be full!!!

Must do!

I wasn't sure what to expect because this was my first walking tour. I was a little nervous because I planned this for my boyfriend and me and wanted it to turn out well. This was a great tour for many reasons. First of all, the obvious - the food! Food tasting was my primary reason for booking the tour. The places we were taken to were places I would not have sought after on my own. In fact, the walking tour was done on the tail end of our visit to Chicago and we found we were near many of the places we already visited, but had not known to stop at the fabulous tour shops. These shops were great and added much to the entire trip! There was so much more that I enjoyed. The architecture and history was a bonus. While on our way to the next tasting, we'd hear stories about houses and buildings. The route we were on was selected not only for the food shops, but for what we'd see along the way. Gotta love it! And our tour guide was amazing. She was friendly, informed, warm and interesting. It was nice getting to know the other people in the group and my boyfriend and I had a great time. This is a must do!!

It is a really MUST thing to do if you are interested in food, culture and history. Although the walk is a little bit long, the experience is really memorable~

A bit too much walking for 60 plus years

I wish I had known that there was alot of walking and not much tasting. As a Senior citizen it was at times difficult to do that much walking. The history of the areas we walked through was interesting and our tour guide made it more alive. Price a bit high for all of the walking and less tasting that was done. Wish there had been more time to make a purchase or 2 at some of the shops. I never had time to get back to them nor the ability to walk back.

Very interesting & cool, but falsely advertised

I really enjoyed this tour. I learned a lot about the history of Chicago. The advertising (the name and pictures on the brochure) led my group and I to believe that this was an actual eating tour--like different foods that Chicago is famous for, not spices, oils, and tea--even though it ended up being really cool. In the future, I think that they should advertise the stops that are on the food tour and a more accurate description.

I really enjoyed this tour. They give you some history and architecture on the tour. Everything I sampled was excellent. However, you will not be given any time to buy items at the shops where you stop. I believe that was the only drawback. I understand the time constraint, but I would have been happy extending the tour by an hour or two so I could buy some items. Be prepared to walk!

Everyone must do this their first day in Chicago!!

Our guide was Nikki. She was wonderful. The tour took us through several neighborhoods that we visited again and again while we were in town. The stops were also very unique. You would never visit them on your own. The oil and spice shop were really off the beaten path, but I'm so happy I was introduced to them. I see a long relationship between me and the oil shop. But I loved all of the places. The information that was given to us on the tour was also excellent. I know so much more about Chicago now. I even bought the book "The Devil in the White City" about the World Fair because it was mentioned on the tour. Ending at Ethel's chocolate shop was a perfect end to the tour. My friend and I went back every day. The map and coupons were something we used the rest of the trip. I do wish the map was a little more detailed, but we worked it out. I'm looking forward to future taste tours offered by Chicago Food Planets in other neighborhoods until I have eaten everywhere in Chicago.

this was a great tour! All the tour stops were interesting & educational. The store-keepers were welcoming and friendly. My sons, 11 and 16 enjoyed the tour and even ate pizza with spinach (these are hard-core pepperoni lovers!) with absolutely no complaints, I think they actually liked it! We went on this tour at the end of our Chicago visit, now I wish we'd had more time in Chicago to visit some of the interesting places we passed by on the tour.

A great way to explore Chicago's neighborhoods

If you are like me, and normally do not enjoy tours, I highly recommend this one. The groups are small and the tour guides are personable and engaging. Walking around, I did not feel like a tourist, only a local walking with a group of friends. All the samples offered were fantastic. Make sure you bring an empty stomach, the portion sizes are huge and a great value for what you pay.

I wish we would have went on the first day in town because we didn't get a chance to go back to all the shops and cool places we passed along the way. We did our tour on the last day and we had a plane to catch. It was really fun and a great way to see neighborhoods that are not tourist traps. The food was great and the local merchants were pleasant and willingly to share their crafts. I highly recommend doing this tour.

Not your ordinary tour

Nice variety of food tasting interspersed with local and historical insights. The spice store was unusual and informative, as was the oil and vinegar store. Bacino's pizza was exceptional. A nice introduction to neighborhoods and businesses.

This tour was a fabulous experience. I learned things I didn't know about some of the foods and I am a real foodie. The food was interesting, but the real highlight was the information shared along the way regarding the neighborhoods and history and architecture. Our guide was so friendly and enthusiastic, which made the entire experience so much fun. The walk is definitely long so wear comfortable shoes, but it is well worth it! We told our daughter who lives in Chicago that she needs to do this tour soon - it is a great way to introduce oneself to the various neighborhoods. Thanks for a great time!
