GO FOR IT!!!!

This tour provides a great way to see the interiors of some prominent restaurants and local eateries in the French Market. For example, you see many of the interior rooms of the landmark restaurant - Antoine's. Free samples of food/drink also provided at some stops. The history of New Orleans cuisine is discussed as the tour progresses. As a food buff, this tour proved to be a highlight of my day. My tour guide was informative and expressed a real passion for her subject.

Expected Something Much Better

My partner and I have been on the NYC food tours and found them to be the highlights of our trip (absolutely recommended if you are visiting, you will not be sorry). While planning our trip to New Orleans, we noticed they did a food tour as well, and were very excited to get a similar experience. However, the NOLA tour was not at all what we were hoping for. First of all, I totally understand that the city is still suffering greatly from the effects of the hurricane and many restaurants are not fully staffed or open. BUT, if you are going to charge people $40 a person for a food tour, you better get to taste some food (the "this place used to be on the tour" and "we used to do a tasting of the most incredible oysters you'll ever have here, but not now" doesn't work for me). I was very dissapointed that about the tasting portion of the tour and thought that my money could go to better use dining in one of the establishments and helping them get back on their feet rather than for the tour. Secondly, having taken another tour in the city (the "Historic New Orleans" cemetery tour, which was INCREDIBLE), I have to say that our tour guide for the food tour was lacking in the basic knowledge and history that you might be hoping for. We both had many questions about the buildings the restaurants were housed in, the past usages, food origins (etc) that were not answered. It was a disspointment to walk past a restaurant, fully aware that we would not be doing a tasting, and not learn anything about the place at all. Overall, I have to say that I was truly hoping for a better experience on this tour. I felt like I got ripped off, which is upsetting in a city that so badly needs people to come and spend their money (especially considering that this was the only dissapointment, if you are at all interested in NOLA you should go because the city is up and running and you will have a fabulous time). I would not go on this tour again if someone gave me to tickets for free (although I may have gone 2 years ago, or perhaps in another 2 years...but not now).

There was a lot of walking! However, I think it was worth it. You get a behind the scenes look at some of the most famous dining spots in the quarter. There were some newer restaurants included in the tour that were quite beautiful and interesting also. Some of the restaurants provide a small sample of one of their dishes or a cocktail and these were all fabulous and not always one of the obvious choices which I really liked. I have been to New Orleans many times, though my husband has not, and the tour was still interesting and provided something new for both myself and my husband.

Tour that brings the Quarter alive!

My 17 year old daughter and I loved our tour with Albert, who is an architect by trade. He brought the history of all the people of New Olreans alive as we toured each restaurant. We especially enjoyed understanding how each ethnic background contributed their own piece to the good food that we know and love. A perfect tour for both first time and long time visitors to NOLA!

A lovely combination of food, history, and walking

If you love history and architecture, enjoy food, and like a good walk, this is the tour for you. This walk is the best way to understand and appreciate the French Quarter because you get to see it, hear it as well as taste it. Restaurants are a large part of the Quarter, and I loved seeing all of them and hearing their history.. As far as I was concerned, the food and drink was lagniappe, but I'm sure out of town visitors will love sampling the different types of food, which was all excellent and of sizable quantity. (I ate lunch before- big mistake!) I highly recommend the tour!!!

Excellent tour!

Highly recommended for just about anyone, even if you're only a history buff. I had absolutely no idea that Arnaud's, Tujac's and Antoine's were so big and had so much history. I wound up stuffed after the tour and delayed dinner another three hours. I wish I had taken this tour when we arrived instead of at the end of our trip. I would have known more places to eat and seek out. The food tour guide was wonderful and recommended several places on the tour that were appropriate for my daughter and I for dinner that night and two meals the next day. The architect guide was very good and pointed out a lot of features on the restaurants that I would have never noticed on my own. The guide also gave us some good guidelines of places that the locals frequent. The knowledge of the two of them together was a good mix. This is a walking tour and we did walk but the pace wasn't too fast nor too slow. I would say that it's appropriate for older kids past ten, especially those kids who are just entering the cooking realm. The tour does include a mixed beverage at Tujac's and the bartender was more than happy to provide anything non-alcoholic to my underage daughter. I would absolutely do this tour again and recommend it to anyone wanting a "taste" of New Orleans!

