Girls' Weekend Away
Sat, Oct 3  11:00 AM TrudyWright Female 70+ Combination Family With Children
Every year my five daughters and I do a "girls weekend away." We did one in Chicago last year and took in a lot of fun places and restaurants. This was a weekend away for me with just my youngest daughter (30 yrs. old) and I. We wanted to do something fun other than the usual shopping and things we had done before. I found out about this activity by searching online for "things to do in Chicago." We love trying new things and love to eat at unusual places. One of my grandsons is an architect in New York and we loved seeing homes and other buildings designed by one of his favorite architects - Frank Lloyd Wright., along with all the other interesting homes and buildings. This was everything we had hoped for and we can't wait to go back to spend time in Old Town again. The young woman who led the tour was very knowledgable and fun. We enjoyed her very much!

Wonderful way to spend three hours in Chicago!!

I would highly recommend this tour to anyone going to Chicago for a few days. Our tour guide was very knowledgable and we had a lot of fun. The food was all good and we would have never tried these places had we not known about them. We went back and visited three of them later in our stay and were very pleased with the food again. The three hours went by very quickly! You will NOT need to eat anything before hand.

Great way to spend an afternoon

The Bucktown/Wicker Park walking food tour was great. Lots of food to taste-great variety. Our tour guide was delightful. Walking through the neighborhoods was a treat. Even though the weather was cold and dreary, our tour was fabulous and a great way to spend an afternoon --don't let the weather stop you. Last year we did the north food walking tour and we enjoyed that one so much that we decided to do this one. Well worth it !!!!

We all enjoyed this walking tour so much. It was a great walk with interesting stops along the way. We enjoyed Old Town Oil so much -it was a surprise to all of us. Also The Spice House. We would have never stopped at either of these places on our own but they were Oh so interesting. Of course all the Chocolate was ummmm. We would highly recommend this tour. Our guide was great-very knowledgeable about all areas we walked through... A good time was had by all.

I went with my mom and my sister and it was so much fun. Unfortunately it rained a bit on that day but our guide made it bearable. The Fudge Pot was the best stop!

Good...but

Memorial Weekend 2006 - Good tour...be sure to wear excellent walking shoes, as I wore flip flops and my feet were a little sore at the end. Though the food was good and the guide (Shane) very knowledgable, it was more of a walking tour than food tasting. I would give it an excellent rating if they add one more establishment to the food tasting portion (and not tea, sweets or breads). We tasted a Jewish fried potato cake, ice tea, chocolate, bread, thin crust veggie pizza and more chocolate. Though because of the walking (a little over 3 miles in 90 heat for 3 hours), I was pretty much too tired to think about food.

Will do again!

Fun! You WILL need your best walking shoes. Tourist? Do this at the beginning of your visit to Chicago and you will have a much better idea of what you will want to eat/do while there. I should have taken small umbrella or rain jacket. Zerve was the easy way to get tickets. Thank you!

GREAT Time for your buck!

ABSOLUTELY a wonderful tour and tasting! Our guide Emily was knowledgeable and informative. In our opinion the best 3 shops are at the front of the tour - but don’t bail out - the rest is lovely, too. A nice touch is the discount shop coupons that you can use online b/c you aren’t allowed to shop along the way. (This actually makes great sense as 15 people shopping in each of the 8 stores would never get you down the street.) Each shop has something wonderful and the shop-keeps themselves gave us so much GREAT information...fun to interact with THEM as most tours ‘take you by’ but don’t really ‘take you inside’...the tasting was just the right size. The weather was amazing for early October -- NO COATS needed! So we walked back to the beginning of the tour and visited our favorite shops to purchase - Tea, Spices, Oil - all real treasures! How lucky for those who live nearby!!! Definitely would take another tour from Planet Food, it was fun and rather unique! Go for it!

Wonderful way to taste and touch the city

Great food and interesting selections. A nice mix of specialty and "main stream" stores. Who would have thought you could have so much fun learning about olive oil and vinegar! The spice shop is a MUST see and smell. I plan on ordering from them going forward! Thanks for such a wonderful afternoon!!!

Enjoyable way to see more of Chicago

My friend and I rode the Mega Bus to Chicago. We are both foodies. We love to cook and go to cooking classes. So this seemed like a good fit for us. We loved all of it. We also are walkers, hikers, etc. There is alot of walking, but if you are used to this it shouldn't be a problem. We went to some very different places. The "Spice Merchant" being one. Awsome! Seeing other neighborhoods that I normally would not have known about, restaurants that I would have missed and beautiful buildings are just a few other good things about this tour. And before I forget, the guide, Jennifer was plesant, and knowlegable.

Venues visited interesting with plenty of samples

The meeting point was convenitent but the tour leader (also a fitness instructor) conducted the tour at such a brisk walking pace it felt like being route marched through the city, although the day was cold her desire to sprint through the streets meant the group sturggled, indeed two people left the tour such was the frantic pace. The stops were however unhurried and interesting although as shopping on the tour is not allowed it meant that if one wanted to make a purchase it had to be on a return visit or online. The leader seemed oblivous to the needs of the individiuals inthe group although her commentary was interesting. It would be better to either plan the tour aournd shops closer to each other (at one point it was over a twenty minute walk to the next stop) or have fewer stops so the walking pace is not so frantic. I have taken a similar but much better tour in San Francisco wear at some points the group joined the hop on hop off bus tour which was much more enjoyable. Only one for the very fit .

Great Fun with Exposure to Some Hidden Gems

I thought the tour was fantastic and the tour guide, Nikki (?), was quite lovely, super friendly, and very informative. There were lots of interesting tidbits on history and architecture, as well as the food. The tour stops at a few shops that you may not notice otherwise and they are a wonderful revelation. The only sour note for us was the atrocious level of service by the bartender / wait staff at the last stop, Bacino's. Our tour guide informed us of a "customer appreciation" deal being offered by Bacino's for a 3 flight tasting of some of the micro-brewed beers they serve after the tour ended. My friend and I eagerly awaited the tasting at the bar for at least 20 minutes with no service before walking out! This despite being seen by at least one waiter / bartender and mentioning to him that we wanted to do the tasting. Plus, there was only one table of people in the entire restaurant! This left a bit of a sour taste in our mouths, but it really had nothing to do with the tour. In short, the tour was great and well worth the money, but Bacino's service was awful. This is unfortunate, because the pizza was tasty.

The Food Walking Tour was well thought out and well managed. Our guide was friendly, informal and knowledgeable. We enjoyed being introduced to a variety of specialty stores and shops, as well as being acquainted with some of Chicago's lesser known landmarks. We would recommend the tour to others and would go on the tour again.

I thought the tour was a great balance of great food (based on the web description, I was afraid I might not be full but, pleasantly, that was not the case), a little exercise (via walking through the neighborhoods), and interesting information (on both the restaurants we sampled at, the one's we just passed along the way, and the neighborhoods we were in).
