Very informative

Sarah was our tour guide. My friend and I really enjoyed the tour. Sarah was very informative when it came to the history of Charleston and how it relates to various foods in the Charleston area. Even though it was really hot (usual Charleston summer) Sarah kept telling everyone to stay hydrated and walk on the shady side of the street. I would definatly recommend this tour to anyone visting the Charleston area.

All the food presented was great. It really gave you a feel for charleston. Our tour guide Cathy was very knowledgeable and truly loves Charleston. I'm really into grits now and am glad to have had the time to sample your cuisine.

I took the savor the flavors tour with my parents who were visiting me. I am currently in the Navy and stationed at NWS charleston. I thought this tour would be an excellent way to learn more about the local culture and history of the Charleston area. We arrived on Saturday at the Hunley replica and met our guide, Susan, who was waiting there for us. She gave us a brief synopsis of the tour to come and then we departed. We wandered around downtown seeing some of the historical sites that shaped Charleston and also sampling foods indiginous to the area. We stopped at the local farmers market and tried many local specialties such as mint sweet tea, fresh locally grown fruits, stone ground grits, different jams and jellies, and even freshly made candies. Susan was an excellent tour guide who was informative and flexible. She was happy to answer questions and alter plans if our group found interest in something different. Ifound the tour an exellent representation of what Charlestonians are all about. Susan also recommended the best local restaraunts which we ate at later and truned out to have some of the best food we had ever eaten. I highly recommend this tour as both someone who loves food and who has worked in and out of Culinary Arts since I was only fourteen years old. To put it simply, TAKE THIS TOUR!!!

I was very excited to take a tour which would introduce me and my mom to the local flavor of Charleston. We were very dispointed. First we only visited one local eattery, a bakery which is were we tasted just about everything listed on the brochure. The candy store and spice store were on market street - beside the open air market. Lets just say you couldn't miss either place. You did get to do some tasting, but so did anyone else walking into the store. At the end of the tour, it was thanks and bye. Now considering this was our first day in town, we had no idea how to get back to our car since the tour started and ended at different locations. The tour ended at 12:30 - it was 106 degrees with the heat index. We were told walk that way and you will get back to the start. If we had been told this when we bought the tickets we would have parked and walked up to the starting location at 9:00 in the morning when the temp was 78 and much cooler. If anyone is looking for culinary tour do not take this one.

We had never been to Charleston and not only did we get to sample some excellent southern cooking, we also got to see the city and get dining recommendations. It was a lot of fun and a lot of walking. It doesn't seem like it at first because of all of the stops - but definitely wear comfortable shoes. Don't eat too much before because the samples are very filling.

A fun tour

This was a fun tour, when we signed up we really didn't know what it was about. We thought we were going to go into restaurants and taste different foods. Mainly we just tried the foods at the open farmers market, stopped at a candy shop to taste (yummy) and stopped at a tea shop. We did get info on which restaurants to eat at and we loved our guide. I think her name was Susan. It was on Sat the 10th. She gave us some very interesting information about the history. Also it is 3 hours long which was ok.

My mother and I enjoyed our time with Susan our tour guide. The tour was a fun time all in its self, but we feel as though Susan went into greater detail with us. She made the tour enjoyable and informative. I would definitely recommend this tour to my friends and family that may be visiting the area.

Highlight of our trip to Charleston!

My husband and I loved this tour! It was on December 1, 2007, and I had hoped to meet the famous Amanda, but Sarah, our guide was knowledgeable, delightful and warm. The stops we made were ones we would never have found without her guidance (except for River Street Sweets which is a place we visit often in both Savannah and Atlanta for their great candy). The guide gave us samples of many types of food and was careful to make sure we all got to try everything. The vendors were all cooperative and charming. (We went back and purchased after the tour at every place we visited but the butcher shop.) We were on a tour with 8 people. I don't know how you could do this tour with a bigger group because when the guide walked and talked as she led us along the sidewalks, those of us in the back could not hear. Eight is the largest number that would work in my opinion. The restaurant reviews from the guide were helpful and we would not have enjoyed our trip nearly as much had we not known where to eat to get great local food. We may well have just hit tourist traps, and missed FIG and Cypress. All our purchases came from the Farmers Market and the Craft Market held the next day, so I have a lot of Charleston to enjoy now that I am home. Will definitely be back to these places and Charleston Cooks! The weather was perfect during our tour, but it was almost all outside, so I feel sorry for those who do this in rain or cold. My one admonition to those who take a walking tour is to wear very comfortable shoes, dress for the weather, and bring a tote bag to carry your parcels because you will shop along the way and carrying 5 pounds of gourmet grits is not fun! Also, it would be helpful to know how many miles this tour is because if you have difficulty walking this far, this is not the tour for you. As I mentioned, this tour was the highlight of our trip and I would enjoy doing the other tours if they are half as good as this one! Outstanding!

Fun tour-good guide...

I really enjoyed the tour and the guide was excellent. We went thru the Farmers Market and tasted/smelled many different items, mainly local to the area. (I had grits I actually liked!!) Then to a candy store for another round of tasting YUM.. then to a 'cooks' store for another tasting. It was a lot of walking which was fine for me but an older person would have had a hard time. My only complaint was that I thought we were going to "shops/or producers' to see how things were made and that wasn't really what it was,,ie.. tour not exactly as described perhaps.. But, like I said, the guide was really good and interesting and knowledgeable and it was fun. I liked the farmers market the best. I would recommend..

The yummiest way to experience Charleston history!
Sat, Jul 28, 07   9:30 AM cnuttall2 Female 20-29 Domestic Tourist(s) Individual
I highly recommend the food tour! The guide is fantastic and full of great information, both in history and cuisine. The farmer's market is a rare thing that tourists experience and is not to be missed... and you'll never experience it the right way walking through it on your own (unless you're with an experienced a local). I recommend eating a small bite beforehand... I've been on the tour twice: the first time, I was absolutely stuffed afterward, the second, I headed straight to Tristan for a meal. So grab a bite beforehand so you can savor the flavors of the peaches and jams and treats, without wanting to stuff them down because you're starving. Overall, a fantastic tour and the yummiest way to experience Charleston history!

What a wonderful way to savor the flavors of Charleston! Loved the food we sampled and quaint shops we were able to see. Enjoyed having time in each shop to make purchases to bring home. Our guide was knowledgeable about the city which made the tour fun and interesting. I highly recommend this tour!
