Tastings hit and miss, great tour for locals

A few of the stops were fantastic, while others seemed like a total waste of time. I liked the stops that had an educational component, either a demonstration or some interactive element. Overall, though, the tour was a lot of fun, very informative about the history of the area. Not what I expected at all. We went on the hottest day of the year, but it was tolerable since we made so many stops inside. I think locals will enjoy this tour even more than visitors, especially since they can come back and shop at these places. Visitors would probably prefer some more things that they would not try otherwise.

LOVED IT

My husband and I loved this tour, so much so, that we can't wait to take the Bucktown Tour next. Not only was it very informative and tasty, but we met very interesting people in our group. Our guide, Caroline was wonderful and very 'perky'. Even though the weather was HOT, she kept things lively. I would highly recomment this tour to anyone, even if you've lived in the area for awhile. We learned so many things about the neighborhood that we hadn't known before and now we have new places to eat the next time we're in Chicago!

Well organized, fun, unique and a great guide

I thoroughly enjoyed the walking tour and highly recommend it. I took my 17 year old and his girlfriend, they enjoyed it too but not as much as I did. Our guide was excellent! very knowledgeable, enthusiastic but not overly so and made it a great experience. The "locally owned" unique shops were a real plus. The history/architecture of the neighborhoods was interesting. I will do this again in another city!

This was my 2nd time on the Bucktown/Wicker Park tour and my 3rd walking tour with this company. I live in Chicago and look forward to having visitors so I can take them on these tours!! I find the 3 hour tour well worth the money and it is a great way to show out-of-towners some of Chicago's great neighborhoods. This tour has something for everybody (Chicago-style hotdogs, the most delicous chocolate beverage, amazing architecture, etc etc etc). Our tour guide was super enthusiastic and fun. Do yourself a favor and go!

Fantastic way to experience Chicago

I have already highly recommended this tour to a number of people who will soon be visiting Chicago. Our tour guide, Caroline, was excellent, informed, friendly, and enthusiastic. I loved visiting the local stores owned by 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation families. It was a great combination of culinary experiences. The next time I am in Chicago, I look forward to trying the other walking tours you have to offer. One suggestion - would love to see a food and wine pairing tasting tour - that would be much fun!

My friend and I enjoyed this tour very much. Ben, the tour guide, was very friendly and attentive. I did not expect there were so many things to sample! The chocolate drink from "Hot Chocolate" was super delicious! My friend and I were sooo full by the end of the tour. We really had a nice time. Thanks Ben!

Our guide Caroline was great!

I think it was a very good tour but I would take off the Catering place off the tour I along with others in the group thought that was a waste of time to go there. I also thought that people in the group would have like to spend a little more time in the spice store instead of outside. The demo by our guide about cinnamon was also a waste of time and way too long with 90 degree temperatures. The pizza place was too far for some to walk and it wasn't worth it when we got there, it was just okay pizza. I thought the place was dirty and had terrible service. I can't believe that the pizza ovens and the counter where they make them are right by the door with no protection!!! Can't believe that is not a Health dept. violation... I also think that you should put more places to eat at on the tour. Perhaps swap out the catering place with Adobo grill or the Irish Pub in Old Town.

New Experiences I Would Not Have Discovered :)

Great experience from start to end. I would have never thought to participate in a tasting at a spice or oil shop--both were amazing experiences. Even better, both shops have online access as well. Too often I do not buy interesting products online because you never know what quality you will find in food products. It was wonderful to actually see, sample, and experience the products and see first-hand how they run their businesses. I will be an online customer for years to come for the tea, chocolate, spices, and olive oil. Great group experience with a very nice tour guide. Don't expect to eat or drink a lot--just participate in some great samples with a slice of amazing pizza at the end. I would recommend this experience to anyone who likes walking and interesting new experiences. One of the best things I have ever done during all of my Chicago visits combined.

since we walked through an area, which is not in direct focus of tourists, I would suggest to put more emphasis on explaining the very interesting houses and the area

Fun, informative, better than doing touristy thing
Sat, Aug 8  11:30 AM kpliego Female 20-29 International Tourist(s) Individual
The perfect combination of history, architecture and FOOD! I wish they had had more exotic foods available. I was not too crazy about eating at the grocery store. But the persian, i-cream and the not so famous thin pizza were a treat. We went back to the chocolate place for breakfast and that was better than I expected. A lot of the places were small and crowded so it was a little bit of a struggle. The tour guide was good he had to warm up first but then he was great. Chicago tends to get hot and sometimes rainy so that is something you really need to take into account when taking this tour as in involves a lot of walking; comfortable shoes and clothes a must. We took these tours at the beginning of our stay and then did the touristy thing, definitely not worth to do the latter, too crowded and not as fun as eating with a group of fun people who love to eat. I recommend this to anybody who likes to know a city on a non-typical way.

Fantastic

We went on the "Near North" tour last summer and enjoyed it very much. When we realized we would be back in Chicago this summer it was the very first thing we booked. Unfortunately, I had a stomach virus on our scheduled date and the manager was kind enough to switch us to another date. We were so appreciative. This was really one of the highlights of our trip. We do enjoy the food, but love learning the history of an area we know nothing about. Also, the architecture aspects are so interesting. The food of course was unique and delicious. We felt this tour offered more food which was delicious but we enjoyed the "specialty" shops of the Near North just as well. I wish we had these tours in my neighborhood. Shane should really franchise this idea out, it is fantastic and everyone on our tour seemed to love it. Kudos to Shane and Kent our guide.
