Well Worth It

My friends and I decided to take this tour as a part of our Fall Break vacation. We enjoyed the food and the guide. Taking the tour not only allowed us to taste all of the flavors of Charleston, but it also helped us to see the city. There were many places that we didn't know existed and by taking this tour we got to see lots of new streets, shopping venues, and areas of the city that I'm not sure we would have found without this tour. I would throughly recommend it to anyone who is considering it.

Informative tour

The tour guide was nice and informative. She talked about the local food and its history as well as a bit of history of the area. The walk was lesiurely and took us to various eateries & shops in the "historic" Charleston area. This is a good tour for those who are unfamiliar to "the South" and its cuisine. This was the first time I tried Grits and a few other "Southern" cuisine foods. Good tour.

Discovering Local Food

We did enjoy our tour with Sara who was very knowledgeable about the local history and food of Charleston. I would recommend that a printed listed of the establishments where we were visiting would be nice. The length of time at each was good and the tastes were very nice. Sara provided a wonderful background to each tasting. It was a history lesson on the area and food. We loved the grits which was a wonderful introduction to the tour. We did care for 2 sweet shops and would say another food could be substitued for one of these. At the Corner Kitchen the Bene wafers were tasty but left a little to be desired. We were please with all the others and did go back to the Dixie Bakery to purchase grits and also bought candy from the Belgian shop. We loved the BBQ and Collards. What a great way to end our tour with it and being on King street.

I thought it would be more restaurant oriented, but enjoyed it nonetheless. The history was very interesting and the food was delicious.

FELT LIKE WE WERE EXPECTED TO BUY PRODUCTS
Wed, Sep 3, 08   9:30 AM jembry Female 60-69 Domestic Tourist(s) Family Without Children
Much of the tasting came from shops specializing in selling products such as sauces, candy, etc. We felt like we were expected to buy from these shops rather than just sampling there wares. There were only 2 or 3 restaurants on the tour, just shops. Unless you are interested in touring shops, which you can do on your own & save money in the process, we do not recommend this tour. Tour guide was knowledgeable & friendly but dressed a little too casual to be "on the job".

This was our favorite part of Charleston

Our tourguide was wonderful ( Sarah Cothran). The food was great and the history we learned along the way was very interesting. We will do it again. It gave us a chance to sample things we wouldn't have had time to fit into the schedule otherwise.

Sarah was a wonderful guide. We enjoyed each of the places we visited. Sarah knows the history and made the tour as fun as it was delicious. What a great way to get introduced to Charleston!

We had never been to Charleston and not only did we get to sample some excellent southern cooking, we also got to see the city and get dining recommendations. It was a lot of fun and a lot of walking. It doesn't seem like it at first because of all of the stops - but definitely wear comfortable shoes. Don't eat too much before because the samples are very filling.

Was an ok tour, fun. Information was scanty most of the tasting was at the farmers market on Saturday that was available to the public at large. Leader did by some fruit and other foods that were good not necessarily low country cuisine. Our guide was interesting and had a lot of historical information. Tho since scampi has been around since the turn of the century, I doubt we actually met the wife of the creator. LOL

The tour was one of the highlights of my visit to Charleston. We scheduled the tour the second day we arrived which gave us great ideas on where to lunch and have dinner. Suggestions given were more from the view of the local people's favorites rather than the advertisements. For example, Hyman's is recommended by many advertising media as the best seafood place, but Hank's is by far the most popular with the locals. Our tour guide, Sarah was a delight. She was very informative on the history of the different cusines offered in Charleston, as well as the chefs. Another plus is that you get a feel of the layout of the city, where things are etc. Highly recommend!

We looked forward to this experience very much. It was interesting and the guide friendly. Recently the company advertising the tour was bought over and I am not sure that the new owners have completely embraced the tour. It would have been nice to learn more about the cuisine and ingredients, or even seen some actual cooking.
