Excellent Tour

Had a great time. Our tour guide was very personable and very knowledgeable. Lots of food to try. Thought it was odd getting a NYC bagel at a Ukrainian restaurant. Thought it would have been better to have a pierogie instead. Small suggestion - but would highly recommend this tour.

The tour was fun. It offered several insider tips about the show and getting to meet one of the stars at her restaurant was the highlight!

A Delicious and Relaxing Tour of Upper West Side

My boyfriend and I went on the Upper West Side tour with Nicole. We made 6 stops and sampled a wide variety of great food. Our tastings included chocolates at two fancy chocolate stores, gelato, an amazing chocolate chip cookie, a sliver of pizza, and some wine and cheese. I would have missed a lot of these shops if I had been exploring on my own. The sample sizes were good. They were enough to get a good taste, but small enough to make sure you had room to eat all the other samples later. I was glad I only ate a light lunch though because I was pretty full by the end of the two and a half hour tour. The pace of the tour was also good. It wasn't rushed and we were given time to look around the stores after the samplings. Nicole was very friendly and knowledgeable and willing to offer suggestions about all sorts of things. I enjoyed when she discussed the history of the area briefly at the beginning of the tour and talked about chocolate making, but I wish there had been more of this throughout the tour. The tour wasn't quite as historical or informative as I had expected, perhaps because of the area where it took place, but it was still enjoyable. Francois, the manager of the wine store who gave us a brief presentation, was great. He was very laid back and extremely knowledgeable. It was a great opportunity to learn about wine and ask some questions. Overall, it was a fun way to spend the afternoon for someone visiting New York City. It was nice to get away from the crowds in the super-touristy areas and visit some locally owned shops. This tour has a "wandering around with friends trying lots of places" type of laid back feel so if you're looking to learn a lot about history or culture from a tour, you may want to pick a different one. Otherwise, it is a relaxing way to try some new desserts and get a general sense of the Upper West Side area.

This tour was a lot of fun. We took the cheese, chocolate and gelato tour. The guide was great, very knowledgeable and made it all fun. The food was delicious and I tried things I never would have tried on my own. I would go back anytime and highly recommend this tour.

I went on the NoLIta tour last Saturday. Truth be told, it was a rainy, dreary day, and the last thing that I wanted to do was to walk around town. But my girlfriend loves food, plus it was a good way to spend an otherwise lazy day... Our tour guide Laura was friendly and engaging when we arrived. She knew everything about the history of the neighborhood, and most importantly, about the food that we tasted at each stop (we stopped at about 6-7 places). Instead of keeping it rigid and on a tight schedule, she catered the tour around our group's tastes and interests, staying a little longer at the quiet pizza shop, or pointing out the Fresh store for the ladies. As a person who is not particularly crazy about history/sight seeing, Laura nevertheless kept the food-sampling part of the tour well-balanced with interesting bits of information about the area and the background of the shops that we visited. She even explained to us the 6 rules that define a Neopolitan pizza as we sat munching away. My girlfriend has been living in downtown Manhattan for over 3 years and even she was surprised upon discovering all the places that we stopped at along the way. It is nice that the stops are more off-the-beaten-path; I suspect many locals usually walk by them without noticing. Overall a great experience, better than I expected. Although a good experience for tourists, it could be an even better experience for local New Yorkers (who get to return to these places after the tour!).

Although our guide was very friendly and well-intentioned, this tour was a big disappointment. When I think of a food tour, I imagine: 1) visiting a lot of places, 2) discovering places I have never encountered before, and 3) eating a lot. None of these were true of this tour. We visited only three places, none of which was unusual, outstanding, or particularly unique. And, very little food was offered (unless you want to pay extra for it!). One should not go home hungry after a food tour!!! The three establishments (a candy store, a deli with some cheeses, and a coffee shop) were unremarkable. The chocolate shop had exactly what one imagines in a chocolate shop and nothing more and nothing interesting. Give me some truffles with cardamom or chocolate bark with blood orange peel. No, instead it was all vanilla buttercreams. The cheeses at the cheese shop were fine but ordinary: gouda, stilton, cheddar, and brie. And I don't drink coffee! Beyond all of this, most of the time on the tour was dedicated to 1) listening to lectures about how chocolate, cheese, and coffee are made (I can read about this on my own time) and 2) allowing us to buy stuff at the stores. What a waste! The same time at Reading terminal or DiBruno's would have been much better. As a native Philadelphian, one does not learn anything new on this tour.

I had a great time and you get a lot for the cost. Everyone in the shops were friendly and generous with samples. You even got to take home a bag of chocolate. It is both informative and fun.

We really enjoyed our recent Center City tour. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable and the places we visited were great! I would recommend it to friends who have an interest in food and finding out about how things are made, where they come from and how to best enjoy them. It's a great way to spend an afternoon walking and sampling various foods and beverages. We really loved the Naked Chocolate Cafe!

Enthusiastic, personable and friendly tour guide. Interesting stops were made and history shared. I especially liked the soup at the diner, the taste and atmosphere at the Ukranian meat shop and the compost cookie at the bakery and milk place.
