Best Tour in the Quarter - and food too!
Tue, Aug 23, 05   10:00 AM jmdovic Male 30-39 Domestic Tourist(s) Individual
For fans of fine food, cultural traditions, and colorful history, the culinary tour of New Orleans is a winner. It provides an excellent opportunity to visit the best of the Quarter restaurants and get samples of some of their signature dishes - Shrimp Arnaud at Arnaud's, mini-muffulettas and cannolis at the Napoleon House, beef brisket at Tujague's, and a generous serving of Bananas Foster at Brennans. The servings tend to be small, but all together provide a decent brunch / lunch, of outstanding variety and New Orleans flavor. Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly, and has a great rapport with the staff at restaurants, all of which welcomed us courteously, including owners, maitre 'ds, and long-standing wait staff. It was a great way to spend a morning in the Quarter, giving an inside look at legendary establishments, including kitchens and private dining rooms normally inaccessible to the public. The tour was very casual and we often ate standing up, but the point is to visit, experience and learn, not to linger. Also be aware that much of the tour is outside and it is good to be prepared for the weather. If you want to understand the difference between creole and cajun cooking, if you want a glimpse of 19th centruy cooking techniques, if you want to say you've visited the best restaurants in the quarter (and maybe even meet some culinary celebrities), don't miss this tour.

Recommend with expense

Thought this was great tour. It's only fall back is the money involved. The tour is slightly expensive, but worth the food on the tour. However, the restaurants seen on the tour are not cheap if chosen for later meals. Be prepared to pay for the great food.

No regrets; and it just may be the highlight...
French Quarter Culinary History Tour

A very facinating tour of some restaurants' hidden rooms was included; that made this tour undeniable worth the price. The historical explanation for all that makes this area so unique is truly something everyone will want to know, above and beyond the culinary aspects. This tour in the afternoon is definately a feast for the eyes and ears (as it does not include food samples). I recommend it highly!

A new view of New Orleans
French Quarter Culinary History Tour

Thank you, Kelly! What a delightful afternoon! We learned about these tours in one of the guide books. We always check out "what's new" when we come back for a visit. Kelly's knowledge and style of presentation made the tour a treat - even in the heat of late summer. We also go to different restaurants each time we visit. Now we have been introduced to others we might not have had the "courage" to try before. We appreciated the kind welcome at each restaurant, too. Don't miss this tour!!

Gem of a tour!

It was our great, good luck that our guide was a retired architect, New Orleans native, and that he posessed an encyclopedic knowledge of the restaurants and food history of the French Quarter. The tour was well organized and as we walked from place to place, our guide wove in stories and histories of the places we passed. It was wonderful to tour so many of the legendary restaurants that I had only read about. The samples of the foods were generous and we were welcomed into each restaurant. Each sample was unique to the place and very, very good. I am planning another trip next spring and will book this tour again so that my husband, who missed this trip, can be included.

Fun, informative, and delicious

Took the tour on 7/28/05, and had a great time. My boyfriend and I were the only ones on the tour, so we got to ask a lot of questions of the guide, who was a history major. I'd recommend the tour for the historical aspects alone, but the food was delicious. Generous tasting portions (especially the bananas foster) and a good variety. I highly recommend it.

The French Quarter Culinary tour was wonderful. My wife and I truly enjoyed it. New Orleans is rich with history and this tour highlights that history in the context of food. If you love to cook and/or eat and are interested in learning more about the significant role that food plays in the history of the French Quarter then this tour is for you.

I have already told someone else about the tour.

We were only able to participate in 2 of the resturants, while going into the second resturant, my mother tripped over a wheelchair someone left next to a table. She fell and cut her head open, she is 78 years old and on a blood thinner. We had to take mom to the ER, while there I was telling someone how mom fell and she said that the tour sounded like fun, I told her that from what I had seen it promised to be lots of fun and good tastes, I gave her Kelly's information and I hope that she calls. Kelly and Toby (the man at the resturant) were both great. While we had to cut our tour short, there is always next year, we own a time share in NO and will be back next year and are looking forward to being able to take the tour again. Kelly was ver energetic about the history of New Orleans and she knows a lot about New Orleans and it's history.

Great tour for new and returning visitors

Our group consisted of myself and a friend with our teenage (18 year old) children (1 male / 1 female), and we all had a great time. I was surprised at how much the kids enjoyed the tour. It was a great introduction to the French Quarter and its cuisine for the them, and was in depth enough for the Moms who had visited New Orleans numerous times. Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. I plan to take the tour again the next time I visit the city with my husband.

What's behind the great eating in New Orleans
French Quarter Culinary History Tour

The highlight of this tour is to hear the history of some of New Orleans most famous eating establishments and then to actually walk through several of them without the presence of customers. It's a unique "behind the scenes" tour of the finest culinary treats of New Orleans.

Extremely Bad Tour!
Mon, Jul 18, 05   10:00 AM pdmccraw Female 30-39 Domestic Tourist(s) Group of Friends
Please do not waste $45 a person on this tasting tour. You have to stand outside in the elements while being told about the history of the resturants. It was 95 degrees and extremely humid the day we went. We had the opportunity to go inside some but briefly and we only got 3 very small tastes. The tastes were so small it was rediculous! The length of the tour was almost 3 hours as advertised. What she doesn't tell you is that regardless of the weather you will be outside and the word taste means less than a normal sample size. I felt like the red headed step child begging at the back door.

A great French Quarter experience!

We truly enjoyed our tour with Kelly. She was pleasant and knowledgeable about the history, cuisine and restaurants of the French Quarter. We got to see and learn more about the area than we would have otherwise, and the samples were great! I would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in cooking, culinary history, or just tasting new foods.

Interesting and easy
Thu, Jul 14, 05   10:00 AM hfrilot Female 20-29 Domestic Tourist(s) Group of Friends
A friend of mine and I took this tour while our husbands were otherwise occupied. It was fantastic. Kelly was informative and relaxed and our group was small, which was nice. It was very cool to see all the different rooms of a restaurant, which doesn't usually happen when you go to eat there. Also, she elaborated on the culinary history of N.O., and described the differences between cajun and creole. All in all, a very fun way to spend a morning!
