A Delicious and Relaxing Tour of Upper West Side
Sun, Jun 14, 09   2:00 PM thatspoetic Female 20-29 Domestic Tourist(s) Unspecified
My boyfriend and I went on the Upper West Side tour with Nicole. We made 6 stops and sampled a wide variety of great food. Our tastings included chocolates at two fancy chocolate stores, gelato, an amazing chocolate chip cookie, a sliver of pizza, and some wine and cheese. I would have missed a lot of these shops if I had been exploring on my own. The sample sizes were good. They were enough to get a good taste, but small enough to make sure you had room to eat all the other samples later. I was glad I only ate a light lunch though because I was pretty full by the end of the two and a half hour tour. The pace of the tour was also good. It wasn't rushed and we were given time to look around the stores after the samplings. Nicole was very friendly and knowledgeable and willing to offer suggestions about all sorts of things. I enjoyed when she discussed the history of the area briefly at the beginning of the tour and talked about chocolate making, but I wish there had been more of this throughout the tour. The tour wasn't quite as historical or informative as I had expected, perhaps because of the area where it took place, but it was still enjoyable. Francois, the manager of the wine store who gave us a brief presentation, was great. He was very laid back and extremely knowledgeable. It was a great opportunity to learn about wine and ask some questions. Overall, it was a fun way to spend the afternoon for someone visiting New York City. It was nice to get away from the crowds in the super-touristy areas and visit some locally owned shops. This tour has a "wandering around with friends trying lots of places" type of laid back feel so if you're looking to learn a lot about history or culture from a tour, you may want to pick a different one. Otherwise, it is a relaxing way to try some new desserts and get a general sense of the Upper West Side area.

My daughter and I went on this tour and had the best time with Jennifer! She's knowledgable, fun and knew her stuff! We tasted some of the best sweets and chocolates in the city and ended with a fantastic wine tasting from the oldest "grocer" in the city. You won't regret this tour!

overpriced for what you get

I was VERY disappointed in this food tour. In fact, it shouldn't even be advertised as a food tour. It was incredibly informative, but we took the tour to sample food. We had taken a food tour through Greenwich Village and were very pleased so we decided to branch out to other tours. If you're looking for a food tour, this will not meet your expectations. The write up is misleading. We did not experience things that aren't offered to the public. The interactive challenge was identifying a variety of spices the host had in her bag. Shopping like a chef really meant spending five minutes walking through a kitchen store. I know this company is up and coming, but they need A LOT of work if they want to be competitive. The "Top Chef" theme was a great idea, but poorly carried out.

Not worth the money

My friend and I have previously taken the Chelsea Market walking tour and this tour didn't even compare. Nearly every business we visited was so small we couldn't go inside and there were only 6 of us on the tour. We weren't able to see how the food was prepared and served. The tour guide was informative but not especially engaging. Two thumbs down!!

We learned of this tour from a CNN travel article and decided that we would take a friend and fellow foodie on a tour as her wedding shower present! We were NOT disappointed!! Our tour guide Jennifer was well informed, personable and organized! She kept all 10 of us moving along within our alloted time frame, but was never pushy! We loved the fact that she also has a culinary degree, she answered all of our cooking questions.. from roasted cauliflower to how you make chocolate (YES!)! We would highly recommend this tour to anyone.. we're already planning our next food tour!! Thanks so much Jennifer and City Foods!! We had a BLAST!

A Birthday to remember

The tour was great and our tour guide Laura was amazing. She took time to answer our questions and helped us decide what to do after the tour was over. The places we went to were sensational. I had made other plans on how to celebrate my 40th birthday, but they fell through. The tour may have not been what I was planning on doing, but it was what I should have been doing. You know the Rolling Stones song "You don't always get what you want but you might just get what you need". Well that was the case with this tour. I highly recommend this tour. I will definitely be doing another food tour with this company. There are some many areas to explore.

An Enjoyable Afternoon

The tour was very enjoyable. Sampling the food (Sam's Bahn Mi were excellent and eating yucca fries for the first time was great) was not the only good thing on this tour. The sights and sounds of this section of Manhattan were very interesting, especially the diversity of cultures. We come into the city often but mainly for shows or other cultural activities, but to see other areas that also make up Manhattan gives one a sense of how great NYC is. And, of course, our guide, Laurie, was very pleasant and knowledgeable of the foods and restaurant as well as the city.

The tour guide was a professional chef that graduated from the Culinary Institute. The tour was informative and fun as well as entertaining. Tastings were great. I look forward to touring another neighborhood in the near future.

Nicole gave a very complete overview of the neighborhood and its residents over the generations. She answered our questions and seemed to have good rapport with the business owners. This simple tasting of the goods from quality small shops made it so much easier to make a return trip and purchase with confidence. The foods were of excellent quality and even the day-old doughnuts were really delicious on our road trip home.

Everything was wonderful. It was a very hot day but the guides did their best to keep us cool. A little too many sweets if there can be such a thing but they did box up cupcakes at end to take to go. Guides were very knowledgeable and helpful not just with info on this area but other areas and tours also.

The food was very good and Laura was very knowledgeable and personable. Nice mix of foods. I especially liked the last stop, Ceci Celi. We lived in Europe for three years and we're always looking for a pastry shop that knows how to make a chocolate eclair the way it's made in Europe!