Kelly, our guide, was knowledgeable and provided looks into the dining rooms and a kitchen of well-known NO restaurants. She had a good understanding of the cuisine as well as the history and current status of the culinary scene. Her friendly demeanor made it feel as though we spent two hours with a friend, not a tour guide. Kelly has eaten at many of the places we passed on our walk and enthusiastically shared her dining experiences.

Am a Chef by passion and training. New Orleans was/is my birthplace, but I grew up elsewhere. It was indeed great to have this tour available. Only, being a chef, I would have liked to see the kitchen at Antoine's in full swing.

New Orleans is one of the best cities in the world for Food. This tour gives you a great history of all the diverse culinary contributions that made it that way. The tour guide was very informative and friendly. The tour takes you into the kitchens and dinning rooms of some of the cities finest restaurants. It is a great way to spend an afternoon in New Orleans and work up an appitite.

Afternoon tour to prepare to go out eating.

Great afternoon tour. We participated in this fun walking tour the first day we were in New Orleans. We chose this so we would have a good idea of the finer and more interesting places in the French Quarter that we would want go to the remainder of our three days we would be in New Orleans. We found the tour guide very friendly, informative, and more than willing to spend as much time as possible to answer our questions and interests. Unfortunately, in a couple of the restaurants, because they were not open for business that early in the afternoon, he could not turn on some of the lights, which prevented us from seeing all the rooms that were in certain restaurants. Also in these situations many of the kitchen staff were not there preparing food which we had hoped would be the case. Perhaps later afternoon tours would be better for this. All the restaurant managers/owners that we met were very gracious and inviting. It was apparent that they recognized this tour as a way to showcase their restaurants and allowed us much freedom to walk around. It was very interesting to hear about the history of the establishments and learn about some of the various menus and drinks that were invented at certain restaurants. Anyone who enjoys cooking and fine dining who wants to learn about the culinary history of New Orleans would enjoy this walking tour.

Wonderful Introduction to the French Quarter
French Quarter Culinary History Tour

My husband and I enjoyed the walking tour of French Quarter restaurants so much because it provided us with a great overview of the area we've longed to visit, giving us interesting background on the blending of land, cultures, and of course the many culinary contributions. And what a remarkable outcome! Anyone visiting NO or even people living there can enjoy this historical look at a fascinating and unique area. Our guide was excellent . His ease with the historical research made his delivery casual and interesting. And of course, learning about the famous and maybe even the not as famous places to dine - at any time of the day - was just such a help. We both thought later that if we'd been given even a 1-page sheet (handout) of the restaurants we'd visited, we know more about where we'd like to go. We did have some menus and sure loved the few we went to. This walk-about shaped our entire first visit to "Nawlins". A place to love and to enjoy again.

The tour behind the scenes was great. The guide's knowledge of the history of each place and New Orleans in general was good. Wear comfortable shoes as the tour is two hours of walking on sidewalks that are not in that good of condition in some places. However, that is part of the city's charm. At this price it is a steal. I hope to return for the tasting tour one day!

My husband and I took the tour with our adult son (age 23) who is a cook. We saw the history of the city from a culinary viewpoint. We all really enjoyed the tour and found it to be very informative. Our guide was great and we got a peek the "name" restaurants - some where we were planning to eat and some we didn't have time for. It was great.

This is the second time I have taken this tour, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. My sister-in-law and her fiance from Michigan were visiting , and I thought the presentation gave them a good historical background of the French Quarter. They were particularly impressed with the Mardi Gras memorabilia. Our tour guide, Albert, was well prepared, and very interesting. I would recommend the tour to anyone who is interested our culinary heritage. In fact, I would take the tour again, especially if "tastings" are added.
