Cheese, Chocolate, and a Sprinkling of Trivia
Center City Food Lovers Adventure in Philly
Thu, Jul 31, 08   10:00 AM RebeccaJ Female 60-69 Local Group of Friends
The Center City Food Lovers Tour was fantastic. The samplings were delicious and generous. The descriptions of the various foods were interesting, as well as informative. Robert, our tour guide, made the event even better by periodically rewarding us with treats for correctly answering related trivia. My group has been on several food tours and thought this was one of the best. We are looking forward to doing another.

Unique way to tour New York!

We all enjoyed our visit to various restaurants and business establishments. The tour included a variety of cultural experiences. We enjoyed every place we visited. Rebecca did a great job giving us background on each establishment and we were even able to hear from several of the owners. The one area for improvement would be providing a better balance of foods so that there are not so many dessert items. Rebecca also did a great job included the three teenagers we had in our group. We would definitely recommend the tour to our friends. As a matter of fact, we had friends who recommended it to us.

Wonderful weekend activity with my parents

My parents were visiting from Wisconsin and are always looking for new exciting ways to spend their time in NYC. This was perfect. It was a small group. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and for me (as a local) it was a fun, and my parents loved it. It was a little sneak peak into places that I will definitely visit again. All of the restaurants were happy to see us. Which reminded me of how connected to the community a small company can be. Oh, and wonderful food too!!!

It's all about the food

Short and sweet: the tour was fun and I would recommend it. Now for the details... My wife and I were visiting New York for the weekend. Two young ladies who live in the neighborhood joined our group. This was definitely a good size group. Any larger would have inhibited our ability to hear the discussion and to fit in the small shops we visited. Our tour guide, Nicole, was fun and interesting. She was respectful of our time, but didn't rush us. The tour didn't take us all that far from the starting point. It is easily walked by anyone of any age. I would have liked to go further and see more. The highlights of the tour for me were the donuts and the coffee. The Donut Factory makes really interesting donuts - flavors I've never had before - and the freshness really makes a difference. The Roasting Plant Coffee Company was fascinating for me more for the technology than for the coffee, although the coffee was very good. There were some disappointments for me, however. We took the tour on Saturday and, of course, all the Jewish shops were closed. The Jewish influence is a big part of the lower East Side and skipping it made the tour seem incomplete. That is no one's fault. But, the tour could have been more in-depth and better coordinated. It seemed at some stops that the people behind the counter didn't know our tour was coming or, if they did, didn't care. I took a walking/eating tour of Federal Hill in Providence and it was much better because there was a greater variety of food, we felt more welcomed by the proprietors, and we got more food to eat. For me, it's all about the food...

A Delicious Discovery of the Upper West Side

I am a chef at a nearby restaurant and took the tour to get to know the neighborhood a bit better. The UWS is great --- the proximity of Central Park, the Natural History Museum, and the beautiful expanse of the Hudson River make it an ideal walking neighborhood.... and perfect for a food tour. The tour showed me that that these city blocks are an enclave of delicacies waiting to be discovered. Nicole, our guide, was very well informed and even provided a history of the neighborhood and the development of culture in the area. She was fun and upbeat, encouraged participation from the group, and provided in depth knowledge of the fine products we were sampling....amazing cookies, exciting wines, and decadent chocolate!

Very poor tour. Not worth money at all

1. First stop was nice snack but not enough for whole group to taste two pieces. of the quiche she had made. Could not hear the owner talk about her business the wine bar. 2. Had to share deserts at next stop as their was again not enough for entire group t taste the desert which was a cookie.. The leader of your tour group touches cookies because two were stuck together n one to the quests plates and gave to another person to eat. Two small cookies each BOO!!!!. 3. Tiawan food good but had to stand in littles store and be moved around like cattle not pleasing atmosphere. 4. Candy store a real bust. Stood around while salesperson mixed already that had already been made and not a thing was explain about the candy making process. 5. Fresh - this was a facial and cosmetic store it was good stuff but not a food tour place. Given a slice of bread from some bakery we did not even see and stood around again with no seating. Nothing to do with food tour other than the products were made with sugar. All in all this was a real ripe off as the 10 of use paid $45.00 each and received about $4.00 worth of food. Shame on you, this was a real bad experience. Our monies should be refunded....... LCanter

A wonderful way to spend a Saturday morning in Philly! Robert, our guide, was energetic, funny and intelligent. The tour incorporated some food history and science, and of course, a lot of tasting. Hey -- don't let the history and science part scare you away; Robert made the "cerebral" portion of the tour very interesting and accessible. First stop was Di Bruno's and the cheese section of the store. In addition to Robert, we had expert cheese monger Josh elaborate about the three very different kinds of cheeses for sampling (the cheese board was passed around multiple times). Next, we visited Naked Chocolate for sampling of white, milk and dark pastilles and truffles. The tour ended with freshly brewed and iced coffee at Joe Coffee. At both shops, the owners took time out to talk about their products and answer any questions from the group. An added bonus during the tour -- As we traveled from shop to shop, Robert pointed out points of architectural interest and provided the group with some Philadelphia history as well. Two (minor) criticisms: a gelato stop wasn't on the agenda (I thought I had seen it mentioned as part of the trip) and the end of the tour seemed a little rushed. Despite those things, the tour was excellent, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes food and /or who wants to get to know Philadelphia a little better.

We enjoyed every aspect of this tour. Our guide, Robert, was as entertaining as he was knowledgeable. It was much more than a tasting; we learned a great deal about provenance, production, and flavor of cheese, chocolate, and coffee. We will definitely take this tour again when we are in the area.

Tour guide was enthusiastic and knowledgeable! I live in the city and wanted an activity to do with my mother who lives in the suburbs. She was able to enjoy a short walking tour of the city while tasting some of Philadelphia's finest treats. I was introduced to new spots I wouldn't have tried on my own.

This was a fun and educational tour...Good stops and good "tastings" and of course our guide was fabulous! Definitely would recommend it and already have. I will be trying out the other tours offered in the future. We've already been back to one of the stops for more goodies and souvenirs for my out of town visitors. Thanks!

A fun and informative way to spend an afternoon. Rob, the guide, was enthusiastic and had a great demeanor. He was knowledgeable and helpful. He wanted everyone to have a good time, and I would say he was successful. It was a Father's Day gift to me which my wife got to enjoy as well. I highly recommend this tour.

The only thing I did not like was the last stop on the tour. The Greek holistic place stunk! I would of loved a sandwich or pizza or anything but that! I could not get rid of that taste the whole day. Matt was very full of love for his job and it shone though. I enjoyed everything he talked about and showed us. My sister and I had a ball. It was our last few hour before heading home and we had a great time. Thanks all. What other cities do you tour in? chrissy@metterfamily.com
