| We were unable to attend the tour because my husband came down with the horrific flu that's going around the day before our trip. We want to thank you so much for refunding our money.........it is so appreciated! We are definitely going to take the tour when we reschedule the trip. We had taken the Village tour in New York and loved it so much that we were really looking forward to this. We have recommended the NY tour to all our friends when they go to NY! I only put 'neutral' because we weren't there. | ||||||

| I cannot think of our guides name, but she was great! Our tour was Friday pm @ 2. It was last Friday, Feb 29th. She was very knowledable and very well informed. I have been in new oleans before, but this was one of the best tours we have taken. thanks Carol Christenson | ||||||

| Our quarter adventure was most enjoyable and informative. Our guide added so much to the tour; he was pleasant, entertaining and very knowledgeable. Even though we are local residents and come to the quarter quite often, we found that we learned a great deal about the origin of the local food and other interesting aspects of the city. We enjoyed everything about the tour................................................... | ||||||

Excellent History, Not Much Food

| Our tour guide was absolutely wonderful, as was the information she shared. The historical side of the tour alone was enough for me to recommend the experience. The tour group was a total of 11, so it moved quickly and was small enough to gather around the guide so all could hear. Many of the tastings were less than superb. They were not bad, but the food was not impressive. Least impressive were the pralines at Leah's Pralines, across the street from Antoine's. I was disappointed we didn't taste anything at Antoine's, but I did enjoy going through the dining rooms and meeting the Executive Chef. Visiting the Hermann House was also an unexpected treat. What we did taste: seafood gumbo, pralines, pecan brittle, crawfish etouffee, canoli, a mini muffaletta, beef brisket, and a sazerac. It's true that you should wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to stand for 3 hours almost straight. Also note that if you're planning on the tour for a late lunch, many of the tastings do not come until toward the end. | ||||||

| Our tour was what we would call "OK". We knew 7 other people on the tour and all felt the same on many points. Our ages were 45-53. 1. It was a bit long 2. We felt the eating part of the tour was a bit misrepresented. Because the tour is 3 hours long, the eating should be spaced out. The first hour and a half there was no eating. Many people had not eaten lunch as we all felt we would be eating on the tour. One place we had a sample was kind of in a courtyard not at the restaurant being represented--tray was brought to where we were standing and small cups were handed out. At this point we had been standing /walking for at least 1 hr. and 15 min.and we were ready to sit down. It also was wierd that we didn't go to the restaurant the food was from. We never saw the restauant! All eating was in the last part of the tour, it should be spaced out 3. Tour guide was just "OK". We had been to the Louisiana Cooking school event the day before and felt that was much better--more educational, food was awesome. Very entertaining. Worth every penny, Ann was wonderful. at the cooking school. We would not recommend this culinary tour for the money. | ||||||

| I have been to New Orleans yearly since 1980 and have taken almost every tour available. This tour ranks at the top of my list. Kelly, the owner of Culinary History Tours, was the guide the day I took the tour. She was great! I learned interesting things about the food and culture of New Orleans and saw things that I never saw before. The stops at the different restaurants were fun and it was nice to meet the people who worked in them. The tastings were excellent. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting New Orleans. | ||||||

| We were the only two on the tour that day, but the tour was presented as if a large group had signed up. Very personal. Our guide was a history major and a local, so even though we have been visiting the city for 15 years, we still learned new things. Very enjoyable afternoon. | ||||||

| Great tour leader - very informative and detailed, and a pleasure to be with. Most interesting information provided. I highly recommend it to visitors, and would encourage visitors to take it as soon as they arrive in New Orleans, to be better informed in using their 'tourist' time in a valuable way. | Our tour guide did not show up at first. It took a number of phone calls from the group of people scheduled to take the tour to finally get a tour guide sent and the tour started. The actual tour was a bit disappointing since although there is fairly extensive tour of Aintoine's rooms you do not get behind the scenes at any of the other restaurants - you walk in and the guide talks about the places. We didn't go in the Hermann-Grima House at all. The samples wer quite limited. | ||||||

| The tour we took on 2/8 was great. The weather was perfect and the food samples were great. While none of the restaurants seemed overly happy to see us, they were all polite. The gumbo we tried was to die for, but the canolli was gross. The history of the French Quarter was also very nice. We had a really nice 80 degree day, but I can see that it would be a bummer if it was hotter/colder/or rainy because there is a lot of outside time. I would definitely recommend the tour, but pray for good weather. | ||||||

| I booked the tour for my husband and was under the mistaken impression that we would actually get to see some of the dishes being prepared. I did like the history but our tour guide was somewhat of a "drama queen". In fact, she got into a shouting match with a man who thought she was talking about a slave exchange when she was actually talking about a coffee shop as a place for an exchange of ideas. It was fun, but I think it could have been a little better if I had known the exact places we were going to tour and the activities involved. | ||||||

Good Historical Perspective on NOLA Cuisine

| I felt that there were parts of the tour that were very interesting, and other parts that could be eliminated entirely. The tour of Antoine's was by far the most interesting from a historical standpoint. The restaurant is visually a sight to behold, and the descriptive history of all the individual rooms was extremely interesting. We were able to meet the great-great granddaughter of the founder, and enjoyed our brief conversation with her. We stopped at Petunia's, but did not go into the restaurant itself, Instead, we were served gumbo outside in the courtyard of the Hanna Grimm (?) house across the street. The gumbo was average, and the tour of the house was the same. We stopped for pralines next. Little history there, samples were even smaller. Stopped at a coffee house next. Just a rest point, no history there. A brief stop at Napoleon House was accompanied by mini-muffelattas (muffelatta sliders?). Some good insights to the sandwich there along with the restaurant itself. A stop at the New Orleans School of Cooking gave us some excellent red beans and rice, very appropirate for a Monday tour. I thought there we would get some demonstrations on cooking/techniques. but none were offered. Our next to last stop was at Tajague's. Average beef brisket, but very interesting conversations with the bartender-very colorful character, and an excellent Sazerac cocktail. Final stop was at Cafe du Monde to watch the beignet maker toss them into the fryer. No samples. Overall, the tour guide was very pleasant and knowledgable. I wish there would have been more observation of the kitchens in the process of preparing foods and more opportunity to ask the cooks/chefs about various aspects of preparation. I would recommend the tour to anyone that has an interst in the cuisine of NOLA however. Get rids of the stops for Pralines, the coffee shop, and Cafe du Monde-little substance there. | ||||||

| The tasting tour was good fun, wandering the streets and entering local restaurants. We tasted 5 savoury dishes, 2 sweets, and one drink. The portions were reasonable and actually by the end of the tour quite filling. | ||||||

You MUST Do This In New Orleans

| My wife and I took this tour in January 2008. We have been to New Orleans several times, though this was our first visit since the storm. If you love or are at least interested in food...DO THIS! (We would also recommend taking a class at The New Orleans School of Cooking on St. Louis St.!). If culture is your thing...DO THIS! If you really don't care and you just want to have a QUALITY tour...DO THIS! Actually, while on this tour (with Joe....great job....hope you get to be Rex one of these days!) we also learned that there is a bar tour and those who were with us spoke highly of that....so I guess you'd better do that, too (we will next time)! Don't waste your time with Gray Line tours and some of those other typical touristy tours and t-shirt shops. You will learn more about New Orleans...come to love New Orleans...and taste New Orleans this way............and feel like you can safely explore the sights, sounds, and tastes by yourself when the tour is over. And...oh yeah...you get to do plenty of tasting during the tour, too. DO THIS!!! | ||||||
