My wife and I had went to school in Philly couple years back. Since then, it appears that Philly has got a lot more nice little shops come up in the center city. this tour is a very nice introduction to the neightborhood and get a taste of the new scene. Our guide also provided very entertaining and informative introduction to the foods involved. We learn quite a few things new. And the cheese and chocolates tasted great!

Not as good as other food tours

We've been on the village food tour and one of the Chicago food tours. Both were better. The food on this tour was OK, but the tour guide was not as interesting and didn't really have many stories to tell about the neighborhood. This in my opinion is what makes a fun food tour into an excellent experience.

Wonderful experience.

Although it was cold and wet the tour was a wonderful experience. The group was small and you go to places that normally you would not even take a second glance at. The places are not the high priced tourist places you expect. Next time I go to New York I am going to try one of the other tours!

I was looking for something fun and different to do with my family when they came to visit Philadelphia. This was a great way to see a little bit of the city, and learn about and taste some really good food. I can't say enough good things about the tour and would recommend it to anyone!

This was a great time. We got a nice rundown of the history of the area. The stops included were great - a wide variety with excellent samples. I went with my friend who has lived in the city for 8 years and she loved it!

Better Than Advertized!
Fri, Oct 24, 08   11:00 AM LPohuski Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Individual
In some ways this tour was better than advertized, while still being exactly what I expected. As expected, the food was little tidbits of authenticity. The ticket price was more than fair at $40, considering that all these locations received some small portion of the ticket price for accomodating us and providing a sampling, The old Lower East Side bakeries and shops provided ethnic samplings in settings that I have only read about in richly told stories from immigrant history. On my own, I could have walked into any of these shops without having a big impression. I could have passed them by and never have known what I missed. Our lively little tour guide, a chef, made all the difference. Her knowledge of the area's history and people unfolded with every step. She knew the back story of every shop and wove it into an expansive knowledge of the neighborhood. We went to a pickle factory (row house size) and passed another "factory" a block away. Where else in America could that occur? We had fabulous gelato and coffee brewed from freshly roasted beans. We watched coffee beans roasting in a uniquely designed glass oven and dispensing system. We sampled a bialy from the oldest bialy bakery in the America. Who knew bialys existed? The best was the Essex St. Market with the butcher, the cheese shop and the lollipop maker (green tea and honey!) The "Dark and Stormy" truffles weren't bad either. And cheeses, I thought could only be had in Europe, but it is the butcher who earned the brightest gold star. What a personality and what wonderful stories he told. He should be on Broadway.

Discover the East Village

Have been to NY several times but never made it to the East Village. Jennifer our tour guide provided us with interesting historical information and filled our bellies with lots of great eats. We especially loved the Jelly Donuts from the Donut Plant and the coffee from the Roasting Plant. I would recommend this tour for foodies like us or anyone else who enjoys food, history and experiencing a new neighborhood. Thanks

This is the first NYC food tour I've gone on and it was fabulous. Jennifer, our tour guide, was extremely enthusiastic & knowledgeable of the area, history, and food; an excellent combination in a guide. I highly recommend this tour.

One of the Highlights of our Visit To New York!

We thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Our guide was very pleasant and knowledgeable, and we had a chance to sample some very fine chocholates, the best cookies in the world, cheese that was fabulous, and organic ice cream which was very flavorful. The last stop was the wine shop where we tasted a number of tasty wines and received an excellent education about wine. It was a very enjoyable 2 1/2 hours. We would definitely do another tour with City Tours!!

Great Tour

Everyone in the group thoroughly enjoyed the tour and all of the foods that we sampled. The only reason that I give four starts is that the CityFoods tour cost $42 per person and lasted 2 hours while other similar tours with other companies give you 3 hour tours for the same amount.

Our guide was really great. We learned about how cheese, choloate and coffee was made/prepared. The samples were delicious. During the brief walks to the different places, we saw a bit of center city and our guide told us al ittle bit about the history. Overall- a really great time. Perfect for food enthusiasts who want to get to know Philadelphia a little bit more.

Do Not Waste Your Money

This tour was horrible. We learned very little about the history of the neighborhood while visiting some of the local shops. Although, some of the shops were interesting , we could not get an idea of the food because our samples were so small. Our tour guide even cut a chocolate bon bon in half. The last stop on the tour was a meat store. We listened to a butcher who liked to drop the "F" word while sweating all over our samples...disgusting!!! I do not recommend this tour.

My friend and I decided to take the City Food tour after my niece recommended it to me. We had a wonderful time. The person was very knowledge about cheese in general, all kinds of chocolates and 2 kinds of coffee. We even learned a few things on this trip. I would highly recommend this activity to anyone visiting Phildelphia. When my husband and I return next year we are going to be taking the City Food Tour again.

More walking than advertised but reasonble The cheese store part of the tour was the best part and completely met my expectation. We also bought. The candy store should refresh their chocolate and truffle display. It was unappetizingly old and dusty looking. The server should not touch the food with her hands. She should use tongs or at least wear gloves.Overall, unacceptable by hygiene standards.
