Walk in the steps of a Top Chef

Nicole, our tour guide, did a great job showing us a few different neighborhoods where the cheftestants worked and shopped while on the show. It was nice to have nibbles of food along the way. She kept us on our toes with Top Chef related questions and challenges of our own.

I went on the NoLIta tour last Saturday. Truth be told, it was a rainy, dreary day, and the last thing that I wanted to do was to walk around town. But my girlfriend loves food, plus it was a good way to spend an otherwise lazy day... Our tour guide Laura was friendly and engaging when we arrived. She knew everything about the history of the neighborhood, and most importantly, about the food that we tasted at each stop (we stopped at about 6-7 places). Instead of keeping it rigid and on a tight schedule, she catered the tour around our group's tastes and interests, staying a little longer at the quiet pizza shop, or pointing out the Fresh store for the ladies. As a person who is not particularly crazy about history/sight seeing, Laura nevertheless kept the food-sampling part of the tour well-balanced with interesting bits of information about the area and the background of the shops that we visited. She even explained to us the 6 rules that define a Neopolitan pizza as we sat munching away. My girlfriend has been living in downtown Manhattan for over 3 years and even she was surprised upon discovering all the places that we stopped at along the way. It is nice that the stops are more off-the-beaten-path; I suspect many locals usually walk by them without noticing. Overall a great experience, better than I expected. Although a good experience for tourists, it could be an even better experience for local New Yorkers (who get to return to these places after the tour!).

An item not to be missed!

After hearing from colleagues who had participated in a previous walking culinary tour of Little Italy, my wife and I suggested that the two friends who'd be travelling with us over the Easter weekend consider taking the same tour with us. We were all glad we decided to book the tour! Not only were the places we saw and the foods we sampled things we might have missed on our own, our tour guide (Jennifer) shared her extensive knowledge of the history of -as well as her perspective on- this wonderful part of New York City with a grateful group of about 10 persons. It was money well spent.

WE HAD A GREAT TIME! wE STARTED OFF WITH MY HUSBAND, MY SON (TEENAGER) AND MYSELF. My son had to leave mid way through the cheese tasting. He had a another engagement to attend. But that didn't stop what was going on, we had a great time tasting at Di Brunos. The cheese monger at Di Brunos was very generous with his time and cheese! We then went on to the TEA BAR, we tasted tea we had never tasted before. The next stop was the Candy (chocolate store) Store. We tasted lots of chocolate!

Whether you are a fan of Top Chef or not, you will love this tour! I went with my girlfriend and had Nicole as the tour guide, who was fantastic. I watched Top Chef all season, so I was in heaven! We went to lots of sites from the show, heard some really interesting anecdotes, and I got to relive all of my favorite parts of the show. We even got to have some amazing appetizers from a restaurant that Nikki from the last season opened up, which was one of my favorite parts. As for my girlfriend, she doesn't watch Top Chef but loves walking around the city, loves eating and loves picking up tips to pass along to her friends, so this was a great tour for her also. Both of us can't wait for the day we're walking by the cream pie machine people with friends and coolly recommend picking up a pack of 8 for $2. There were also some great tips on cooking at home--what tools and techniques to use to make affordable, gourmet food without too much fuss. All in all, it was a top-notch tour and I recommend it to anyone who likes to eat and likes to have fun.

of the 2 hours, 45 minutes were at one end of the food court teaching us about chocolate and cheese..while interesting, the tour was described on the internet as a food oriented tour of the lower east side...didnt get a very good understanding of the area..food stops ok but we have been on several other food tours which we have thoroughly enjoyed and this wasnt in the same league..when we brought up suggestions to the tour guide(who happened to be the owner), she was defensive and not interested in our ideas...she also was on her blackberry repeatedly during the tour..all in all, not a great experience

My husband and I had a wonderful time on the LES food tour. Our guide Nicole was thorough and enthusiastic. We loved the combination of the different shops we stopped at and enjoyed sampling all of the wonderful treats. We'd definitely take another tour again somewhere in the city. It's also worth mentioning that we have lived in the city for more than ten years, yet we still found it interesting to learn about a neighborhood that's in our back yard. This is our 3rd tour with City Foods, and they did not let us down. This is such a great way to explore a neighborhood in NYC for locals or tourists. We took our 10 year old niece on this one and she really enjoyed it, and she is a tough customer for sure! Don't hesitate this is a good time for all!
